MAMIE GALORE - IT AIN'T NECESSARY
BORN MAMIE DAVIS IN ERWIN, MISSISSIPPI IN 1940 - DIED 2001 IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.
As a child she sang in church and by the time she was in her teens she had joined Herman Scott and the swinging Kings, performing throughout the mississippi delta. She then went on to sing with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue before joining Little Milton as a back up singer from 1962 - 1965, in the process relocating to Chicago where Milton was based at the time. The chess label was distributing Monk Higgins' group of labels (st. Lawrence, Satellite and Thomas), and mamie signed with Lawrence Records. Now going as Mamie Galore, her first record was Special Agent 34-24-38 and was one of many 'Secret Agent' records released in the mid 1960's. her third record for the label, It Ain't Necessary, was her only hit and her last for St. Lawrence. She did one more release for Higgins on Thomas records before doing one 45 for the tiny Sack label and finally signing with the much bigger Imperial Records in California. Higgins secured a production deal with Imperial and bought several of his artists to California with him. She did several records for Imperial in the late 60's (including a few duets with Dee irwin) but without a big hit she found herself without a recording contract by 1970. In 1972 she moved back to Mississippi and remained a popular performer around Jackson until her death in 2001.
