Let Me Love Yuh / I'm In Debt To You

    Group 5 : GFR 101 DJ (45s)

Arguably the finest double-sider ever to emerge from Memphis during the 70s.

"Let Me Love Yuh" stands today as a timeless Northern Soul classic, to the level of receiving "sing a long" praise from the dancers as those addictive lyrics ring out from this tightly infused outfit...

Today like many others, I much prefer the flipside. A testimony to the writer A. G. Robertson to be able to write not one but two fantastic top-drawer dancers with such compelling lyrics, which Stax producer Tom Nixon knits into two dancefloor enslaving productions of the sheer quality..

If you click the double sound-file...I know, no more wordy ramblings are required from me to draw you towards the bid button..

    Condition Report

This a-side has flawless vinyl, so close to a Manship Mint -. The reason it didn't get listed under that exclusive banner is the flipside vinyl reveals very mild turntable-mat rub, NOT affecting play. Both lsabeks as you can see are perfection.

    Gene Woodbury - Ever Again / That's Not Half Bad - Del-Val 1005

    Gene Woodbury

Ever Again / That's Not Half Bad

    Del-Val : 1005 (45s)

    MINT!

The most perfect copy I've ever witnessed this century of this most divisive of Northern Soul 45's, everybody adores the song so much; it triggers ritual dancefloor hand-claps when ever it's played; claps timed to perfection, it's a lump in the throat experience watching or participating in Northern Soul unity that this "Ever Again".

Divisive ? Only because the scene is split trying to decide which version is better, which version is the one to own. Bernie Williams on Bell or Gene Woodbury on Del-Val.

Ever since Colin Curtis circa 1973, first played this irresistible song by Bernie Williams, the chase was on to own a copy. But the extreme rarity, validated throughout the years pushed the Bernie Williams demand and value to the outer limits of most collector's budgets. What a relief when, in the late 70s another version surfaced in small quantities. On it's "mother" label Joe Stevenson's local Del-Val, the label that licensed the Bernie Williams to Bell in the first place..

So the debate begins and seems to be a 50% 50% split on which version is the best, which one is the best to own?

My opinion is Bernie Williams is infinitely rarer the Gene Woodbury but is a styrene press, Gene Woodbury was scarce but is now much rarer as nobody seems to want to sell a copy they may own.

The scenario at the moment is Gene Woodbury's value has rocketed 5 fold in recent times, with no sign of it slowing down. Bernie Williams value currently simmering over £4k, it is still beyond most collectors budgets. If your a NS DJ "Ever Again" is a crucial 45 to own.

Here is Gene Woodbury which 50% of the scene think is the best version, pressed in vinyl in te most perfect condition you could dream of owning..

Investment condition and I have a feeling the values between "Bernie" and "Gene" will one day maybe nearly reflect each other..

    Condition Report

Not a Manship Mint, as I can't image it's never been played before it landed on my desk - but it is the most perfect copy you will ever see.

Brenda Holloway - Don't Turn Your Back On Me / blank - Motown CRMN 1030 NH1

    Brenda Holloway

Don't Turn Your Back On Me / blank:

Motown acetate: CRMN 1030 NH1 (LPs)

Prepare yourself for goose-pimples, shivers down your spine, This is MOTOWN at it's most inspiring!

You're about to be blown away by a 19 year hopeful from California, here is Brenda Holloway at her spectacular best, giving up breathtaking Motown Northern Soul with a dose orgasmic girl group assistance.

"Don't Turn Your Back On Me" was of course never issued - just this 1965 studio cut, Motown acetate cut CRMN 1030 NH1

First recorded Tuesday 27th. finish off Thursday 29th. April 1965.. it is a Motown masterpiece they took two days, to get to finally cutting this 10". But the committee were not satisfied.. (see label notes below) written on the label, most likely at the weekly board review of new product.. which they rejected, you may find that amazing, I certainly do, as for me this is one of the greatest Motown girl recordings ever!

But we have to remember this session was just over a month after Motown gave "Brenda" Mary Wells's "When I'm Gone" to record and it was now doing well on the charts. Mary leaving for unfulfilled promises of even greater stardom, left a big hole in Motown's sales and a place to fill in girl roster. Brenda's next record needed to sound more like their former moneymaker, Mary Wells. So the release decision was to go with "Operator" ...which was very Wells-esque.

Leaving this pure-treasure to sit in the vaults...

    Condition Report

10" acetate clean playing surface that gives up the clarity you'd expect from a direct-cut. Some light surface blemishes none of which affect play. This is a studio acetate that somehow escaped the glaring instruction to "recoat" the surface. 10" acetates in 1965 were no cheap and the most economical solution was recoat the acetate after it had served it's review process. The label beside the 3 recoat demands, is littered with aranger notes e.g. "less echo on lead voice" "remaster needed" I know of no remaster ever recorded, and to my untrained ear it sounds utterly FANTASTIC

Charles Sheffield - It's Your Voodoo Working / Rock N Roll Train - Excello

    Charles Sheffield

It's Your Voodoo Working / Rock N Roll Train

    Excello: 2200 (45s)

In a world of the "Soul Police" quite rightly insisting Northern Soul DJ arrives for his set without a single repro/bootleg or counterfeit in his DJ box. To own an authentic record of the calibre of Charles Sheffield is crucial, if you'd like to become an accepted Northern Soul DJ, who likes to fill the "floor".

It's not snobbery, but it is one tool available to promoters to lessen the attractiveness of this ubiquitous trade of making and playing Northern Soul bootlegs and taking the DJ set of someone who has carefully accumulated his Northern Soul 45s as originals through love and passion for the music.

This copy of Charles Sheffield floor-crammer, as you can see has h2o damaged labels, but that authentic "Sheldon" stamped is sitting proud in the deadwax, and the sound is a strong, loud and clean. So the DJ may overlook the label flaws, whilst a serious OCD collector may not..

This is not a record that turns up often with clean vinyl to DJ clarity standard..checkout the purity of the double soundfile lifted directly of this disc..

Up to now, there is not a squad of "clean label" Police patrolling the Northern Soul outposts of the United Kingdon.. but there are some who dislike dancing to low-fi records bootlegged from CD's or from You tube sound clips; and there are many, many people decidedly unhappy at DJ's getting bookings and playing bootlegs... whilst collectors and DJ's with original authentic vinyl are sitting on the subs-bench.

    Read condition report carefully.

