  1. When there was a limit on playing records on the BBC, it did not apply to new releases which could be played for review purposes as long as the label and number were given.
  2. I think the Caledonia Soul club accidentally attracts new people to the scene. Martin, Caroline and the rest of the crew wanted a sixties based northern Soul club and expected people from all over Scotland. They still get that crowd but by basing the club in the west End they've attracted others. The Woodside Social club is situated in the student end of the city and has different clubs on each weekend. There's a reggae club, a couple of Indies Clubs, and an oldies club with live music. All have their enthusiasts whilst at the same time attracting a crowd out for a late night drink and a bop. They follow the particular etiquette of each club and appreciate they are in a ned free environment. At the Caley regulars make the dancing look easy and visitors copy the sideways shuffle. Other just dance the way they always would. There are no concessions to popular music choice although the club has developed its own favourites which haul people onto the floor. It can be a bit disconcerting for Guest DJ's when proven filler elsewhere just attracts those in the know whilst other records seem to unexpectedly fill the floor. Perhaps some market research could be done but as a regular I have noted people who arrived put of the blue have become regulars themselves. They might buy comp CD's but I doubt if they're buying vinyl. don't see them at Goodfoot so it's obviously the combination of the Caley and Woodies that works for them.
  3. I prefer the traditional style of Mary Fox on BBC Radio Stoke and Kev Roberts on Solar radio.
  4. There is a breed of London label collectors. I give my mate Opera Box sets I spot in junk shops and he feels obliged to get me stuff in return.o to keep it simple I used to tell him Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Stateside and London. So if you are ever looking to complete your Slim Whitman, Pat Boone collections you know who to contact.
  5. You're up against that high spending Dirty Dancing crowd so think again. https://www.popsike.com/php/detaildata.php?itemnr=2547983973
  6. Universal as it was a Warners Atlantic set. I bought a few promos and re issues whilst in London and Brighton this summer. The Dynells, Cajun Hart , Joe Tex, Linda Jones, Supremes . All about a fiver and being mint, perfect for radio play. FrankM
  7. I've got the two version somehwere. I played The Rance Allen Group at the Caledonia and Goodfoot. There's gonna be a Showdown was written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff for Archie Bell.It was released in 1969. Rance Allen and his brothers recorded it in the seventies. They got lost when Stax went bust and they returned to gospel
  8. What TV show does he present? If we're being nit picking?
  9. I always thought that "Heed The Baws" was a Scottish phrase. Is Tim Scottish or did he hang about with Keb Darge ? FrankM
  10. I realise he's a St.Johnstone fan but jumping on band wagons I am not so sure. He does a football prog on Radio Scotland twice a week which is quite fun, This week's guest was Frank McAvennie. https://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotlan...all/index.shtml FrankM
  11. From the BBC Radio 4 website
  12. That's because Denny Johnson picked his up in SA. I've got the CD version (and had the cassette) and you can buy it here https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...4694108-2135804 it was originally released as Otis Redding "Remember Me" and then retitled as "It's Not just sentimental" which is a line from "try a Little Tenderness" With seven tracks a side one might think the groove won't contain much volume but given Lovin' by the pound is track two you should by judicious use of the Gain and Bass pots get a decent sound to match a seven inch.
  13. as we say in Scotland when drinking a toast "Shang a Lang"
  14. They did of course record Keep on Dancing a version of which must have been played somewhere.
  15. A floor filler at the Caledonia a couple of months back and I've heard it at Goodfoot so it must be really popular. It must be the lyrics. I blame Tamla Motown Connoisseurs.

An excellent soul review with a tight six piece horn led band and a pocket dynamo as we say singing and sassying over the stage.
