Hi fellas & ladies of course. Just picked up a cheap copy of this on UK 'Buddah'. Couldn't place it when I saw it, and that's the reason i bought it, curiosity. It's a lovely mid tempo tune and i would have thought it would go down well at a Northern do? Let me know what you think.

Unless you're using 'Technics 1200/10s' then you only need to wind the record back an inch, cos' they have instant start. Make sure you don't take the arm off the record that's playing Done that before today. Make sure you have the records on the right speed. Don't get upset if someone asks for a tune that you don't have and they say "What? You haven't got it?" just say to them, "I could only bring a few of my collection of 20,000 records, I'll bring it next time, sorry", and they'll apologise and fuck off. as above, play to the crowd, don't try to be a hero by trying to impress the other Djs by playing unknowns, it's the people that have paid to come in that you should be trying to impress. Welcome to the world of DJing -

VERY SIMPLE TIP! PLAY TO THE CROWD! -
Thank you for your comments and your agreeing that this is a stroke of pure genius. For some reason a few weeks ago it came into my head and I couldn't stop singing it, so I just had to have a copy. I already have it on a demo album 'Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' greatest hits, and I was hoping to play it out at the last event I DJ'd at, but it was too quieter recording, so I was on the search again, you know the one, when you HAVE to find it at all costs. There were quite a few on the bay in decent condition, but I wanted something more. So I carried on trawling the net until I found this demo copy. Couldn't see another demo anywhere else, so I thought that this was the one for me. I'm so pleased I found it and the condition is more than excellent. You can guarantee that it will get played at the next event I do

Heheh! yeah! and 'The Who', they're a rock band for gods sake!

Also a lesser known and brilliant track on 'Salsoul' was 'Salsoul Orchestra - Magic bird of fire' Magic bird of fire Check out this site for the full discography in pictures Salsoul in pictures Other top labels around the same time as Salsoul was big are Prelude Westend Sam All produced the more soulful style disco This being one of my favorites of all time on 'Westend' Shirley Lites and one by 'Five Special' called 'Why leave us alone' on 'Prelude'. Can't find a clip for this one but well worth tracking down.

And i suppose that we all know that it was sampled heavily in the 'Fat Boy Slim' track 'Funk Soul Brother'?

I know it's not rare, but some records just look beautiful, and this is one of them. I picked it up from the States for $2 and I think it's worth $100, not in value, just for the looks. And the tune is out of this world too. Stunning vocals stunning lyrics and stunning arrangement. Definitely one of my all time favorite Motown tracks. More Love

and isn't it beautiful?

Anyone mentioned 'The Detroit Spinners - What more could a boy ask for'? Spinners

I find it hard to understand how anyone who's into Northern, could NOT like this track. I think it is very close to epitome of the Northern Soul sound. I'd love to hear an instumental of it, has the backing been used in anything else? The best

Johnny Taylor - What About My Love - Beverley Glen
Northern Soul Uk replied to Bigsoulman's topic in Look At Your Box
Yes Billb, I think that one must def' be a re-press then, otherwise if they all came out at the same time, the label designs would be the same wouldn't you think? I'm very surprised the the 12" is worth £80 though, happy, but surprised. Well! £73 actually -

So maybe as i suspected, there was re-press after the 'Shapeshifters' track? with the labels being different on the two JT singles? Just as a matter of interest, when did you buy the last copy and which one is it? This is my copy of the 12" which looks more like the first of your pictures, colours etc. and on the 'B' side is 'Reaganomics' -

Johnny Taylor - What About My Love - Beverley Glen

As I said i will stand corrected, but there was definitely a surge of the 12" when the 'Shapeshifters' came out. It was definately sampled from the Johnny Taylor version, I know this for sure as I know one of the band personally, Shapeshifters that is. He found the Johnny Taylor record while he was looking through his girlfriends record collection. His girlfriend by the way, is called 'Lola', hence the name of the 'Shapeshifters' track. -