    Condition Report

Vinyl has a few mild surface marks on the FLIPSIDE vinyl, whilst the A-SIDE has only minuscule sleeve storage blemishes but a very edge of the vinyl is a small wrinkle/curl NOT affecting play or grooves. Both labels have water discolouration and a little flake, inspect both scans carefully as a non-professional repair had been administered, before it came into our possession.

    Mixed Sugar

It's A Bad Feeling / Fifteen Ain't Young No More

    F. G. S. : 423 (45s)

Even with the help of a little local distribution muscle from M.S.K. of Dearborn, Detroit. This 1974 Michigan D.I.Y. project experienced a cool sales reaction.

Perhaps the Michigan public were not ready for a superior slab of pre-disco era Crossover Northern Soul. It is vocally unusual, with the lead carrying a "Roshell Anderson" style twist in his vocal and the shrill girl-group chorus just never lets up. Then there's the peppering by insistent trumpets which brings the whole session together with a blend of Soul and Jazz that works brilliantly.

I adore the male lead voice and I've always been a sucker for eager girl choruses (these ladies scalpel the session) with piercing regularity. The trumpets are perfectly timed to elevate and that rattling percussion drives everything forward...a super dancer!

When it comes to that before Disco, after Motown time in Michigan music there have been some real gems cultivated there, this one crafted by the busy Regional Garland is a high-calibre example of local artist brilliance.

Just too good to pass by...

The trend for owning the real deal Northern Soul classics in their least seen formats, in the finest possible condition, has never been stronger. As more and more collectors join the battlefield of known worldwide as "Collecting Northern Soul"

Juanita Henson's 1963 vocal group explosion, made release over the border to Canada but sold nothing, which the absence of label scans on the worldwide web confirms.

Not only are the labels seductive, the vinyl is that wonderful RCA style, high fidelity, crystal clear sound.

If you have a penchant for owning the rarest most attractive format, this listing offers all those things and more..

    Condition Report

Two attractive labels are flawless, both sides of the vinyl are unblemished. This is as clean a copy as you're ever likely to come across. there is a light dimple in the vinyl (which we think is a master-plate characteristic) NOT affecting play, as you can hear fidelity could not be clearer.

Got To Get Better / same: instrumental

    Taste: 8401 (45s)

Catch this rare Ohio 80's indie dancer, on the up!

A little birdie told us an enthusiastic Soul Sam has recently added this to his DJ set, so anything can happen from now on in.

A short slow intro, lifts into a feelgood vocal group D.I.Y. dancer, of the highest order.
A strong jazz slanted male lead vocal is joined by a silky girl-group chorus, whist a piano sends out a dance-rhythm that builds throughout this spirited session constructing a super dance tune you would think came from a major label studio, such is the quality of the production. With an ingenious end to the session with that impressive lead vocal finishing of with a wonderful display, with a magical moment of "scat", his vocal emitting "Jazz nonsense" so exquisitely. The song elevates yet again, for one last time, as the girl group and the lead voice melt into each others space.. as the back-beat and the piano softly plays it all out..

A fantastic tune which we're sure Soul Sam will make into a big one... as he always does when he owns a disc of real quality.

    Dell-Larks

Out Of The "In" Crowd / Thud

    Jet: 101 DJ (45s)

    Unicorn Rare!

Northern Soul most prolific arranger crosses the Hudson to guide Northern Soul's most-legendary vocal-group through a colossal production showcasing a group so comfortable with themselves.

Listen to those breathtaking inter-changes, the rolling highs and lows of the alternate voices; the perfectness of their deliver. This is vocal-group Northern Soul at it's most impressive even though it takes a couple of plays for it to click in your head exactly what this unique gathering created.

Calello's penchant for the "showy" production exceeds even his exquisite skills at musical elevation he displayed on each and every Four Seasons recording it was at the helm of; this time instead of guiding blue-eyed Jersey Boys he mentors real-deal Soul Men through a record that the Four Seasons would have loved to perform, but would never have matched the richness of the opening vocal... that immediately grabs your attention.

Big full orchestra and the cooing backers lay a carpet of sound for the boys to stroll through; then the falsetto takes his turn after the baritone takes pause, the silky plea "Won't You Please Let Me In, I Wanna Be "In" I tired of being "out"... ooh Baby" is truly delicious. The zipping string, the fanfare of trumpets, thundering kettle drums "Calello" has it all going on and the "Dell-Larks" totally immerse themselves in this prodigious production...

I LOVE IT!!! I also love it's challenging ownership status of only a very few copies known to exist.

    Contours - Funny / The Stretch - Motown 1012

    Contours

    Funny / The Stretch

    Motown: 1012 (45s)

One of Motown's My love for Motown goes back to when I was a school every Youth Club and Coffee bar in the late 60's reverberated to the sounds of The Motor City. When I left school my collecting direction was focused at first on the Motown Sound before stretching my wings into other Soul sounds..

Motown was ingrained in my psyche I've purchased every single interesting piece of Motown vinyl we have ever hit upon, and for many decades we have prided ourselves in our unrivaled array of Motown collectibles, it has now been fully 50 years my passion for Motown has culminated in a huge stock of Motown and it's related productions..

In those 50 years I have never witnessed a Mint minus copy of Motown 1012 - today I've sitting here rather satisfied to be able to offer you an astonishing copy with two flawless labels and playing surfaces thast only reveal the merest of sleeve contact blemishes from decades of sitting in a cherished collection..

But this "Rarest Of The Rare" Motown is so much more than just the highly coveted #1012 "Funny" is a beautifully constructed Detroit vocal-group-harmony ballad of the highest order.

But when you flip it over, we move into seriously rare Northern Soul R&B territory. "The Stretch" is a typically determined Contours session, with those lively vocal ricocheting off each like a madman with a M2 Browning. No Motown group ever injected so much energy into there recording and still kept a seamless flow to their harmony.. "The Stretch" is one cool R&B dancer, and we doubt any Northern Soul Jock owns a flawless copy..

This listing has so much going for it. Serious Rarity, astonishing condition, beautiful harmony ballad fronting an outrageously slab of Detroit Northern Soul R&B.

    Condition Report

As above, I've never witnessed this seriously rare 45 in this high state of condition ever before! This is an investment piece.

after last weekend show and the 'interesting' takes

Can someone enlighten on to what exactly this refers to ? I guess I'm missing something that is so obvious...

