  1. I guess we can all nitpick what the first Soul comp was as opposed to an R & B comp - the earliest U.S. Motown was was Tamla Special#1 from 1961 with hits from the Miracles, Mary Wells , Barrett Strong and Singin' Sammy and Sheri.
  2. Sonny Munro, Betty Wright, The Mob ...
  3. I think you're referring to "Hold On Pearl" by Bob Kayli (aka Bob Gordy). That one is not one of the best on the Gordy label.
  4. I think anybody versus Charlene is a no brainer .
  5. Here's a few more for your consideration - 1) Donny Hathaway- "This Christmas" 2) The Intruders- "Everyday is A Holiday" (not pure Christmas, mentions about every Holiday you can think of.) 3) Supremes- "Children's Christmas Song" ( the cheesiest of them all ! )
  6. I don't know who posted the photo on you tube but I think they've got their groups mixed up. The photo looks like Kid Creole and the Cocoanuts ( another August Darnell group). Machine is made up of Jay Stovall, Lonnie Ferguson, Melvin Lee, Kevin Nance and Claire Janice Jackson Bathe (what a name!). Somehow I don't think those tall blondes are named Jay, Lonnie, Melvin or Kevin.
  7. The original U.S. 12" (which I think came out first) had the "no blacks, no jews, no gays" line. There was a later version with the "where only upper class people stay" line was inserted. The album version also contains the original lyric.
  8. The male backup singers are the Four Tops who are singing along with the Andantes. No Vandellas on the song at all !
  9. Here's a few more additions to the list : 1) Clock 2) Daisy 3) Dimension 4) Epic 5) Riverside 6) Serock 7) Spring
  10. I think you've got Mercury on the list for the wrong city. The label was started in Chicago in the 40s and I just checked an Ohio Players album from the 70s and it was still Chicago based. The parent company (Polygram) might have been based in the Big Apple, Mercury was in Chicago til at least the late 70s.
  11. That really is a nice selection. Hope everyone takes a look !
  12. A few more for the list... 1) Adanti 2) Apache 3) Concord 4) Dud Sound (what were they thinking?) 5) Nu-tone 6) Savern 7) Signett 8) Songee (?) 9) Transworld
  13. The Sandra Stephens was on Ja-Wes.
  14. Here's more- don't think they've been listed yet. 1) CHI-SOUND 2) CONTACT 3) CORTLAND 4) FLUTE 5) IMPRESSION 6) LEN-DRE 7) LOVELITES 8) MAD 9) NEW BREED ( Diane Cunningham) 10) RUSH ?? ( THE CHEERS) 11) SAPPHIRE 12) SATCH 13) SHANN 14) SOULVILLE (MAURICE JACKSON) 15) TOWER (MARLYNNS) 16) WITCH 17) V.I.J.
  15. Gamma was Jo Armstead's label and was based in Chicago.
  16. If you're deleting Gospel labels, I think Divinity should go. I've never seen anything other than Gospel on this label.
  17. Here's five more .... 1) HPC 2) K.O. 3) MESSAGE ( Gospel label) 4) MAUREEN 5) PRINCE ADAMS
  18. Here's a few more additions in alpahabetical order.... 1) Fenton 2) Gold (the Cortez Young label not one with Brooks O'dell) 3) I.P.G. 4) Penny 5) Twirl- early releases (Johnny and the Hurricanes, Bobbie Smith) show Detroit on the label. 6) Wee-3 7) Workshop Jazz 8) Zelman Here's a few you might want to delete-1) Prophonics (label says Mt. Morris which is about 75 miles away) 2) Whitfield ( didn't get up and running until 1976/77) 3) Dee Gee- I would swear this was based in Los Angeles.
  19. Sorry Chalky- Here's four more ... 1) Dotty's 2) Ruby 3) Miracle 4) Melody
  20. Here's two more that won't be confused with aftershave... 1) BONNIE 2) PUFF
  21. I don't think these have been listed yet 1) Northern 2) Fee 3) KE KE 4) POO PAN 5) MAS-TOK 6) BRUTE
  22. I'm not sure what record you're talking about- the LPTs name shows up on many LaBeat 45s. But... if you're talking about "Long Cool Summer", the lead vocalist is Jerome Thomas.
  23. Bob- There is no connection. LPTs= Labeat Production Team.
  24. I think Val "ghosted" most of the vocals on the "Easy" album.
  25. I don't think this ever came out on Scepter or if it did as a reissue. I've got mine on the short lived Scepter subsidiary Disco Gold (#27001) with a short 2:36 instrumental version on one side and a long version (4:13) on the other side. The original version came out on Roadshow.