The track was originally an album track taken from the album 'Just ain't good enough' from 1984 Just aint good enough The 12" single seem to emerge after the record by 'The Shapeshifters' 'Lolas theme' heavily sampled it and reached number 1 in the UK charts in 2004. compare the 2 When i first heard the 'Shapeshifters' track I knew what the sample was taken from, and tried to find an original copy. I was informed by the 'Shapeshifters' record company 'Positiva', that it was an album track, and not available on 7" or 12". then within a month of the 'Shapeshifters' hitting the charts, the 12" single started to emerge, and the 7" single a few weeks after. There is one on sale now (12") on Discogs for £80, but on the description, is states that is is from 1984. I do not think that this is correct and am convinced that the 'Beverley Glen' release, was released after the 'Shapeshifters' success, to monopolise on sales. When I managed to get my 12" single, i got it for about £8 off Ebay Discogs I will stand corrected though if anyone has any more info. -
Yeah good one matey!!

Could write a manuscript on the subject, but best keep it short. Vinyl feel and aesthetics - Vinyl is better to work with and feels better to touch. Easier to find a vinyl in a record box by looking for a label or a sleeve, than having to search through every track on every cd. Tradition Proves that you a proper collector rather than someone who'd rather download and make Cds to cut costs. Keeps an air of originality and exclusivity about the scene and the collectors. Harder to find and gives you more of a buzz when you find the track you've been looking for for years. Anyone and his dog can download a cd or a bunch of MP3s, but only TRUE collectors opts for the vinyl option, and not just because they can afford it, but because it is the best format. I will save for months to buy that special record. Not right that a "DJ" can earn a wage when all they've done is sit at a computer downloading tracks to play. Rather than having collected vinyl for years, or at least made an effort to buy vinyl. In my opinion there should be 2 wage structures, more for a vinyl DJ, and less for a CD DJ. Vinyl vs CD sound Vinyl sounds better, warmer and more true to the original recording. CDs & MP3s sound too digital and can easily be recognised apart. MP3 is a compressed format, whereas to compress the file to small enough file to download, takes out the frequencies that it is said "you don't hear"? This is rubbish otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two when listening. My opinion anyway I'm sure you'll all agree LOL (NOT)

Ok ta, 50p well spent then LOL. So what would an original be worth then?

Hi fellow soulsters Does anyone know anything about a tune that I picked up at a car boot today? The track is by 'Lou Roberts & The Marks - Ten to one b/w Don't count on me. It is on a yellow 'Special products Division' label and states 'Special disc Jockey Record'. The matrix number is 'K-SP-104' It's not too bad to say I bought it on spec, quite blue eyed soul'y. It just looked nice Anyone any info at all please? Thank you

Help wanted! I have just remembered one of the best (in my opinion) Northern tunes ever, and I was wondering how hard it is to get hold of? Marke (Chris) Jackson - I'll never forget you' I know it was released on 'Jamie' records, but did it ever get copied or pressed up on any other label? I can't imagine being able to afford, let alone find an original copy, so a booty will do fine if there were any, and it's one of those that I have never had a copy of in the 30 odd years of collecting WHAT A STUNNING TRACK Thank you.

Hi peeps Just recieved this lovely 'Chess' demo copy of 'Love and brotherhood - Sugar pie honey' from the states. Just thought you might like to see it As I'm sure you'll know, it has the same backing track at 'Fuller brothers - Times a wasting' and 'Whispers - Remember me' If you didn't know, you do now

My view on this is sell your wife and kids first to make room and then the records come last LOL. I made the huge mistake of selling all my Disco 12s in the early 90s thinking that I would never play them again, and then what happens, a massive resurgence of Disco in the late 90s. Had to end up trying to get them all back cos I was getting offered gigs to play disco. have you thought about putting them into storage, or buying a secure shed to keep them in? You will get pennies from them from a dealer, you'll be very lucky to get 50p each mate believe me. Sad but true unfortunately.

Just picked up a couple of nice tunes for pennies. Have these been played out? cos if they haven't they should be, both belters. First one is a modern tune which to me is quite reminiscent of 'Sydney Barnes- standing on solid ground' It's by 'Ted Taylor' and it's called 'keeping my head above water' I picked it up for a song and it's on US MCA Demo, with Stereo/Mono versions from 1978. The second is 'Luthor Ingram - I can't stop/My honey and me' on 'KoKo' records which depicts 1969. A few I have seen are either saying 1970 or 1972, I am pretty sure this is an original press. Anyway, nice tunes and both deserve to be getting played.