A UK celebrity TV dance competition called "Strictly Come Dancing" (also called "Dancing With The Stars" in other countries) featured a bit of a "Northern Soul" effort on Saturday. Here's the clip....

(Mike and the Mods, please feel free to delete if you don't want to clutter up the poll:thumbsup:)

    Chapter Five - You Can't Mean It / - CBS 202395

    Chapter Five

You Can't Mean It / Anything You Do Is Alright

    CBS: CBS 202395 (45s)

Imagine the scene 1966 in Barrow In Furness, Cumbria. The weekend is here and the local hometown group are playing live at the town's "99" Club.

It's a must attend night for local teenage girls and boys, the night to hear their neighborhood band The Chapter Five play Soul. What a blasting night of blue-eyed Soul that would have been. Incorporating honkin' horns ( a tenor sax, a baritone sax, a trumpet ), keyboards, bass & guitar and pulsating-percussion, apparently this six man squad, knew exactly how to shake it down.

At the end of their set, the six man team sat on the edge of the stage proudly handing out copies of their new 45, a cover version of Maxine Brown's "Anything You Do Is Alright". One young lady who only lived 2 streets away from keyboard player Dave McGerty eagerly accepted Dave's gift. Which she took home that night, dropped it into the W.H. Smith family record-box and in the morning forgot all about it..

Little did the young recipient know or indeed Dave McGerty, Dave Roberts, Allan Davies, Bruce Martin, Frank Hayes, Tony Flanagan, Dave Roberts, Lou Mickleback or vocalist John Ritson, realize that the flipside that Dave McGerty had written, would over the coming decades evolve into one of the most sought-after Northern Soul British 45's of all time..."You Can't Mean It"

It wasn't until the sad passing of her mother and the records coming back to her daughter, she remembered that "Freebie" from a night out in 1966. Some time later there was a random conversation with a Northern Soul DJ from Warrington, who suggested the family may have a very special record in their possession..

Very special indeed, now universally considered a "rarest-of-the-rare" British record, that very seldom comes to market and certainly never in this spectacular condition and with the signed provenance for all to read.

Collecting Northern Soul, collecting rare British 45's, opening a registered delivery package does not get any more dramatic than this... a breathtaking experience.

    Condition Report

The owner is sure this 45 sat in the family record box unplayed sine 1966, and I believe that assertion is correct, as the center hole reveals not a trace of spindle hole penetration UNPLAYED before we lifted that glorious soundfile. Note however during its virginal lifetime the play surface as expected picked up a few sleeve storage blemishes to the vinyl. a solitary hairline and what I believe is a very mild factory inflicted scuff and it was "bagged" into its sleeve. None of these benign freckles affect play in any way, visually not "pristine" as the provenance described but visually an impressive EX++ but the grooves are MINT I can find no evidence of play before it arrived with us.<br /> <br /> So you could well be listening to the least played example of this iconic British Soul collectors item on Planet Earth. Labels are utterly immaculate, Christine thankfully resisted that young girl temptation of writing her name on everything..The sleeve is the exact same one Dave McGerty handed it down from the stage in 51 years ago. <br /> <br /> This copy is a breathtaking beauty, that will be sold with the historical provenance ,typed and signed by the owners.

Jimmy Delphs - Dancing A Hole In The world vocal & Instrumental - Carla 1904 Promo

    Jimmy Delphs

Dancing A Hole In The World / same: instrumental

    Carla: 1904 DJ (45s)

One of my favourite Detroit vocalists with by far and away his rarest 45.

Richard Searling teased the Wigan Casino crowd with this wonderful Ollie McLaughlin creation, as Richard frustrated the collectors by covering it up as "Tony Hester" "Dancin' A Hole In The World" whilst we all dug and hoped to find a copy, this original version remained one of the "Rarest Of The Rare" it seems forever. As the best Richard's rival DJ's could come up with was the Esquires version on Rocky Ridge.

It is now 40 years + since Richard's cover-up was launched it's still one of Detroit's "impossibles" sounding as good today as it ever did. Vocally slick, like all Mr. Delph's work, fantastic honkin' horns, lively guitar driven rhythm, the occasional burping from Mike Terry's Baritone Sax.

    THIS IS DETROIT!

The instrumental side really clarifies how much is going on in the background whilst the Jimmy enthusiastically delivers the "Dance" message.

Records so rich in instrumentation, chorus enhancement are now a "Lost Art" never to be repeated wealth of talent coming together to make a recording that fell through the cracks of the avalanche of 45s that were released every week in the Motor City.

This is what Northern Soul is all about finding, exposing and preserving the truly great recordings of 60s Soul..

    They ain't making it anymore..

    Condition Report

this promo has two flaw-free promo labels, just light biro II squiggle to left on the A-side. Flipside label is clean. The vinyl a-side has many light surface hairline which DO NOT affect play, listen to the double soundfile lifted directly off this disc, as yo can hear it plays Loud, Clean & true. Flipside looks a little worse with a couple of those panicky fumbled turntable retrieves that leave a fingernail trail. NOT affecting play..<br /> <br /> Overall visually vg+ plays a clean EX+.. listen to Wigan Casino circa 1977 and enjoy the lost art of Detroit Dance that started to die as Tony Hester, Ollie McLaughlin, Mike Terry passed on.. we rthink this rec ord demonstrates the sound perfectly..

Mixed Generation Enterprize - Take To The Sky / Feel So Good Inside - Blastoff 175

    Mixed Generation Enterprize

Take To The Sky / Feel So Good Inside

    Blastoff : 175 (45s)

Seriously RARE New England D.I.Y. private press Modern Soul Funk infused dancer, that very few DJ's can boast of owning. Soul Sam spin, perched and ready to fly as it's perfect for the European scene qualities seep from every note. An Earth, Wind and Fire inspired dancer crafted by two "unknowns".

Rare in the extreme and dripping with "Blastoff" potential. Intricate guitar riff make for an easy opening, then the subtle horns pout and blow. The group then take shape with soaring harmony and searing voices punctuating the song.. the long vocal note holding, is very reminiscent of an Earth Wind and Fire production, with EWF style stabbing horns, wah-wah and shrill screaming when required. This is very impressive Rare Soul Dance near 5 minutes of a compelling fusion of Soul, Funk and Jazz..which only a few DJ are able to play.

