As someone who listened to black radio stations in the 60's, I don't remember Bobbie Gentry or Lulu receiving much airplay at all. As far as I can tell, the only Bobbie Gentry 45 that ever hit the Soul charts was "Ode To Billie Joe" which was all over the radio. I think Lulu might have made the Soul charts twice(?) and I'm guessing with "To Sir With Love" or with "Oh Me, Oh My...". If there were more , I stand corrected and learned something today. Also, on the other side- The Pointer Sisters won a Grammy in 1975 for "Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" for "Fairytale". I doubt if anyone considers the Pointer Sisters Country artists. There were lots of records you would never think would make the Soul Charts that received airplay. Legendary Chicago deejay Herb Kent had his "Dusties" show on weekends and while 95% was what you would expect. there were some surprises. These songs were also played- Tommy James and The Shondells- "Crystal Blue Persuasion", Tito Puente- "Ti Mon Bo", Martin Denny- "Quiet Village" among others. These two really surprised me - Frankie Avalon- "Venus" and Percy Faith "Theme From A Summer Place". I guess Blue Eyed Soul is getting to be a confusing term.

This is a Japanese Atlantic sleeve most likely from the late 50's - not sure how rare it is but, it's one that always brings a smile to my face. Everything is going well until they get to Mr. McPhatter.....

I just saw the strangest commercial on American tv- it was for legalzoom. It said"this is Frank, this is Frank's record store. Sure - Frank knows his Northern Soul but how to set up a legal limited liability company - not so much". They don't show any Northern 45's, the record playing isn't "Northern" but I think this is the first time I ever heard the words Northern Soul used in an American ad. If anyone wants to see it- its on youtube. Type in legalzoom commerical, and pick "The Story Of Frank".

Great Blue Eyed Soul from Philly with lead vocals from a young Darryl Hall. Reminds me a lot of the Ringleaders' "Baby What Has Happened ...".

Someone did "press" the 45 up about 10+ years ago with Chris Clark "Something's Wrong" on the flip side.

The group was originally known as Five Pound Grin and are believed to be from San Diego, Ca. Group members were David Doran, Malcolm McCassy, Mike Lawson, Willie Kellog, Bruce Morse and Bob Yerian.

The sleeve with The Jubilee Group would have been used for Festival. Or you could use one of these from a different Festival company. I've never seen sleeves for Jam or Northern.
