  1. Fraser Dunn has a guest John Macdonald of the Dundee Northern Soul Club on today's soulful allsorts Listen live at www.subcity.org between 2 and 4 pm. The show will be available on Listen Again later today Saturday 31st March
  2. Somebody believed in the A side Jumping Jack Flash but it only got to 58 in the UK chart.
  3. and Mike Marwick on Smooth 105.2 glasgow.
  4. "It's like hospital radio with less Matt Monroe" How dare you have a go at the hard working volunteers of Hospital radio a subject you don't know much about if you can't even spell Monro. Anyway if you were in touch you would know Daniel O'Donnell is the patients' favourite. He's done three rock'n'roll albums. I'm sure there's a Michael McDonald/ Michael Bolton Motown tribute waiting in the wings and then he and the Mighty Mainliners get down with the Funk.
  5. I'd be worried if I did I am led to believe that every time it has been re issued, even on CD there have been differences in the mix.
  6. I met david Belcher today and he explained a bit more of what's happening to Saga. It becomes Smooth as of next weekend, and the R&R shiow isgoing however its presenter Mike Marwick is taking over the soul show which is OK by me. There will be less C&W and old time music. Glen Michael is retiring. Ofcom has blessed the change of ownership and format. So I doubt if Ofcom are particularly worried about Leith FM other than them wasting £50000 on the Ross Revenge.
  7. They were terrific. I've still got Right on Be free. Their backing band were shit hot too. Elektra spent quite a bit of money on them but no bi sales ensued. some notes here Soul walking
  8. Neither cellarfull of motown appeared on vinyl. they did issue the Motown Remixed set on three albums https://www.juno.co.uk/products/180915-01.htm Motown Uk has issued a number of 7" singles in the last few years including the Motown 40 series with the first official appearance on vinyl of Do i Love You by Chris Clarke. The singles from stevie wonder's last album appeared on CD and 7" with a old track on teh B side in at least one case.
  9. Offcom seriously don't give a F***. licenses are traded all the time. That's Saga turning into Smooth next week and we've lost the R&R show, the C&W show, the Fifties sixties show all part of a license application for a station targeted at the over 50's. the Soul show is being retained with a new presenter. Where were Offcom then. You were part of the RSLs that won the license so what's got up the station manager's ass. Vegas has Saturday afternoon on Leith which of course reflects the great local interest in Gambling (greyhounds and Bingo) cabaret (the Hibs Social Club) and Showgirls. You could point out the listener response to the the RSL, you experience of DJ'ing locally and the number of soul based nights in Edinburgh (including Motherfunk, Modern Lovers, the Jazz bar and the number of thriving specialist record shops which stock the music. The problem is the station does not have decks, doesn't want them and does not need them for any other show. so pre record as live ( your argument for an archive suggests your show does not have to be live) and if a student radio station can live with your show it must have some attrction for a wider range of people than the committee see it. Who else has a specialist show and have a chat with them. you may find out you are being picked on.
  10. Despite the number of tracks crammed onto each side of an LP I always thought the vinyl collection was better mastered. The original Cd releases used stereo dubs in too many cases. The latest and remasterd version of the CD collection can be had for £3 to £5 per disc in Fopp.
  11. It's an original neptunes tune, no samples but i can catch a resemblance to frankie.
  12. This is what is frustrating about the article. By the late sixties and inspired by the 1969 Motown chart revival a number of UK producers were having hits with Motown and soul inspired material. Some by covering soul songs Everlasting Love for example and others by writing their own e.g Tony McCaulay and Build me up Buttercup. But these were written for and bought by mainstream pop fans and possibly regulars ar their local Mecca Ballroom. Thye were not written for the relatively small Northern scene.
  13. Bought it in Bournemouth whilst at a Conference and still play it on Reflections on Northern soul. A great collection and before the days when they would put out a vinyl double album as an alternative sound source.
