  1. BBC 4 10pm: Sam Cooke: Legend A documentary exploring his career and personal life, from his gospel roots to his untimely demise, and everything in between. Featuring interviews with Bobby Womack and Aretha Franklin, and narrated by Jools Holland. on New year's eve. No wonder I missed it.
  2. Too many Rights issues involved here apparently. The dreaded ABCKO own the SAR catalogue and protect it very carefully.
  3. Europa in friars street Stirling which is near the main drag. You have to go through to the Back shop. Friars Street
  4. The guy was offered and turned down $30 000 which in my opinion makes it a cheaper record than Do I love you. 78 Collector However I understand this guy now holds the record for paying the most money for a single. John Tefteller
  5. A few years ago Bank of scotland pound notes were being sold on e bay at £1:50 and above. Then some bugger had to go and spoil it all by pointing out the bank were still printing them.
  6. I hear what you're saying Stuart but it's shutting the barn door. I have a decent project debut deck and a laptop with cool edit to record onto but for convenience when I want to record a bundle of 45's I use the twin decks and cheapo mixer. Decent cartridges help with any deck as well as balancing them properly. It is Northern Soul records we are dubbing after all not 180gm virgin vinyl so there's no need to go all HiFi. Using twin decks means recording 30 singles in real time, cutting the wav up on Cool Edit , and then normalising the sound level which means you have a CDR in less than two hours. Given the choice buy a Project Debut MK 3 SB with built in pre amp Project Debut Mk 3 SB Keep the Ortofon OM 5 Stylus for your 45's and invest £30 at mantra audio for a Super OM 10 upgrade for your favourite album.
  7. Your mixer is your pre amp. There should be switches above each SLIDE FADER. have them pointing towards PHONO. make sure your decks are plugged into the PHONO in on your mixer. I know nothing about Phillips CD recorders. Pete Smith is your man for that. However when you pre fade the record the LED display on the mixer should be peaking at one Orange Bar. ie it should light all the way up to orange but not turn red. Adjust using SLIDE FADER and GAIN/TRIM KNOB You should have a phono lead going from the RECORD outs on your mixer to LINE IN on your CD recoder. If there is no RECORD out use the AMP phonos and feed your speakers from the BOOTH/ZONE (have your BASS, MID, TREBLE KNOBS at 12 O'Clock) This should give you a decent level to record at. Phone the shop from whence you bought it. If anyone here does have a CD Recorder your suggestions please.
  8. Keep an eye on who's playing the Caledonia Soul Club.
  9. You have a feedback loop somewhere. Mute everything bar what you are recording on your on screen mixer.
  10. Ooh I bet a few males looked over their shoulder just to check if their partners were transmitting thought to their screens.
  11. The signal from a record deck is that weak it needs to be pre amplified before it is sent to thh power amplifier and the PHONO inputs to the mixer go through that stage. The LINE input is for CD players (and any other sound source, minidisk, cassette player, etc). Do not plug plug anything other than record decks into the PHONO inputs. Some mixers have three outputs AMP/LINE OUT to the power amplifier BOOTH or ZONE to an amplifier and monitor speaker. When you use a Mic this output should automatically fade so there's no feedback. RECORD Use this to record your set onto cassette, minidsisk, computer etc. "the mixer and decks were in a mates lads bedroom, he got them for a christmas present and never really used it . " They have been the Cabbage Patch dolls for the teens for the last few years.
  12. The Omnitronic is a cheap copy of the Technics and is a favourite with ned trance DJ's. It has a reputation as being one of the better copies as it is German made. New they cost £158 each. As long as you are not scratching , or mixing you'll be OK with them. Get some decent cartridges if they still have their original cheapos in place. The CMX 360 appears to be a typical £70 three channel mixer. Try before you buy. Is the mixer noise free, does the crossfader work ie. can you only hear one channel when you slide it to one end. Check the phono inputs and outputs by playing records and listening. Pan the sound from left to right. It's the phonos which tend to go on cheap mixers. Ask what the set up was used for. i e was it a mobile disco which means tough wear for equipment. and check e bay for prices of similar set ups.
