  1. The happy ones (hopefully!) will be the lucky folks at our Syl Johnson show tonite, as well as Syl destroying the stage they'll be getting to hear the Lee Jennings back-to-back with the Little Roger Hatcher, funnily both are kinda mis-presses as the LRH is the one that was found on a Ten High label instead of Dotty's / Del Nita Northern, the strange old world of Northern Soul eh.

    Hi,

Does that mean one of your DJ's bought the 45!!

If so, hope you can tell us WHO and if they have any more info?

As I mentioned at the start, there were a few people bidding at the higher end.

    Cheers

    Hello All,

I saw this pop up on ebay, thought it sounded good and might bid. On Dottys label, apparently a mispress.

NO CHANCE- it went for $1251 with a few bidders at around that level.

    Any info on this?

Is it one I should know about but slipped by while I had a 25 year snooze away from the scene!

I'd be interested to know more.

    Cheers

  3. I'm afraid mine involves myself but a couple of years ago we were discussing Melvin Davis - Find A Quiet Place - Wheel City and I said that I used to have a copy at the time it was being played, and it appeared that not that many people believed me for some reason, besides, I obviously couldn't prove it and I began to doubt it myself. Next thing I know, Ted Massey puts up a scan of the B side of his copy and written on the label it says "Pete Smith (month) 1978" in my handwriting. I was and am still astonished to see this over 30 years after having written it, that copy could have gone anywhere in the world and it's actually 15 miles away!

Pete, I have evidence from 1978 that you have previous form in this matter.

Exhibit 1. Please see lower part of scan - includes address!

  4. chubby checker was mohamed ali s cousin, used to look after cassius when he was younger on the streets, how fekin hard was chubby maybe"you just dont know"wink.gif regards doog

Chubby Checker - real name Earnest Evans.

The name Chubby Checker was supposed to be a play on the name of Fats Domino.

His Wife Catharina was a former Miss World from Holland. 1962

    Go Chubby!!

Yes, I know that this sort of stuff is frowned on these day's, but it did work way back then in a big stinky old venue with carpets made out of chewing gum!

(P.S. - how the hell do you add youtube clips - didn't seem to work here)

This is a real longshot but as I was having a coffee at Stanstead in the departure lounge, a track came on that had the lyrics (I think) 'Too late to say I'm sorry.' It was mid tempo with a male vocal and although sounded 60's, I suspect that it may be recent. Any thoughts?

    Thanks, Steve.

    Timbaland (feat. One Republic) Appologize.

ANy chance it could be this?

  9. was considering selling my atlantic 584 series (nrly all complete!!!) for £2k...

logged on to JMs auction site and saw Vala Reegan currently at £608!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh my god,,,not only have i changed my mind but also cant believe some one would pay this ,,,vala and art freeman were one of the easier ones to get when i started to collect the label,,,there are some real obscure releases on the label....

theres only the Vamp Green Pea 45 and the 2 led zeps that i dont want anyway plus the wilson pickett 45 neeed for the complete run....

it was great collecting this label and theres some brill psychadelic stuff on the latter releases....

Finished at £822. Now that's a real result for someone!.

Expect to see a few "Buy-It-Now" sales for £??? shortly

  10. Hi

I'm new to the site but not to the scene having been around on and off for 35 years. The reason for the post is to see whether anyone can help to identify my copy of Kim Weston's 'Helpless'.

I bought it in a record store in San Francisco in 1992. Finding it was one the highlights of the holiday!

I think I paid $15 for it at the time which in those days was about £8. It was only recently when I compared it to the details in JM's price guide that I realised that it isn't the Gordy demo that I thought it was.

Firstly, the matrix number is G-70 not Gordy 7050. Secondly, the B side is 'Take Me In Your Arms', not 'A Love Like Yours' and thirdly, does the description 'Audition Copy' rather than 'Radio Station Copy 'or 'Demonstration Copy' mean anything?

Did I buy a 'dud' or a rare / unusual copy all those years ago?

BTW, the deadwax has '175320' scratched into it if that helps.

    Replies appreciated!

Not an expert on this but check this link from Popsike. The seller is very knowledgeable, well known record dealer and a member of SS. He currently promotes the Burnley alnighter.

  11. Hi Dave. How many Exit's wdj's turned up.? A box of 50 or 200?.The Carole Waller wdj boot has foggy print.I'm guessing the original may have clear, defined print?.

Got this VERY cheap from ebay last year. Nashville Matrix. Was never sure about what shade of green/yellow etc were proper 1st issues so felt safe buying the WDJ!

  12. Thanks for posting the Pat P article. "Do It" was and still is one of my all time favorite's from the WC days. A previous article I found interesting was this: -

    https://www.spectropo...drill/index.htm

It gives a good insight into her experience's of the Music Business - bit sad! - and her encounter with Simon S and Shalimar. Ian D has mentioned the Shalimar connection. Again, an interesting version of events from her side.

    All the best

  13. Hi,

Don't want to interfere but...I think the scans of this album are on JM's Rarest of the Rare section.

    https://www.raresoulm...of-the-rare/L/1

I seem to remember this item on the JM auction (4 or 5 years ago?). ALso remember another member on here (not Johnny F!) paying about £1k for the Black label Brunswick one pictured above. This was also on th JM auction about a year (?) after the Bell one. So if anyone is after the album, the price to me seems in line with previous auctions.

No offence intended to any of the poster's on here. Just hope that a 3rd party, independent comment might help.

    All the best.

  14. Would be great if I could get some scans of these :

Fascinations - Girls are out to get you - Stateside/Sue

Sharpees - Tired of being lonely - Stateside/President

    Johnny Wyatt - This thing called love - President/President (3 spoke/solid centres)

    Doris Troy - I'll do anything - Cameo Parkway/Toast

    C & I Foxx - Tightrope - Stateside/Pye Int.

Any Stateside Motown/UK Tamla Motown from the 300 - 500 series that go re-released in the 700 - 800 series, thinking of Contours, Marvelettes, Velvelettes, J Ruffin, Isley Brothers, Marv Johnson, Vandellas, etc, etc.

In fact anything that was 1st released 64-67 then re-released around 69/70, thanks in advance.:D

    Hello All,

I've had this Sandra Phillips Demo for a while. I've seen a couple of issues for sale with a completely different layout (crediting a "JUGGY" production and "Div.of Sue Records"). I'm sure I've also seen an un-lined white demo, similar layout to the issue.

This was bought from a very reliable dealer.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers
