This is the full length unedited version of the film ‘British Hustle’ directed by Curtis Clark. It shows what the underground soul scene was really like back in the late 70’s.

Northern soul has received a lot of exposure in the media and press but ‘British Hustle’ is one of the few films that shows how vibrant and energetic the southern soul scene was at the height of its popularity.

It also shows the difference between what was happening in the clubs in central London and what was happening in the clubs in Essex.

The first half of the ‘British Hustle’ was filmed at the night club Clouds in Brixton and features the legendary DJ Greg Edwards, who is still one of the most popular DJ’s on the soul scene today. The late Froggy was also a DJ at the club that night but was not seen in the film.

Also featured in the film are some of the most iconic dancers on the soul scene at that time including Clive Clarke, Horace Carter, Bevis Pinks, Tommy Mack, Grant Santino, Paul Fearon, Martin Gayle, John Quinn and Danny John-Jules to name but a few.

The second half of the ‘British Hustle’ was filmed at the Goldmine night club in Canvey Island in Essex and features the popular soul DJ Chris Hill, who is not only a consummate entertainer but was also head of what was known as the Soul Mafia.

It’s clear that there was a big difference between the soul scene in Essex, which was predominately white, and where they enjoyed dancing but it was more about group participation, and the soul scene in London which was predominately black, and where it was all about the dancing and being dressed in the latest ultra-trendy fashion.

‘British Hustle’ is a film which gives the viewing audience a real taste of what the underground soul scene was really like back in the day at the height of its popularity.
