Miss Mellua did a pretty good version of John Mayall's Crawling up a hill on her album. Joss Stone's album was produced by Betty Wright with Timmy Thomas and some other old TK / Malaco musicians on board too.

Is this the guy who had label scans lifted directly from Greg Tormo's site and could only accept cash in small and used bills?

Yes Gramps pan's people will be on in a minute.

A surprisingly good night, with some great music from John, Fraser Dunn and Butch from Dundee. (For some reason or other I always thought Butch was a girl's name in Dundee.) The Royal Andeluvian Order of Buffalos has an L shaped room as a lounge bar in its Glasgow premises. A portrait of the Queen overloooks the dancefloor and she frowns at talc throwers.A compact dance floor meant not too much room but enough space for the crowd that was there. Lots of people jammed round tables which meant you had to chat to your neighbours. Lager was £1:80 a pint and I stayed till almost the end so it must have been good.

Of course in Dundee Jazz is a film about a big fish with loads of teeth;)

"What I know about Joe Hinton could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Extensive detective work (ie: Google) reveals that he was gospel singer before turning to soul music but none of his releases were big hits and, sadly, he died of skin cancer in 1968 at the age of 39. That's it basically, I've never seen a picture of the guy and "Funny" is the only recording of his I've ever heard, but it's great enough for me to want to hear more. A 1964 cover of a Willie Nelson song, Hinton turns in a sublime half-sung, half-spoken vocal with a high note at the end that's like clouds parting and a host of heavenly angels appearing. I'd love to know if the rest of his work is as fabulous or was it just a one-off moment of Godliness but unfortunately his entire oeuvre is long out of print. So if some kind person from the record label that owns his stuff is reading this, I'd like it re-issued on nice shiny CD please (pretty please) so I can answer that question without shelling out major greenbacks on the original vinyl. So come on Mr. Record Exec, the world doesn't need anymore Bob Dylan box sets, rescue Joe Hinton from dusty obscurity." https://www.duvigneaud.net/James_Crawford.html Londonlee

One would think they might have added that given the high price of CD's in the UK that's not surprising. Ask a journalist to query a press release,

Your spelling is as accurate as your gossip. Kenny is selling some of his records: true. The rest of your statement mmmm..... Where's Dave Flynn, he nailed the Chicago find.?

I hope to catch some of it whilst i am on my break tonight, Last year I tuned in with a flask of coffee in one hand and a Tuna salad roll in the other, sitting with a car engine on and tuned to radio 2 before ducking back into The Edinburgh College of Art and hitting the decks. Home listeners may care to hit a chat room try www.nightowlclub.com

You can hear Nilsson's version here https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...008925?v=glance Has Randy Newman recorded a version as it is not any of his albums in my collection? There's a version by Caludine Longet and another by Haper's Bizarre. He wrote Somebody's Waiting for Gene McDaniels. B side of Spanish lace?

Tall Paul Robinson plays The Sonics and other 6T's garage stuff at his monthly night The GoGo in Edinburgh. He and Angus A GoGo have a guest each month playing Northern Soul. It's a young crowd and a great gig full of people who want to dance. For me it's a chance to play out some records that others would regard as too played out or too well known. Len Barry's 1,2, 3 and Shirley Ellis and The Clapping Song sound wonderful played off 45's in a club. They went down a storm. I've played Patti Austen, the Butlers and other recent Northern plays too. The GoGo is a chance to indulge oneself by playing records that meet the criteria of instant danceability. And you can certainly dance to The Sonics Try their version of Money.

Roll With The Punches Garnett Mimms Or Carol Fran
FrankM replied to timthemod's topic in All About the SOUL
You'll find the Carol Fran version of Roll with the Punches on a CD called Dr. Good Soul. Unfortunately the week I played it on reflections was not captured for the archives. -
I played it on Friday night at the Caledonia Soul Club . Tommy Cockburn put me on to it (I think). It's also on the Best of Darlene Love CD https://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/...arlene+Love.htm I must try Stumble and Fall. This could be the night by The MFQ is a favourite of mine and Brian Wilson. Rodney Bingheimer used it as the theme for his Los Angeles radio show.

Look for a laptop with a LINE IN as well as a MIC input.if you want to record in stereo. You can use an external sound card with an ethernet connection. And if you are going to use it to DJ with you'll need Traktor or PCDJ. and possibly powerpoint to show you have the original singles;)

The annual reflections on northern soul Christmas party will be on air on Saturday 25th December if you fancy tuning in to radiomagnetic.com at 2:30pm for two hours of festive fun.

Lennon and and a whole load of other sixties bands played Arthur Alexander songs. A few years ago Record Collector did a survey on what Merseybeat bands performed live and recorded. After I(I think) Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, Arthur Alexander was the third most popular source of songs. Johnny Kidd and the Pirates must have been the first UK group to do a cover of "A Shot of Rhythm and Blues". As you said the Beatles and the Rolling Stones covered his songs along with The Bee Gees. Lennon did have a portable juke box which he carted about with him on tour and there was a film about it on The South Bank Show earlier this year. Unfortunately Arthur did not make the cut for the accompanying album probably because no film existed of him which they could have used in the documentary. https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=samples#disc_1. They might have heard it on the new Double CD that they wrote the sleeve notes for.