  14. Bought this last week so thanks for the info on the band. Check vocalist credits Otis Adams on one side and Hazel Martin on other.
  15. The BB showed James Brown in Concert on BBC 4 , repeated it several times and then showed it on BBC 2 all within the last six months when he was alive. They also recorded James and his band in 2003 ansd showed that on several occasions. https://www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms/jamesbrown/ BBC radio 2 ran a four part radio series on James Brown last year and Mark Lamarr put together a two hour tribute after his death which also went out on radio 2. i can't recall a tag at the end that said "except for viewers in Northern Ireland"
  16. My last reflections on northern soul on radiomagnetic was based on playlists submitted to soul source and other soul discussion groups. I called it current spins although my survey was done in November. It was drawn froma half a dozen sets including at least one oldies set and ended up looking like this. The Vondells Hey Girl You've Changed Airtown Custom Monique If You Love Me (Show Me) Maurci Pat & The Blenders Just Because Fast Eddie Sonny Til Tears And Misery RCA Darrow Fletcher What Have I Got Now Jacklyn The Constellations I Didn't Know How To Gemini Star Barbara Carr My mama told me Chess Martha Starr No part time love for me Thelma John Bowie Gonna miss a good thing Merben Tobi Lark Happiness Is Here Topper Emanuel Lasky Don't lead me on Thelma Parliaments Heart Trouble Golden World Billy Kennedy Groovy Generation Thelma Chris Clark Don't be too long VIP Lillian Dupree Hide and Seek D-Town All because of you All because of you Sport Larry Clinton She's wanted Dynamo Jimmy Burns I really love you Erica Soul Set Will you ever learn Bi - Me Marvin Gaye My love for you Tamla Motown Bobby Sheen Something New To do Warner brothers THE CONTINENTAL 4 THE WAY I LOVE YOU JAY-WALKING Masterpiece Love Affair YPSI Willie & the Mighty Mags Check it Baby All Platinum Gentlemen 4 Cant keep a good man down Wand Gene Chandler There Was A Time Brunswick Martha + The Vandellas You 've Been In Love Too Long Gordy Johnny James Tell You About My Girl Circle Brenda Holloway Think It Over Stardust For ,more details on which clubs' play lists i used and for a link to listen to the show go here. https://www.radiomagnetic.com/shows/index.php?id=306
  17. Take Six Short 1963 Eden Kane, Vince Hill, Shane Fenton, The Viscounts, Alan Klein Alan Klein and Julie Samuel sing: Come Outside/The Viscounts:Let's Twist again/Steve Perry sings: Ginny Come Lately Parkside/ British Lion Douglas Hickox Alan Klein wrote the screenplay for what a crazy world and released an album "Well at least it's british" that was a minor influence on Britpop. He was in the touring version of The New Vaudeville Band. He co wrote Fichley Central with John Stephens and this one Three Coins in a Sewer https://tinyurl.com/yu26v2 He does not own Abkco. I beleiev he ended up writing pantomimes
  18. So was I and so was the bastard who stole them off me. They were that good. You put them down for a minute and play some UK originals then.....
  19. The success of James Brown live at the Apollo. It was live but King also released albums with applause dubbed in e.g. Showtime.
  20. No mention of Paula Parfitt, Muriel day and Chapter 5 never mind Wigan's Chosen few who must have exerted some influence on british soul.
  21. The Playlist is here https://www.subcity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4286Playlist and if you miss the show Listen Again is here https://www.subcity.org/listenagain.py?bw=h...lay=Recent&
  22. I certainly enjoyed the Jazz and folk series but possibly individuals with a more specialist knowledge did not.
  23. I used it once years ago with a dealer with good feedback and there was no problem and no high charge either. More of a commssion than paypal . However it is open to scamming and Western Union advise not to use it with an unknown selller. More detail here Western Union scam Given its bad rep on ebay I'm surpprised at dealers making it their "soul" method of payment which suggests they do wish to avoid refunds.