Flip it over and the "Mixed Generation Enterprize " lead you into contrasting but equally impressive Soul territory, as they deliver the Sweetest of Lowrider harmony, as an icy-cold falsetto is cradled by a silky arrangement of sexy-sax and silken harmonies. The lilting stroll of harmony propelled by the gentlest of piano tinkles and a most considerate saxophonist who enriches the background. A wealth of male vocals seamlessly fuse into one curtain of Soul.. this is Sweet Soul at it's most convincing..

Two truly Brilliant sides, one extremely RARE disc from Connecticut.

    Condition Report

Two clean labels, both sides of the vinyl have some light hairline, a mild tiny scuff here and there. But it plays an impressive loud, clean & true. Check out the two full soundfiles attached.

    Reggie Soul

My World Of Ecstasy / Mighty Good Loving

    Capri : 11712 (45s)

Forgive he pun, but this is sublime Chicago Northern Soul Crossover ecstasy.

A much loved drop at all those discerning Soul events across the country. Soul Essence, Tuff Love, Diggin' Deeper, The Orwell etc have all been elevated by tunes of this superior quality as the "Crossover" sound enriches the evening with a touch of class.

Check out those urgent girls serve up the intro, then cradle Reggie Soul's beseeching voice through his pleading offering of "Ecstasy" as if not enough has already been laid down, a flute solo joins the session...

Utterly fantastic tune, my kinda play, perfect Northern Soul Crossover drenched in seriously Soulful qualities to upgrade you set.

Hidden on the back is a slab of intense back-drop inducing Northern Soul, a careering 100 mph out of control truck of Northern Soul that if you pitch down transforms into a real-deal Northern Soul dancer you have a chance to keep up with.. Listen and make your own judgement on that.. meanwhile I'm still swooning over the A-side that is the ideal missionary to convert the uninitiated to premium Crossover!

  8. Hi Pete,

Not a disc I've ever looked for or taken much notice of. The popsike site looks like it's one of those records that doesn't come up very often but doesn't get a huge amount!

    https://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=sugar+pie+desanto+trouble&pagenum=1&incldescr=&sortord=dprice&thumbs=&endfrom=&endthru=&ipp=&sdc=&currsel=3

£50-£80 ?? But possibly more as there's greater interest in this style of tune these days. Not a bad 2 sider, I like it!

Larry Santos - You Got Me Where You Want Me Now - Evolution PROMO

    Larry Santos

You Got Me Where You Want Me Now / Tomorrow Without Love

    Evolution : 1007 (45s)

Simultaneously a Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes Pier & Yate Northern Soul Monster circa 1977.

That tri-combination of the guitar, swirling strings colliding with a snarling vocal, was the green light for a semi-final styled pitch invasion!

High up on the Cleethorpes Pier DJ podium or peering down from Wigan Casino's balcony, witnessing the euphoric migration from the hall's perimeter of the dancefloor; joining the ever swelling throng of human gyrations, was a vision still crystal clear in my mind today. One of the many memorable events the old-school Northern Soul all-nighter would present you with.

Some records emitted such a powerful torrent of instruments on the intro, you had no choice but to hurl yourself into action. "Larry Santos" intro is almost incomparable, with his insistent voice and the addition horns, crafts one compelling slab of Northern Soul. A timeless NS classic that seldom surfaces in today's market.

Here's a chance to relive those thrilling times of our youth... with a copy the most-popular of tunes.

Bobby Bennett - You Did It Again / EVOL (Love Spelled Backwards) - Junior 1009

    Bobby Bennett

You Did It Again - Junior / EVOL (Love Spelled Backwards)

    Junior: 1009 (45s)

The familiar Philadelphia trait with a "Get Out" styled rap intro lulls you into a false sense a serenity. Then genius of Bobby Martin explodes on a wave of horns delivered to match that growling Bobby Bennett vocal. As this uncompromising R&B man bursts into action.

Don't we just adore these deceptive intros, that keeps the dancefloor in gentle sway, all in accord awaiting blast-off!

Bobby does not disappoint as he attacks the lyrics, with anger as he girl once again takes him for a fool, but he can't break away as his addiction for her allows her to "wrap him round her finger". You can feel his frustration filling the room, as Bobby Martin backs him up with honkin' horns and a driving rhythm.

Fabulous Northern Soul that would have easily become just as prominent Northern Soul classic as "Get Out" if only there'd ever been enough copies to go round... This 45 has always been difficult to finds.. another top tune suffering exposure threw it's own rarity - just poise for the right DJ to give it the turntable time it so deserves.

Noting this tune is only available as the STOCK copy with the promo being same EVOL on both sides, adding to it’s frustrating rarity…but don't forget flipside is a killer R&B dancer in it's own right

Surely it's time to hold a prolonged Northern Soul renaissance for this former Harold Melvin - I Did It Again - cover-up..

Major Lance - You Don't Want Me No More / Wait Till I Get You In My Arms - Okeh 4-7284

    Major Lance

You Don't Want Me No More / Wait Till I Get You In My Arms

    Okeh: 4-7284 (45s)

A NORTHERN SOUL ANTHEM with few equals!!

Note this is the authentic FIRST Press. You may be thinking; Manship is pointing out the obvious, as we can all see the big 45 RPM on the left hand side.

The reason I say original FIRST press because some dubious fraudster has purchased the Columbia 1973 reissue with the small 45rpm text and applied FAKE large 45RPM labels. What will these crooks think of next?

But all is not lost, fortunately the diligence of Columbia, their master stampers changed the last letter of the ZSP machine stamped matrix every time they changed the stamper, usually after 20,000 presses. So if this 45 received a new stamper the martix would read ZSP1185411 3A this copy is from the very FIRST run ZSP1185411 1A with the flipside matrix ZSP1185411 2B.

Now here's the way to spot a fraudulent copy the 1973 matrix # is ZSP118541-1E with the flipside carrying ZSP118541-2F in the deadwax. We did have a fraudulent copy I bought in as collection, how many of these have been passed off as original we can only guess, but be aware if your not buying from a dealer who cares and thoroughly investigates every detail. You do need to check the matrix, even though the "fake" label has weak "purple" background that can be scratched off..

Here's the real deal correct matrix from the very first run - ZSP1185411 1A

    Condition Report

Both labels carries minimal expect wear for the OKEH label, notoriously susceptible the storage rub. Both A & B vinyl play Mint - . A-side vinyl has a solitary light surface blemish, Ex + grade. Flipside vinyl is nearer Mint minus. A fine clean copy and reassuringly 100% authentic

Al Perkins - You Cost Too Much / For My Baby - C. J.

