    I have a different perspective.

I remember when "Hey Little Way Out Girl" was a Richard Searling exclusive he had covered up as the Del Capris!  It was the biggest record in the country. A virtually unobtainable massive sound that you could only hear at the very best upfront allnighters💥. It's one of those records that sound awesome loud in an allnighter and the top dj's  really wanted to able to get a copy to play!

Everything changed when it came out on the Grapevine single. Then anyone could have it and it was dropped from all major playlists.

Playing it at home doesn't have the same effect as it did in those far off allnighters!

Agreed, also "Construction" seemed to really suit being played at Station Road.

(p.s. I have both "10 miles high" and "Hey little way out girl". They don't come close to being the most guilty of "guilty pleasures" in my record collection!!! I feel much better now I've said that)

  2. I think it's a difficult one to fix a price. There are a fair few about BUT, very often, they are "tatty/well used/kicked around a warehouse floor" type things - also know as "OK for DJing with!

I've seen plenty of lower grade one's go for £500 to £1,000.

I'm sure that a nice copy such as yours would coax out a MUCH better price. So, an auction would be the most likely best option. Lot's of people are happy to pay a high premium for a top copy.

With regard to John Bowie, I remember in the late 1970's when someone on a trip to USA came back with LOADS - just like Frank Beverly on Sassy. Pep was selling them at something like £4. So, to see these at current values is incredible

  3. We seem to doing OK. There are dozens of Sparrows and Dunnocks. I made a few more nest boxes for the Blue Tits early this year and 2 of them had residents! So there are also lots of both Blue and Great Tits.

Sadly, a Sparrow Hawk has also worked this out!

There was a Green Woodpecker who bought the new addition to the family. This was a month or so ago.

The Hedgehogs seem to have moved on. I think they got the hump when we stopped putting Dried Mealworms out.

I think we do OK with the wildlife as we put lots of food out.

I was thinking about doing a pond but couldn't decide. Wildlife Pond people (Joel Ashton does lots on youtube) seem to want to avoid having pumps. But, I'm not so keen on having a swamp at the end of the garden. ANY ADVICE?

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the hand-written dates were put on the records by a Soul/Gospel DJ in the Washington DC area, possibly Maryland/Virginia. The presumption is that when he received records from a sales rep, he dated them being a fastidious person. The date could of course relate to the time he filed the records in the many cabinets he had. The records are from a large hoard sourced in an estate sale last Autumn - this treasure trove is being dripped out on eBay, most Soul items having a handwritten date on them. Normally, we collectors prefer to have our purchases without WOL, but in this case, the dates have helped to narrow down the window when Eddie Parker was pressed. Any further Ashford records with date stamps from radio stations would therefore be of interest to us.

    Hi,

I posted a scan of my copy in the previous thread. However, may as well add to this one so they are all in the same place.

On mine, they went slightly "rogue" and used a red pen with dashes between the numbers !

Hi folks.  I had a James Brown King record from his late King period, which was a public service song telling kids not to take drugs.  It was on the last label design, with a white background and artistic lettering.  I think it was DJ only, and its catalogue number was not in the regular series.  I think it had 2 letters a dash and 2 numbers (like JS-23).  It was a funky dance tune.  The only part I can remember was: "Don't take drugs, y'all, there KILLERS!  Good Gawd!  It was very funny.  I had it in L.A. in 1966 or 1967, while attending university.  I took to a friend's house in The hot San Fernando Valley, for him to hear it.  Four of us went in my car to Busch Gardens to take the free tour, and drink a lot of free (American watered down beer) tongue.png.  I inadvertently left the record sitting on my dashboard top.  After a couple hours of drinking and relieving ourselves we returned to my car to find the 45 warped like it had been wearing curlers to get a perm!

I was heartbroken.  It was the only copy of that record I'd ever seen.  I never found another.  I've looked for it on You-Tube, but can't remember the title.  When I describe it, they just keep sending me to Polydor's much later, "King Heroin".

Do any of you know of the King record, and its title.  If you have it, I'd also like to see a scan.  Thanks for any help.  It was pants-wetting funny! wink.png

    Hi @Robbk

Promo only "Public Service Announcement" 45s, one of James's rarest singles.

Apparently only promoted by Starday-King Records, Inc. mail out exclusively to "Black Radio Stations".

Incredibly elusive and in flawless condition.

In repetitive "Trumpian" style JB preaches in "Drugs Are Super Bad, Super Bad, Super Bad, Super Bad..."

On the flip Bobby Byrd, repeats the message over a proper hard hitting FUNK rhythms track.

Ideal for Breaks, Beats and comping... both the menacing vocal and the edgy music begging to be utilized.

For the serious JB collector this is hard to find, in mint condition very hard.

  6. Whenever I've been successful on John's auction, I paid the winning bid plus postage. With those Omega auctions that run occasionally, you end up paying an additional 28.8% (ish!!). In that situation, if you will go as high as say £500, your highest bid would be £388 (£500 divided by 1.28). Equally, if you win an item for £500, you'll pay £644 (£500 multiplied by 1.28).

    Hope that helps.

  7. Just as a reference or bit of additional information, I have this Temptations British Test Press of TMG 633. It is vinyl and has the raised KT mark on the center and correct machine stamps on both sides. There's no sign of LPFB on it.

There doesn't seem to be much demand or value in these. I got this from eBay a few years ago for a couple of pounds. I don't think anyone else bid.

  8. I like to buy Canadian records occasionally. I'm sure that I was watching a few items from a Canadian seller, very recently, that included one of these. The starting bid was $50. It didn't sell on first listing. When they relisted, I think it went for the minimum bid of $50.

If you like classic records on something a little different, they're nice to pick up. However, it doesn't seem to be a big market with mass appeal.

    Cheers

  9. I don't think that "The Soul Scene" has any more or less "Neurodivergent" folks than any other special interest or hobby. It just provides a platform or outlet for those traits to be displayed.

About 35 years ago, my wife bought me a scalextric set as a bit of a joke present. I bought a few more bits and bobs and, after a while, I visited a "slot car" racing club! They were all nice people, but talk about obsessive behavior... !!

Hi KB Ady Dundas has an EX copy on EB for £1200. Good luck. Angus

    Hi Angus,

Thanks for getting in touch. I've seen that one and the one on Discogs. Think it's a little too much based on the current market and info from a couple of people on this site re prices they've sold for in the last 6 months.

So... I'll wait for the right copy at the right price. Always more records than money!!!

    All the best,

  11. Hi, I'm looking for an original in nice condition please.

Angela Davis - My Love Is So Strong.

I've seen the 2 on Discogs which I think are way too expensive, taking into account recent sales that I'm aware of.

Please send a p.m. with details of condition and the price you are looking for. Payment by Paypal.

    Thanks
