Guest Andy BB Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I was in a record shop lunchtime yesterday and came across the soulful house section (well, it was very exciting, and I'd just passed the Agent Provocateur window display). Of course I know naff all about Soulful House so couldn't decide what to spend my pennies on. I did hear some corking tunes in the little room at the Cardiff allnighter a couple of months ago that sparked my interest. Can anyone recommend any compilation albums as a gentle introduction to the genre? Ta very much
Guest johnm Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 a couple of weeks back soulful house was one of the style a day choices. you could search for that thread and listen to the tracks posted.

Guest Jamie Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 (edited) Anything by Joey Negro (aka Dave Lee) is a safe bet. Dimitri From Paris is as good and on the same lines. Bobby & Steve comps. on Defected are usually pretty high quality. Do a search on Amazon for them and it'll bring loads up. If you need hand choosing one let me know. Oh, and if you want some nice laid-back stuff, the Midnight Soul comps (1-3) are just the ticket. Cheers, Jamie Edited March 7, 2007 by Jamie

Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I'd recommend anything by Masters at Work or individually Lil Louie Vega or Kenny Dope, really soulful!
Barry Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I'd recommend anything by Masters at Work or individually Lil Louie Vega or Kenny Dope, really soulful! They do do a lot of dubbier/tougher work though, so I'd tread carefully.
Dave Thorley Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 They do do a lot of dubbier/tougher work though, so I'd tread carefully. But you can't go wrong with the 'Nuyorcian Soul' set. Great stuff including George Benson and the great remix of Roy Aryes
Guest Dodger Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 and the great remix of Roy Aryes Played that at the Stoke allnighter last Saturday. Most of the old Hed Kandi comps are well worth checking out as well. You can probably find them in the bargain bins now, they were chock full of quality vocal house tracks.
Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 www.deephousepage.com www.bringtheheat.com great sites of some really organized House collectives. Guest Goldwax Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 By no means an expert but seem to recall buying a lot of the Strickly Rythm label 12's a few years ago - never a bad one. Not sure if there is a CD comp but drop me a line if you track one down. Cheers, Craig

Must be having a midlife crisis mucker, last time I went to anything like a House club it was Joe Smooth and Ten City and I was getting ripped of for £200 for a piece of red cellophane by some geezers from Moss Side.
Guest Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 That's it! Where is locally by the way? Soulfully Sunny San Antonio, Texas! We've had a very strong and successful House Music movement brewing since '95. I was on the first wave and I've been bangin' out soaring Soulful tunes since then. In 2000, after a nice visit to your London and Crazy Beats Records, I brought back the more Modern Soul sound and I have been pushing the deeper side of Soul since then. The latest and greatest local hit: RON HALL & THE MUTHAFUNKAS FEAT MARC EVANS - The Way You Love Me - 7" mix. beautiful Philly style working that works well along side more classic sounds like "Movin' On" by Glenn Dorsey.. Really does bridge the gap.
Lloydee Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 There's always the live set's from the Soulful Sessions that we run in Worcester, this gives a good indication of Soulful House plus more https://www.soulstuff.co.uk/SoulfulSessions/SSMainPage.htm click this link and download to your hearts content; Special guests have included Fish, Lin Taylor, Dave Thorley, Malayka Erpen and for operners Mark Randle. Happy listening

Guest garv Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Andy Not strictly soulful house but you may want to give the MAW comp " strange games & funky things" a go, its 70`s soul remixed on one cd / lp & the original tracks on another. Cant recommened this cd/lp highly enough, check out www.discogs.com Someone mentioned the Dimetri comp, again top notch. if you would like a sample cd let me know... purely for promotional & spreading the choons ... dont cha know

Grumpyfella Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 hi i like alot of house stuff i've not bought any new tunes for a few weeks as been abit skint after being battered by the taxman but there is plenty of good stuff out there. new jersey/new york stuff like blaze kerri chandler etc. if you like stuff abit more leftfield some good stuff coming out of detroit. check pirhanahead (has a new label whatsupmusic?), dj genesis, moodyman (some of his stuff is more tracky though) but couple of tracks on his mahogani label you might like (amp dog knights - i'm doing fine, roberta sweed - runaway). he has done a mix cd but again quite track but uses some good samples. west end records seems to be putting out some good stuff too. king street also have some good cd's in the mix the vibe series. just the tip of the iceberg...... cheers phil

I think they've been taken over by Ministry of Sound now, so they've gone all 'Euphoric' i.e. Sh!te. The Stereo Sushi ones from a few years ago are worth looking at too, plus they were all un-mixed. Cheers, Jamie
Cunnie Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Always worth looking out for David Hulmes '21st century soul' compilations. Last time i saw him he was up to about volume 20 & theyr'e only about a fiver each. Pretty sure he'll be at Prestatyn so well worth tracking down.