    Al Perkins

You Cost Too Much / For My Baby

    C. J. Records: 612 (45s)

Carl Jones's new labels slowly but surely got of ground, recording local artists, covering Blues, Gospel; And of course Soul when he recorded Betty Everett, injecting a new lease of life into her career after two years without a single..
Al Perkins was one of Carl's first signing and debuted the label in 1960 with "Don't Deceive Me" which received a few releases through the years..

Note today this listing is the FIRST press of his 2nd. release for Carl Jones, jeweled with silver text and silver bars adorning a flawless glossy rich red label label background, first press and utterly pristine.

"You Cost Too Much" is a full throttle R&B/Blues shaker showcasing Al's guttural delivery, this 45 will please Northern Soul R&B DJ's and Blues collectors alike; and for those of you who's R&B thrill is an out-of-control wailing sax.. this session gives up a memorable sax break that forms a killer backdrop to Mr. Perkins compelling singing.

A record for proper-record collectors who seek out records that capture an era of musician purity, unpolluted by self-indulgent record producers.. this is Chicago R&B straight from the neighborhood; as the flipside proves with it's capacity to transport you to after-hours 1960 jam session, awaiting a Sassy-Mama to take to the stage and whip up a storm with her suggestive lyrics and saucy delivery, sequined skin tight dress that leaves you in no doubt the lady is built for comfort..

Yes, here's a record with the ability to paint a picture of Chicago, 1960 and all the great music that was born there..

    Condition Report

Flawless and that's why it's listed here, ever tried to find 57 year old Chicago R&B/Blues in flawless condition... so very challenging, most collectors settle for what ever condition they can acquire these treasures in, as long as it plays..Note vinyl is as immaculate as the label presents itself.. you will not locate a finer copy.

Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad - Island

    Jackie Edwards

I Feel So bad / I Don't Want To Be Made A Fool Of

    Island: 3006 (45s)

Forgive me if you've heard this story of youthful Soul vinyl obsession before but some events never leave your mind no matter how long ago they happened.

My brother's recent send off, was a tearful reunion of the Melton Mowbray MODS who shaped my life. In 1970 Decky Stevens introduced me to the Brit Club on the banks of the River Trent. I felt so proud to be asked to accompany the man with the best polished brogues in town. I thought I'd entered the exclusive world of MOD-acceptance, through my personality; but it was my very pretty girlfriend's preference for tight fitting hot pants that triggered the invite to ride the bus to Nottingham that night..

A night that changed the course of my life. Not because Decky's MOD persona almost stole my girl away but because my brain that eveningwas bombarded for the very first time with the recordings of Al Kent, J. J. Barnes, Major Lance, Jaybirds, Jimmy McCracklin, Rufus Lumley etc etc. I left the club determined to own all of them, especially that one full of strings that Decky couldn't tell me the artist or the title but I found out on my next visit it was Jackie Edwards - I feel so bad - it became my top want.

Ironically a few months later, I had my very first record-digging hit on Melton Mowbray Sunday market. The Kendall brothers and me stumbled upon a 45 collection being sold by "Cetti" his I.d. sticker was on every Tamla Motown, Stateside, Sue, Capitol, Columbia 45 that lay in strewn across the market stall for these 3 country bumpkins trying to amass a Soul collection it was a day to remember. ( another time I'll tell you what prizes we left behind as our feeble knowledge failed us)

My prize catch was Major Lance - Investigate - Columbia. The boastings of our find soon spread; Tim Crumb a horse-showjumping Soul boy declared he wanted my Major Lance, but I wouldn't sell. But I would maybe trade it for the super-rare (I'd been told) Jackie Edwards - I feel so bad - he said he'd got a copy..I was darn well ecstatic when we did the trade the very next day. I couldn't wait to get home and play it...

I danced around 25 Baldocks Lane like Leicester City had won the league
(another one of my dreams) I was at last the owner of Jackie Edwards.

And what a pretty label..a brilliant yellow.. a label I'd never seen before. The 'MAGIC' label and it felt like magic and I was so proud of my first record deal..

Until I soon afterwards I was told it was a worthless bootleg worth 75p...

    Condition Report

Some light surface marks, but as you can hear this moment of Jackie Edwards genius plays beatifully clean, those zipping strings in full flow, and Jackie's spellbinding vocal crystal clear. Tiny name SYD a previous protective otherwise clean iconic red and White Island faces..

    Joey Heatherton - 3 title 2 x acetates - Bell Sound

    Joey Heatherton

Baby / Til There Was You / Live & Learn

    Bell Sound: acetate (45s)

Before you today is a piece of Northern Soul history from 1966. 2 different acetates covering Joey Heatherton's New York recordings crafted by John Madara, David White & Len Barry.

On this session 24/03/1966 a stunningly beautiful lady with the scorching vocal recorded a Northern Soul classic "When You Call Me Baby", of course simultaneously a Wigan Casino & Cleethorpes Pier favourite.

On the acetate it is just known as "Baby".

Leon Huff on piano opens the proceedings, of this slightly different take than the Decca release..(listen) as she pushes the vocal higher and stronger than the Decca finalisation.

On the flip of "Baby" is the unissued "Til There Was No You". Madara, White, Barry and Huff had a penchant for remixing the "standards" to great effect. Take time to seek out and listen to Len Barry transform "Somewhere", a sadly forgotten Brit Club, Nottingham play in 1970/71.

With this two disc package, the lone acetate is again a slightly different take to the flip side Decca eventually went with.

So this listing is two Bell Sound Acetates, offering up 3 strong songs showcasing this legendary Philly team in the Bell Sound Studios New York; where they cut some killer sides before Len Barry's split to RCA to team up with Jimmy Wisner very soon afterwards.

A really cool piece of Northern Soul history, from a talented gang of music makers and one decidedly gorgeous lady.

    Patrice Holloway

Stolen Hours / Lucky, My Boy

    Capitol: 5680 (45s)

The Page Boys craft two truly magical Soul Sister double-hitters with both sides underlining the sumptuous vocal powers of this regrettably unfulfilled talent.

Here's one of the top 500 plays that has and will never wear out it's welcome. As wife's, girlfriends and husband's glide off into a world of their own; dancing whilst secretly reminiscing their own treasured "stolen hours".

