Just won a record on Ebay.
Record - $4.25, postage - $14.75, VAT - $3.80 = Total $22.80.
The VAT addition is shown on some items but not on others. It wasn't showing on this one. No big deal but I did wonder if it would escape as VAT wasn't mentioned.

I remember it being out in 1959. Was it really recorded as early as 1958???
I just looked it up. It was recorded on March 6, 1959, and not released until late April. What a weird memory I have! Half the time I can't remember my own name, how to walk or talk, and yet I can remember when songs came out over 60 years ago. I remember loving "There Goes My Baby" BECAUSE of the sweet strings, and that most of the R&B music on the radio in 1958 had gone WAYYY-YYYY downhill from its height in 1953-54, each year. '58 was the WORST! -until FUNK started bumping all the sweet Soul (except Motown) off the radio in 1966. The new Drifters' style was a breath of fresh air, and started the transition of "R&B" to "Soul".
You're right Rob - please excuse the pre-festive brain fade!

It depends if you class "The Drifters" - There Goes My Baby, as Soul. That was 1958.

The above is from Mick Patrick's booklet to the excellent Ace CD The Bert Berns Story Vol 2, which explains the similarities between Mojo Mama and 25 Miles. Berns and Wexler wrote Mojo Mama aka 32 Miles Out Of Waycross then Edwin Starr wrote 25 Miles which, by coincidence sounds similar, so Berns and Wexler got writer credits, and a cut of royalties.
Interesting. The Quinvy single credits "Varner/Crump" as writers. The "Outta Sight" recent(ish) reissue credits "Wexler/Burns"!!

Hi,
Thanks for that, I've never heard the Wilson Pickett before.
Are you sure the record you heard wasn't Don Varner? That was getting some plays a few years back. From the credits it looks like DV was co-writer.

I still use my NAD 3020e. I bought this new in the late 80's. Still works well and loud enough to be offensive in a domestic setting!!
It has the mono button, treble, bass and balance control. Battleship construction.
Plenty for sale on eBay

I would have thought about £125 for a nice copy. Great record but somehow doesn't seem to be reflected in the price on a UK one. Page 2 for the first UK demo's. I have seen them hang about when advertised at about £80ish

Never quite figured out why Greg Carmichael had it issued on New Moon. He was an intelligent guy who sought opportunities.
I remember dealing with him in early 1980 licensing Dance Freak- Chain Reaction for my Destiny label.Could it have been to give it more "credibility", perhaps masking the Tailor Made element? Or would that not have been on his Radar.
The Right On label says "recorded at New Moon Studio"

The single came about after Dave Godin suggested to his Right On counterpart Bill Downs(Ad Libs manager) that a Northern style 45 might make for an interesting release.
Greg Carmichael was hired to create such a track. He enlisted the services of his friend Patrick Adams, who was somewhat familiar with the sound and feel requested, having worked on The Carlettes in late 67 for Bobby Robinson and then the Exciters for Herb Rooney and Ian Levine.
Bill was a friend of mine and I remember being in his office surrounded by tons of Right On and Puzzles 45’s. His label manager at the time committed suicide(drug related I believe) a few weeks after I last saw him in late 75/76. He was British and name eludes me.
As for the make up of the group, I’m not sure it was the same exact lineup as the Fatback, one, but they were assembled by Greg. One of the best tailor made styles ever in my opinion
Thanks for the background info - I never knew, and would never have guessed, it was a "Tailor Made"!!
One of my favorite records.
So, the New Moon and Right On versions are both original? (the New Moon issue looks the best!!!)
Cheers

Hi,
I can't seem to open the picture with the prices. Any chance you could list them again.
Thanks

Well done Kev, you put a lot of time and effort in and it was worth it.

Add in Nabay - Believe it or not.
This was a big one for Pep and would probably have still been covered up as "The Detroit Sound"

You could also add this one! It might be tough going listening to a full set!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Anthony, welcome to Soul Source,
A number of us from Wolverhampton regularly attended the Locarno on Sunday's. However, it was usually after an All-nighter and so memories are a little hazy!
Out on interest, here's a brief review Karen Jones did which was printed in the Northern Noise magazine number 3. I think I had it as a freebie at the Wigan Oldies 4th Anniversary. The "Broken Heart Attack" record is by the Sweet (not the UK glam band!) and the "These Windows...." record is by Village Sounds. Joe Matthews was Cecil Washington.
I do remember a number of us lining up some chairs and pretending to row our canoe when Sammy Davis Jr -" You Can Count On Me" was played! It's the vocal to the Hawaii 5 0 theme.
I look forward to hearing from people with better memories or who were less frazzled from the night before.

I have a dog-rough copy of the demo of this format. It has the same markings as yours. So, I think they are proper copies. Also, I usually prefer Vinyl to Styrene. I've seen the green (styrene?) one on the JM auction which he said is the first issue/original. I'm not sure of the time gap between the green and yellow.

Maybe the bidder didn't realise how Tim's auction works and submitted one giant "hail mary" bid. Whatever you bid is the amount you'll pay. Not like eBay or say JM auction which takes you just one increment above the second highest bidder.
So, the second highest bidder on this could have been £1,800.
Just a thought and I maybe way off. If I was spending that sort of cash I'd take a bit of time to understand the system.

Always wondered why you never see, ' get out of my heart', on an issue. I know it's common and I assumed did quite well in the us, and it got a UK release. Always seen the yellow promo, never a blue issue. Can't find one on discogs.
Hi,
That post made me realise that I'd never seen a blue one. Just checked my copy. It's yellow, same as the Demo's but it's an issue! I looked on popsike and they are all yellow, issues and demo's.
Similar thing with Bernie Williams and Lou Ragland (i.e. Amy Mala Bell)
Thanks for initial post.
Cheers

My Canon Inkjet printer gave up recently leaving me with a supply of ink.
There are:
- 3 x Black 526
- 1 x Black 525
- 1 x Magenta 526
- 1 x Yellow 526
All are unused and sealed genuine Cannon parts.
Let me know if you're interested. I think these average about £12 to £14 each - How about less than 1/2 price - £5 each.
Ebay - 2021 uk vat
in Look At Your Box

Hi, It was interesting that the VAT wasn't shown on either .co.uk or .com.
I've had lot's of enjoyment from buying cheap records on eBay over the years. However, with VAT on the item value and postage, I don't think I'll bother.
As mentioned above, it's OK if you get an expensive record, say £500 for £250. The postage and VAT still mean it's decent value. In the past, I've taken the potential VAT and post office handling charge into account when dealing with a seller I haven't bought from in the past. Now it's certain to be added, ALL my bids will be 20% lower.
