  2. The service booklet from a memorial service for Edwin Starr held at Manchester Cathedral shortly after he passed away. His son came over from the States and it was a wonderful emotional and uplifting service. It felt right that he should have been specifically recognised in Manchester given his contribution to the Northern scene. Paul
  3. Is it just me or does that sax on the current Sharleen Spitari - 'All the times i've cried' tune sound suspiciously like Mr Terry? Hey I know it's pop but that sax couldda been lifted straight from 60's Detroit! Paul
  4. Will dig it out tonight and scan for ya! Never mind the format what a sound - always thought this one from Ric Tic woke Berry Gordy up to the threat on his doorstep! Paul
  5. Sat in a backstreet pub in Scarborough about 2 years ago on a dull Sunday afternoon (you know the one -the Sunday when everybody looks like they're regrettin' the excesses of Saturday night!) Anyway El Jukebox decides to lob out it's random play................................Whoa Williams & Watson Too Late!!! Move them chairs quick - woke the place up a bit & the locals found a new dance style to practice!!! Paul

  10. Hey I'm drawin' the line at Mods' involvement in any vehicle sharing scheme - I actually fancy gettin' there not mendin' a bloody scooter all night half way to a do! Paul
  11. Yup,thought the scene was going downhill but this is just the shot in the arm it needs. Next Weekender I go to I damn well expect a bread cutting competition never mind that old hat dancin' comp stuff!!!!! Paul
  12. Flipside of the Soulhawk release is an ace slab of Detroit Soul 'If I Only knew' Not a dear sound but worth having. Runout groove states DMX Mastering - Detroit's first! Think this was as late as 1971 - a final gasp at keeping the 60's sound going? Paul
  13. There never has been a proper pricing system in Northern Soul. How many stories have we heard about tunes being found in relative quantity and then being dripped out to maintain an artificially high price to fund the cost of this/the next trip to the States. So it's rollox to start going on about individual prices when the scene has been rigged for a long, long time. Power to any buyers elbow. It's the rush when it hits the deck that counts not what it's worth/what you paid for it. Paul
  14. Now I know you've got MS wrong -Yorkshiremen don't ask or aks anyone out on a date in case it costs 'em !!! Paul
  15. Good question. Have always wondered about the lack of info on MS until something that happened recently. Got a Cd with standard oldies on it, but tucked away on this CD is a different unreleased take of GATS.When listening to the lyrics I noticed that at the point on the released version where he sings 'I'm gonna ask her out on a date' , he sings 'I'm gonna aks her out on a date' on the unreleased take. I'm led to believe that the aks pronunciation is typically Jamaican and I wonder whether Moses operated out of Jamaica into the States which may explain the limited info on him. Paul
  16. Thumb A Ride - one of the few instrumentals that does what is says on the can. No lyrics required - the whole thing is about the disappointment and euphoria associated with thumbin' lifts and yes that sax is the moment some kind soul stops f ya. Sublime Paul
  17. What I was saying Benji was I only know it titled as 'Who Am I' yet the guy(assuming it's a guy) has it listed as Who Am I,You Oughta Know. If he has the slightly different title it could indicate something we don't know about. Anyway think i will email him to put my mind at rest. Paul
  18. Interesting listing you'd need time to trawl through it.One that caught my eye was Dena Barnes - Who Am I,You Oughta Know. Never heard of it titled like that, but does follow the lyrics could it be a test pressing etc???? Paul

  21. What a top bloke! Back in about '74 me and my brother wagged school on a Monday as I recall and set off for Max's. Got there and it was shut!!! Asked the butcher nearby what the score was and he said he didn't open on a Monday but he'd see if he could get in touch with him.Sure enough Max came in to open up for us 'niusances from Manchester!' Had a real learning experience afternoon with loads of new tunes fired in our ears.Max really appreciated our meagre budget and added loads of ace cheapies to make our trip worthwhile. Funny upshot of it all was - got back home and tanned the record player to death.Anyway, the old man came in from work and had found out (god knows how) that we'd wagged school. It was a mortal offence and oh yes he knew what had caused it - 'that bloody soul music' and was he gonna get it out of our heads once and for all yes sirreeee!!! Being Irish he went for the basic approach - legged it upstairs to our bedroom swept up the nearest records to the deck (you've guessed it - we'd only just begun tannin' em) and decided to grill em! yup grill em (not the verbal variety) Well 35 years later it's still in our bloody heads - we've managed to recollect all the charcoaled tunes -the old man finally had to admit we woz hooked and yes very fond memories of that day. Thanks Max Take Care Tom 'n Our Kid
  22. Yeah I've heard Kentucky wasn't much kop for unearthing tunes!!
  23. Don't reckon John Manship should consider them overpriced, or are we saying the prices he gets don't relate to the actual market? Discuss Paul
