As someone who listened to black radio stations in the 60's, I don't remember Bobbie Gentry or Lulu receiving much airplay at all. As far as I can tell, the only Bobbie Gentry 45 that ever hit the Soul charts was "Ode To Billie Joe" which was all over the radio. I think Lulu might have made the Soul charts twice(?) and I'm guessing with "To Sir With Love" or with "Oh Me, Oh My...". If there were more , I stand corrected and learned something today.
Also, on the other side- The Pointer Sisters won a Grammy in 1975 for "Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" for "Fairytale". I doubt if anyone considers the Pointer Sisters Country artists.
There were lots of records you would never think would make the Soul Charts that received airplay. Legendary Chicago deejay Herb Kent had his "Dusties" show on weekends and while 95% was what you would expect. there were some surprises. These songs were also played- Tommy James and The Shondells- "Crystal Blue Persuasion", Tito Puente- "Ti Mon Bo", Martin Denny- "Quiet Village" among others. These two really surprised me - Frankie Avalon- "Venus" and Percy Faith "Theme From A Summer Place".
I guess Blue Eyed Soul is getting to be a confusing term.