Top side Mr. "In Crowd" Billy Page lays down those searing social statements on fidelity. Lyrics that are so close to "home" for some. But brother Gene Page weaves such a haunting arrangement the stigma evaporates as the need to dance takes over..This is glaring writing and producing brilliance sung by a tortured Diva. Who delivers the most telling of all , lovelorn mistresses laments.

The flip side is almost as enthralling but for this moment Patrice, Billy and Gene have drained of superlatives...

Morrocco Muzik Makers - Pig Knuckles / Back To School Again - Motown 1047

    Morrocco Muzik Makers

Pig Knuckles / Back To School Again

    Motown: 1047 (45s)

You are viewing one of the very rarest Motown 45's in archival condition - just immaculate in every sense.

A 1963 release with the horrid "Back To School Again" as the lead side, a listen to that side you'll fully understand why this disc is RARE! Recorded in 1962, release at the end of the summer school break of 1963. Quite rightly received no airplay and sunk without trace. Apparently the a-side was a vocal session from a band from Dayton, Ohio who cut a few recording for Motown but this is the only one that got to press..

So lets talk about the 1963 FLIPSIDE which is obviously NOT the Morrocco Muzik Makers but a Mickey Stevenson & Earl McDaniels conjured fill in jam-session to give this 45 a flipside..

Any Motown student must will instantly recognize those magic tentacles of Earl Van Dyke fingering the keys of that forceful organ; who the crazy trumpeter is, I'm not sure. Brass backup is signature Choker Campbell's Big Band bringing in the heavies and then from nowhere in comes the welcome intrusion of Mike Terry, burping baritone sax, adding class to this driving Motown Jamming session.

Not credited to the Funk Brothers but all the signature notes are there...this may need more investigation but to my ears it could not be another other gathering than the "Snake Pit Soldiers" something of as mystery Motown release, as the committee totally misread that "Back To School" market with a super-awful song..

but saved the day for future Motown collectors by filling the flipside in with an informal "Let It Loose" end of day "Blast Off" that endorses what a superior band of backing musicians Mr. Gordy had employed.

Unicorn Rare especially in this impeccable condition.

    Condition Report

Flawless labels (see scan) housed in authentic Motown sleeve. Both vinyls carry full gloss and hardly a hairline ever under strong light. This is only the second time we have ever had the opportunity to auction this seriously rare disc on this auction.

    Shrine: SR 115 (45s)

    SHRINE TIME!

This filed-forever 45 find, was so very nearly a Manship Mint this Christmas because it was unplayed, with two perfect "Electric Blue labels and a full blooded red flame (see those spectacular fade-free scans) The vinyl reveals a few very mild sleeve brush hairlines under strong light nothing . Possibly caused when the hand-applied labels were stuck on. Those two iconic labels gleam like they were stuck on yesterday, vinyl plays utterly immaculate MINT absolutely no DJ wear here..

Top side " No Other Way" is a relentless, rapid fire, real-deal Northern Soul gymnastic triggering proper-stomper, with CLASS! Tight vocals, tidal-wave horns, robust lip-curled-up lead vocal, silky vocal group backup, runaway-track rhythms that drive you to the dance-floor, to relive those moves that drew so much attention back in the day.. it's amazing what records of this standing can rekindle into those tired limbs and hanging heart..

The flipside "Poor Loser" I played from my DJ box a few years back the Soul Essence's Deep Room.. is perhaps one of the most sublime 60's Sweet Soul recordings of all time... listen and weep!

Huns Review featuring The Soul Brothers

Don't Make Me Love You / Danger Zone

    Sorro: 967 (45s)

Yellow fever strikes again, on this Pennsylvania Northern Soul monster that has been proving so difficult to nail in recent times. DJ created demand wiped it completely off Northern Soul collectors map..

Any copies that may have been around 5-10-15 years ago are now safely incarcerated in DJ boxes and the best collections over Europe. Little wonder because the intro to this heralded tune is a wake up call for dance-floor... aerial trumpeting signals an urgent, near breathless lead vocal, at times gasping in desperation but those horns drive him on, to beg "Don't Make Me Love You" as surely he'll die after all see she put him through before...

Great story line, will he weaken? We never find out, but we do know he was "Stripped of his Heart, and stripped of his Soul" ..

I think he resisted the temptation of giving her a second chance..

    But can you resist?

There may well be no second chance, especially in near perfect condition throughout..

    Condition Report

Impeccable vinyl surfaces, hardly a blemish under strong light and certainly no marks to report on this play perfect disc. Both labels as you can see are spanking clean "Mellow Yellow" a real beauty.

Patty Stokes - Is It True / Good Girl (Can You Be) - Mir-A-Don

    Patty Stokes

Is It True / Good Girl (Can You Be)

    Mir-A-Don: 1005 (45s)

Since the Golden Years of Wigan Casino to today's vibrant scene, the sands of Northern Soul's musical tastes have shifted so many times. Ending up in today's diet of the well trodden paths of NS Classics, a flirt with Funk, Beat Ballad Heaven making an occasional but very welcome appearance in the more cultured DJ sets. To the super-Soulful crossover grooves saturated in emotion and class in equal amounts..

The reason I say this, here's a double-delight of Northern Soul I first heard in circa 1977 when I found a handful of Mir-A-Don 45s about 7 different 45's a few copies of each. But this one stood out as being a different label colour and by a girl at the time I'd never heard of.. Just imagine my delight when it turned out to be classic style Northern Soul.. "Good Girl (Can You Be)" was an unknown and a killer. I considered dead-right for Wigan Casino was my first thought, so I rang Richard Searling and played him it down the phone. Sounded absolutely brilliant, whether he bought a copy, I can't remember; but Soul Sam certainly did. Closely watching his reactions as he played it the barometer for the asking price. His hands started twitch and twiddle the controls of the record player (good sign), then his shoulders started to move (good sign), then I got the ultimate vote of YES!
When Soul Sam's hips started wriggle ever so slightly...(the best sign)

After that Soul Sam Dance, his poker face was useless, when he lifted the record off the decks and pronounced "Not Bad" and casually threw the record of a pile of "Maybe's". He of cause went home with a copy, at a "Not Bad" price..

But through this journey not once, did I or anyone else playing the disc notice the utterly breathtaking journey into Northern Soul Crossover that "Is It Me" deliveres.. not until after the millennium did those "shifting sands" start to move towards superior mid-paced Soulful dancers like "Is It True", today it's "Good Girl" that nobody seems to mention or play..

