  1. A mate of mine and I spent the day record shopping in Orlando. The stores didn't have much, but we got lucky and found a Craig's List posting where a former 60s/70s radio DJ was selling 1500 45s. Nothing rare in the soul department, but found some clean Motown and a slew of Beatles original picture sleeves I was able to trade for soul 45s. I pulled about 300 records out of the group.
  2. How about a CD comp of all of the Charger releases?
  3. I always include at least one Dobie Gray track, usually Out On The Floor, in one of my sets. Thanks for the great music you gave us, RIP.
  4. Just caught this performance from 2008 of Stop at the Richmond Folk Festival -- good stuff indeed!
  5. Sorry, that should have said Mickey Murray Saturday, 21 January.
  6. Hi Everyone, I just found out that Mickey Murray (yes, Shout Bamalama) will be playing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA on Saturday, 22 January as part of a record release party for the "People Are Together" LP reissue that will be coming out in January. https://www.thecedar.org/events/2012/01/21/mickey-murray As if that's not enough excitement, there will be a record fair the next day. Great start to 2012!
  7. Currently spinning the limited edition Howard Tate - The Complete Verve Sessions CD whilst on the computer. What a blinder of a release! Thank you so much for the music, Mr. Tate.
  8. What a bummer. "Half A Man" is an absolutely brilliant track. Just played it out in September.
  9. I had a chance to sample tracks from this release and was really impressed with the quality of the songs!
  10. Hi Everyone, I was organizing my desk over the weekend and found a couple of the Philco Hip-Pocket 45s released for a short time in the States. Were these released in the UK? If you haven't seen any of these before, I've put a photo of the front and back of the sleeve and the record itself. Enjoy! Tim
  11. I read through his feedback, and he's got a lot of negatives in the past, always followed by some excuse as to the reason for the issue.
  12. The soul scene ain't bad, it's fabulous! I stumbled into the soul scene by accident after purchasing a huge 45 collection with a ton (and I mean a ton, but the best bits are gone) of Northern Soul, funk, crossovers and the like, and I was hooked. I went to SoulTrip in Chicago for just a couple of days (we were going to the UK a week later, so $ was tighter), but had an absolutely incredible experience hanging out with Indiana Dave, Johnny Redpants, and the ultra-cool Barry Simpson from Australia. Had a chance to meet a bunch of other top people and have continued to soak in the knowledge that everyone has been so incredibly gracious to share. The soul 45 collection (and LPs) has continued to grow nicely during this time as well. I had a chance to play my first-ever soul set at SoulTrip Orlando 2011 and was hooked on DJing! The amount of amazing and lovely people I met in Orlando was incredible. Met up with Mr. Redpants, Indiana Dave, the lovely Chris L. and loads more. It's an amazing scene, and someday hope to do a little DJ set in the UK and catch a soul nighter or two. Cheers!
  13. Just watched the first part of this documentary. Absolutely excellent so far!
  14. Godzilla, Cheers. I was using Google and Discogs and a few other bits, but this one was proving difficult.
  15. Hi Everyone, I was digging through some soul records I bought from a store that got hit by Hurricane Katrina and found a Northern Soul 45 I can't find information on. It's 20th Century Fox Records 523 with What About Mine w/In This World. The label is faded enough that I can't see the artist, and searches online have not identified the artist. Any help would be great! Cheers.
  16. I'm still looking for a copy of Sweet Music on 45!
  17. Ah, the famous/infamous Les Harris out of San Antonio, Texas. He's been on The Bay for ages. Much to my surprise, he does get a lot of positive feedback, but I think it comes down to the fact he lists and sells so many records, which sort of "waters down" those negatives. I've never been tempted to buy his records, as I've heard stories of over-grading.
  18. My wife and I spent most of a morning and early part of the afternoon at Graceland. It's definitely worth checking out.
  19. If you like hamburgers, be sure to check out Dyer's Burgers. They have the best burgers and chicken fingers! https://www.dyersonbeale.com/
  20. We just had our first soul night in St. Paul for Twin Cities Soul last night. I'm still trying to take everything in and evaluate. We had some real pluses, but our big issue was a low turnout. I had regular postings on Facebook, an event page on Facebook, regular Tweets, flyered all around the area, had my co-promoter get some info out to the university just a couple of blocks up, sent press releases to radio and TV, etc. My co-promoter runs a sound and light company, so we had a top-notch sound system that sounded great. We also had a great set of Northern, 60s and 70s 45s. The problem we had was a much-lower turnout than anticipated. Mind you, I was thinking if we could bring 100 (the room holds 200), that that would be a good start. I would say we ended up with about 25 people throughout the night. We tried starting at 5PM and going until 10PM, and ended up things about 10:15PM. I do realize some of these events take years to build and everyone has probably had lower starts to their nights. Any thoughts or ideas most welcome. Just a piece of info that might be helpful. There are two soul nights in town already. One is playing Northern and 60s/70s, while the other night is playing funk and rare R&B. The Northern night has been going 9 years, while the other is celebrating 4 years. Cheers.
  21. Hey Everyone, I'm cleaning records for a bit this afternoon trying to find some new bits and found a copy of 'Ol Man River w/With These Hands from The Temptations. I gave both sides a chance but couldn't make my way through either track. It looks like this came out in 1967 and has a MTN-109 catalog number. Was this around the time of the Temptations on Broadway? I'll have to give this one a miss.
  22. I am doing the soul night with a co-promoter that has a sound and light company that will be mixing sound, etc. He has DJed before, so I'm sure I can count on him to mix in the next track if a bathroom break is needed. Since it's a brand-new night, we wanted to just keep it to us two because we don't know what turnout will be, plus we want to workout any bugs or glitches the first time out. I have reached out to a few local DJs that I'm going to ask to be part of our set. Our first night is this Sunday, and our next one is just 3 weeks later. I do have the Stars of Goldwax ACE EP coming in the mail from the west coast, so it should be here in time. The excitement level is building!
  23. I've been pulling records aside that I hear as first or second-hour records and am trying to save my better bits for the later part of the set.