  13. The language might be French , it is in fact Flemish but it ain't called Belgium that's where they live not what they speak.
  14. Nick Cohn wrote the article "Tribal Rites Of A New Saturday Night" for the New Yorker magazine after he moved there from London. It came out of a search for a dancer he had seen at a New York club. I don't know why John Badham would have gone to Wigan when New York had some great clubs.
  15. "and the tunes were bangin out of BK but KTF next door was strangely silent........" Deliberate or Freudian slip. KFC for soul music surely?
  16. With you on the Shure cart but the Pre amp at £100 would take up a quarter of his budget. The Rega is a better home deck than the Technics and is worth that investment of a good phono stage. The Project Debut II comes with an inbuilt phono and you can upgrade the Ortofon by changing the stylus for £50.
  17. I've got two Technics for DJ'ing but my Project Debut with built in pre amp cost me £130 and that's what I listen to at home Cambridge Audio A1 VERSION 3 Black (Stereo Amplifier) £80 Cambridge Audio DAB300 Black (DAB Tuner) £120 Mission M70S Beech Speakers £50 or Gale GOLD MONITOR MK2 Beech Speakers £80 Cambridge Audio ATLANTIC 1M (Interconnect) x Two £20 all of the above available at Richer sounds I don't know if you're gonna get a Cd recorder for £100. Why not record onto your computer? If you don't have Sky then a Freeview tuner is a good option and will be cheaper than an FM or Dab Radio Tuner Check here for your TV Channels and radio Stations Freeview E.G Humax F2-FOX T £90 and it has a digital output FrankM
  18. I do hope you got the Technics cheap. To quote the Irishman giving directions "Well I would not have started from here." If your main aim is to copy vinyl to CD all you need is a pre amp so whatever amp you buy make sure it has an input marked "phono" or get a seperate pre amp. Plug your deck into the pre amp and then the preamp into your amp Cheap pre amp here https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5&rd=1&tc=photo]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....o]Cheap pre amp Decent pre amp here https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5&rd=1&tc=photo]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp://https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....oto]QED pre amp You can also plug your pre amp straight into your CD recorder. And use decent cable not the stuff that comes with equipment. What kind of cartridge came with the Technics? Shure and Ortofons are normally favoured and Stantons are better than other cheapos. The sound is superior. Do you have Sky? Whether you buy an FM tuner, a DAB tuner you rae looking at an external aerial. I record onto computer but other on here prefer CD recorders. I'll let them recommend. Apologies for the curt response but I hope it helps.
  19. I played a couple of tracks on reflections yesterday. Tom Moulton who started remixing stuff in the seventies has stretched out Stoned Love and Z Trip has given a laid back feel to I Want you back. it is a contemporary album as someone pointed out on soulfuldetroit there was a Motown remix album in 1994 tragetted on teh european dance market. Several of the tracks are aimed at the steppers market , none of them could be classed in any shape or form as northern soul. Even their original mixes were not northern soul. For soem reason or other there is a US and an International version of this CD.
  20. I know who bought it and and he has not put it up for sale.
  21. The person who bought the above had previously paid about £15 to £20 for re issues and about £30 each for some cheapo originals and then bids £2000 and ups it by another few hundred to win the thing. Interesting to say the least.
  22. Mary Fox played it on her Northern Soul show on BBC radio stoke and caused ructions. Wasn't it a big mod revival tune?
  23. it doubled in price after Levine tipped it last year on ANS;) I DJ'd in support of Cado Belle and I still see drummer Davy Roy. He popped into a Tsunami fundraiser when I was playing records in between bands. Apart from Chris Andrews all of the acts were Scottish, Maramalade, Nazareth, the Blue Nile so I ttook some Scottish records to play as well The Poets, AWB and Cado Belle. Well he bought me a pint.