For me personally, "Is It True" today is a huge part of my DJ set, it is without question one of the ultimate Sister mid-tempo grooves of the time.. and seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the day.. Without exception when I drop it, somebody will come to the stage and ask "what is this...?"

Click the soundfile and take a breath, Patty Stokes is about to hit you with impeccable Northern Soul Crossover, followed by a top-drawer, classic style Northern Soul girl dancer, backed beautifully by "The Ascots" harmonies.. this too is a fantastic tune that may yet have it's day.. when the sands shift back the quality Northern Soul 45s that haven't been played to death.

    Albert Washington

A Case Of The Blues / One More Chance

    Rye: 954 (45s)

We have only ever listed Cincinnati Sizzler once before, since then demand has sky-rocketed on the back of the few lucky DJ owners who have championed it's persuasive raw qualities that command you to dance..

Taking over from where his Northern Soul Monster "I'm Your Man" left off starting to cram the dance-floors and rattle a few ceilings around the Manchester area. Every note and snarl as good as "I'm Your Man" but 50 times rarer. We are anticipating big things from this 45 in the very near future.. there's a buzz on this tune right now... and that buzz is gonna build into a deafening drone of wanting..

The rap intro is bulldozed by a deluge of horns that Albert's roaring vocal is so very capable of riding.. those rolling bursts of brass. Gravel-coated tonsils spout a case for the Blues.. oh and how..

Looking for a showstopping slab of Northern Soul? At this moment "A Case Of The Blues" is the most compelling piece of R&B you could ever drop the arm on...

and it's only gonna get BIGGER!!!

    Ken Parker

We Must Be In Love / Wish I Could Make you Mine

    A&M : AMS 7092 (45s)

When A-list modern soul DJ's start murmurings of " have you heard that Ken Parker on A&M?" ..

the internet goes dry over-night of any copies that may have been "floating" in unknown-limbo, especially as recently it's started to appear on a few play lists... then we discover the flipside is equally captivating..the hunt for a clean copy of the 45 that's about to spring forth and shake up those lazy Sundays when passed over quality comes to life..

So when one of my favourite rare-soul DJ's drops the arm on it, in became indelible in my mind, every day I dug through unprocessed stock in the warehouse i hope I fall upon a copy, as I could wait to hear it again. Well despite my flaking brain cells my persistence paid off.. I wasn't disappointment, "Plumby's" taste has always been impeccable and both sides lit up my senses.

So why not get in on the ground-floor, as this 45 ain't no easy find; both sides ripple with that exclusive potential that starts with a murmur, but ends in that all too familiar scream.. "I Shudda Bought It When It Was Around for 1/2 that price..!!"

The auction records disappear only if they are paid for on the pay now button, all records are deleted when Ordered we are trying to think of a way to leave them up after the PAY NOW button has been activated. The winner paid the moment he won it. People who pay next day or by phone the record stays visible until we update

Patti Young - Head And Shoulders (Above The Rest) / The Valiant Kind - Ernstrat

    Patti Young

Head And Shoulders (Above The Rest) / The Valiant Kind

    Ernstrat: 495 (45s)

It's not very often Detroit looks to New York for inspiration, but this rarely encountered Northern Soul trophy did just that, when in 1965 Mike Theodore rearranged the Clyde Otis & Norbert DeCoteaux composition recorded on MGM by Marlina Mars. Whilst Marlina's version is a wonderful piece of Northern Soul, Patti Young's infinitely rarer take, carries that irresistible Detroit dominance, Al Saxon & Mike Theodore construct around Patti's bewitching vocal; sweetened by shrill backing girls.. bolstered by honkin' horns, crafting distilled girl Northern Soul at it's most persuasive..

The in New York / Detroit hybrid works perfectly. A record owned by very few DJ's and since it's bootlegging on the infamous Out-Of-The-Past label in the early 70's, this Ernstrat original comes intoi view...

But for the Detroit devotees the overlooked flipside is pure Motor City magic, written & arranged by the gifted Mike Theodore the ingenious "The Valiant Kind" with it's exploding bomb intro, is saturated in homegrown inventive Detroit styling...fabulously simplistic piano intro moves to the side, for a bevvy of Soul Sister to deliver a patriotic message when from nowhere explodes a saxophone solo to elevate the session to another level.. more exploding bombs, machine guns as the heroic-war-backdrop is emphasized, but all you'll remember from this directive is the spectacular saxophone intrusion and those silky girl vocals.

Insanely rare in this fine clean condition, and a record that only a dedicated few, can boast of ever owning..

Major Lance - Too Hot To Hold / Dark And Lonely - UK Columbia

    Major Lance

Too Hot To Hold / Dark And Lonely

    Columbia: 7688 (45s)

By far "The Major's" rarest British 45 may we dare to say his best? But we know you will be wowed by this massive slab of quality underplayed Northern Soul....

The only reason this 45 did not eclipse "Investigate" "The Beat" "Ain't No Soul (In These Old Shoes" "Everybody Loves A Good Time etc. back in the day; is the same reason many top-drawer Northern Soul dancers languish in the background' is it's serious unavailability. Since it's 1965 swift deletion causing a severe dearth of copies, only a few DJ's had a copy to play, thus the aforementioned release stole the limelight lifting Major Lance into a demigod on these shores..

So take a listen to a pure slab of Chicago Northern Soul that back in the 60's and early 70's was very seldom aired, but today I do hear an occasional drop of the Okeh release, and always to a rapturous response. At this moment poise for bigger and better things,as this fantastic tune is not an easy capture as USA original, but as this 1965 UK press it's a different story.

British collectors check through your Major Lance 45's, we're betting this 45 is not there ad if it is, it is not totally flawless like this copy..

After you've been compelled to dance to "The Major" at his most-insistent.. flip it over for "Dark And Lonely" again Major Lance is his superior-self on this Billy Butler song..

Two great sides only surpassed by the spectacular condition..

    Ronnie & Robyn

Sidra's Theme / Blow Out The Candle

    Sidra : 9007 DJ (45s)

We have talked about this monumental Northern Soul instrumental before, how it jolted me into silence as I chattered away.. the unusual genial intro, instantly caught my ear, so out of sync with the rest of the records I'd heard that day inside Whitchuch All Dayer.. slowly building on ripples of Harp plucks..you just knew something was about to happen as the rhythmic rattle of drumsticks intensified.. then the horn blasted through the calm BRILLIANT!

