  1. You can check Davie's choices here for soulfulness. Unfortunately the show is not in the archive. https://www.radiomagnetic.com/forum/viewtop...ht=davie+hudson However Davie very kindly sent me a seventies mix. Read the play list then listen to the show here. https://tinyurl.com/m4bep FrankM
  2. It depends on your definition of soul but the show is normally called "Reflections on Northern Soul" so i swapped "latin" for "northern". Just to retain a connection. Technically it should have been called "Reflections on Latin R&B" or "Reflections on Bugalu". Mind you there are some weeks on Reflections on northern Soul where you would have to search very carefully for the "soul" in some selections. Personally I think The Sandpipers Lonely too long is a great Pop record that could have been done by The Association or produced by Bones Howe. But for me the soul content is zero. Thanks for the comments everyone. I have been out recording live sets and I'm saving them for when Radiomagnetic relaunches. In the mean time I'll let you know when I've done another Reflections.
  3. Out of the blue and into the Groove. Radiomagnetic has moved but we're still refurbishing. In the meantime here's a special 100 minutes of Reflections on Latin Soul. Some of these tracks have been played at Northern Venues, others at Mod nights, and even some saw the needle in their groove at acid Jazz does but they are all dance tunes with roots in R&B and Latin. This is Bugalu with Ricardo Ray and Orchestra Harlow playing soul tunes, The Aztecs and King Curtis playing Latin and Tito Puente and Willie Bobo setting a path for Santana. Bob Valentin, Joe Bataan and Hector Riviera may be familiar names but catch some genuine rare grooves from The Moon People, Harvey Averne and The Latinaires. If you enjoy records with great rhythm tracks, swinging brass, handclapping and soulful chants with extra percussion on the top you'll love these records. Listen here https://wm9.easystream.co.uk/archive/Week_2...flectionshi.asf Normal Northern Soul service will be resumed shortly. https://www.radiomagnetic.com/archive/index...?genre=&show=65 FrankM
  4. The Beach Music scne would appear to me to be more of a dance scene with live bands still playing an important part. The DJ's seem to be interested in taking on modern blues and Soul tracks and remixing them or persuading the artists to re record them to make them more suitable for Beach Music plays. Here's this week's beach music chart you may recognise some names and even some titles but how may will be played near the beach at prestatyn next year. https://www.beachshag.com/ImagesSoundsResou...RnBchTop40.html
  5. There's listen again link here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/thinkingallowed/
  6. Stanton 500 carts were used by the more discerning DJ in the seventies. The even more discerning DJ used Shure M 44 E's. Setting up the deck properly helps. If the decks are hired out to Sccratch and Hip Hop DJ's you may need to do a bit of work on them. The clue is "Are the tone arm weights reversed?" if so look very carefully at the height of the tone arm and the angle of the stylus hitting the record. Check the Anti Skate. It should be set at the tracking weight of the Cart. If not you may find the tone arm just refuses to get to the end of the 7" record. Most Scratch/Hip Hop DJ's use 12" singles and very rarely play them all the way through to the end of the groove. If you're playing 7" singles use the Chunky Technics rubber mats that came with decks. Slip mats are for turntablists who manipulate records so unless you want to repeat the opening horn riff from Harlem Shuffle or the the loop the Beyonce blast from Are You My Woman use a rubber. It's safer and cuts down the risk of feedback. DJ Deft writes with some sense here https://www.dj.deft.ukgateway.net/mainpages/cartridges.htm
  7. I thought it was Little Feat in their session days who supplied the backing and I had presumed Lowell George played the lick.
  8. Here's some reading on what UK collection agencies do. BMI and ASCAP do not operate within the UK. They will have agreements with UK collection agencies or the song's/recording's owner will have a UK counterpart. https://www.bemuso.com/musicbiz/collectionsocieties.html
  9. She was in The Lenox Lounge in New York on 3/4th March. No idea where she's appearing next but she lives in New York.
  10. SHOWMEN LONDON 9481 IT WILL STAND / COUNTRY FOOL I heard Mikey Collins (Friday street) play the Minit original of this at The Oran Mor a week ago on Sunday and for once my alphabetically ordered singles threw up the above London single. It's a great double sider.
  11. It came from a beach music site. I was looking for a couple shagging but you try googling that. As you can see from the watermark superimposed on the photograph this is from the Supershag site.
  12. I can vouch for the quality and I'm sure the bastard who Knocked mine would too.
  13. Still listening to Trevor Nelson, are we? Radio 2 plays more soul than any other national station and there's always rare tracks as well as the hits on Sounds of the Sixties. https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/sounds60s/playlist.shtml

  15. There are soul Shows on Fridays between 7 and 10 on Saga in Glasgow(105.2) and the East(106.6) and West(105.7) Midlands. David Belcher does the Glasgow one and does slip in some northern soul. They are all on their local DAB multiplexes and your DAB radio might have a national SAGa slot. They are all available on line at https://www.saga.co.uk/radio/home/index.asp Saga is not on Freeview.

  17. I don't know why you're moaning you ain't got a hip hop DJ as a son who borrows your records and then uses them for scratching , beats and breaks. And leaves thumb prints, sticky paper and worse on them. Love and happiness in the Sixties. Lee Dorsey Working in a Coal Mine The Contours First I look at the Purse Jr. Walker Shotgun all cover topics beloved by today's rappers.
  18. possibly plus the cover by Martha Wash from a few years ago sent some people back to find the original. I play it at weddings and it goes down well. Then again like Cry To Me the interest might have been renewed by a version on a film soundtrack. Was Remember The Titans that big?
  19. Otis wrote and produced and had an honest manager. Jackie Wilson earned his money from live appearances and his manger had mob connections.
  20. He earned his money the smart way producing and writing songs which is of course where Womack got his money too. Performers don't normally get rich
  21. They're good too. That good some bastard stole mine. This style can be used with Styrene Avoid using the black T style as illustrated here