"WOW what's this tune?" ...and I wasn't the only one standing in open-mouthed astonishment.. Ian Levine had announced it with his usual gusto, giving it a cover-up title I just cannot remember but I'm sure he made it sound like it was gonna be the biggest, best, most-wanted sound of that summer 1973 I'm thinking.. he wasn't wrong either..

I do delight in Northern Soul classics with the capacity to take you back to the times when everything was new to the ears, but branded then into your brain for the next week..

"Sidras Theme" did that, I think we even made a special trip the Blackpool Mecca for the of chance to hear it again, back in those days the cover-up tease with it's weird and wonderful christenings were part of the joy of being a Northern Soul boy..

This promo copy that took me all the way from my untidy desk at home, to Whitchurch 1973 is flawless - two perfect labels, play surfaces hardly reveal a blemish, plays perfect..

A listing especially aimed at Northern Soul old-school collectors who want to leap into the virtual time-machine that records of this calibre give you the key to..

    Perfect Touch

Your Love Has Got The Power / Your Love Has Got The Power part 2

    H.E.M.M.: 4463 (7")

RARE street-level Detroit Soulful dancer making it's debut on this auction - yes this is our first copy of Soul Sam's cover-up.

A neighborhood project omitting writers, producers, arranger etc always a sign of real local obscurity. But in this case not a sign of amateurish approach to what is a convincing rarity.

Simple piano intro, is joined by gently measured percussion, then heavenly girls press home the chorus that will feature throughout this addictive groove.. lead vocal, is supported by those shrill Sisters whilst the mid-tempo dance arrangement takes shape.. flip it over for part 2 (unlike most part 2's) this one is not just a continuation of the a-side this side is more insistent hitting peaks the a-side doesn't attempt, lengthy instrumental breaks peppered with silky ladies choruses..

Local, rare and memorable Detroit with edge and individuality..

Various Artists - Chartbusters U.S.A. - UK Columbia

    Various Artists

    Chartbusters U.S.A. / 1965 UK press

    Columbia: SX 6016 (LP)

You are viewing the most-wanted, least seen of all Soul compilation albums, the fabled UK Columbia 1965 tribute to Chicago Soul and the legendary Okeh label "CHARTBUSTERS U.S.A"

14 tracks by the then mostly unknown on British airwaves, Walter Jackson, Ted Taylor, Vibrations, Billy Butler and the Chanters, Artistics and the already idolized Major Lance.. check out the back cover scan to reveal that breathtaking track listing.
With no USA counterpart, this was however an album that sold virtually nothing upon release; unless you really were very "hip" those artist's names would have meant nothing to ,most people couple with Columbia's amazingly poor marketing nevr mentioned the word Soul or R&B on the front cover. The back cover is only marginally more information, to the style of what you expect if you played it..

Thus an unparalleled album passed everybody by, for a fate of early deletion and extremely rarity..

I feel privileged today to be able to offer, a pristine copy of this insanely elusive LP. Our first flawless copy in memory..

Vivian Jones - Money Can't Buy My Love - Lark

    Vivian Jones

Money Can't Buy My Love / Crying

    Lark: 102 (45s)

Going from Detroit Northern Soul girl-sounds that seldom that seldom-surface, to an insanely rare 45 bristling with attitude and drive..

One of the most absurdly rare sister-shakers on that "impossible "Lark" label. Just like Bernie Moore this girl offering is an exhilarating dance-floor-destroyer made even more dynamic by Ms. Jones's growling delivery how "Money Don't Move" her..
She'll certainly move you though...as the relentless guitar riffs lay down a dance track you just can't ignore; embroidered with shrill girl choruses, a sprinkling of a male group harmony response and a saxophonist who dresses up the background perfectly..

This production has everything, just like Bernie Moore not a single corner is cut, as a full studio delivers guts, defiance, held together by perfectly timed hand-claps.

This song is top-drawer Detroit with a rarity pedigree send to none, and the only reason it's not yet a Holy Grail, is because there has never been enough copies in existence to go round all the A-list DJ's to make it so..

Listen to hear what I'm a applauding as well at the insane rarity, this is truly rousing Sister-Northern at it's most magnificent..

Friday Brown - 32nd Love Affair - Fontana TF 736

    Friday Brown

    32nd Love Affair / Born A Woman

    Fontana: TF 736 (45s)

So very rarely comes to market, one that even the most avid British Northern Soul collector, most probably will not own.

From the magical year of 1966, this Mancunian lass started her recording career with Parlophone her first record sold nothing and this follow up on Fontana sold even less. Changing producers never saw a change in her single sales fortunes and after 8 x 45rpm release over 7 years, sadly this accomplished sing/songwriter released no more..Before you today is her best and extremely rare single..

Pure Northern Soul intro, leads into full kitchen-sink production includes a searing bank of strings, girl choir purring perfect Northern Soul response whilst cradling Friday's imposing vocal; as she discharges a defiant message to the ex-lover "It's My 32nd Love Affair". I just love the lyrics, her carefree attitude, and her spectacular vocal that rides high on this huge production..

For me this leaves other Brit contenders for No. 1 Northern Soul recording British Girl 45 in the dust. Step aside Paula Parfitt - your love is not so wonderful, Kiki Dee - That Magic Carpet has been in the air for far too long, time to land for Friday Brown to let lose with this much-rare and for me less "Pop" orientated.

British production it may be, but for me this is pure Northern Soul from a gal with one hell of a voice..

The flipside is another big production that showcases the strength of her voice even stronger..

Stick Helen Shapiro, Paula Parfitt, Kiki Dee etc. at the back of your DJ box, time for Friday Brown to have her long overdue day .. standout lyrics, killer vocal, huge production with pure Northern Soul moments..

    LOVE IT!

Relentless dance fuel that's cramming them onto the floor everywhere it's played..

A fantastic furious hunk of R&B shimmering with smooth class.. from Joe's emphatic delivery..

An essential NS DJ weapon against the "same old"

    Condition Report

Bright light reveals a few very fine hairline, but nothing that reacts on the stylus (listen) Unlike our previous listing in2015 both labels are free from writing, stickers tears or stains. From memory there is a very very weak "Pink" fade to the background colour.. hardly worth a mention (see scans)
