  1. Apperently 'Detroit executives - Cool off' was an ad' for some soft drink in the US, well that's what I heard years ago. Any truth?
  2. Yes me too, Thank you for the comments and I totally agree. I mean how the hell can you call 'Hawai five 0' Northern soul? and that used to pack the floors. There is NO true definition of Northern Soul apart from it's always dancable and ususally, but not always soulful. And what about Wayne fontana 'something keeps calling me back' and Paul Anka's 'Can't help loving you'? about as soulful as Ken Dodd, but still massive tunes on the scene.
  3. Hi everyone. Just thought you might like to check out the northern Soul profile on Myspace. Some nice tunes on there and some good videos. The url is Northern profile
  4. Hi Ian, just wondering, do you think that if they had have asked Paul Anka about his northern Soul records, he would have known what they were talking about? Does he know that some of his recordings were massive on the Northern scene? Many of the American artistes didn't have a clue that their otherwise dead records had been caned in the UK. I have heard many a story of artist coming over here to perform at Northern venues, and having to listen the tracks that they were going to perform before they went on stage, as they had forgotten the words, and were duely suprized that the audience that they were playing to knew the tracks word for word and in many cases, better than they did
  5. If you read my post more closely, I didn't say that the Gordon Gin theme WAS Northern soul or even Soul. I said that i liked it and did anyone know anything about it as they were on the subject of theme tunes. I also said it COULD have been passed off as a Northern tune had it been picked up by a top Northern jock and covered up, had it not been a well known commercial theme tune. It has the right pace and instumentation. What about Mike Post Coalition - Afternoon on the rhino? I'm sure that Mike post didn't go into a studio with the intentions of making a Northern Soul track, but it was picked up and played at the Casino and was massive, and still is. So what's the difference?
  6. Nice one Pete, thanks for the info.
  7. (ps) met my first 'squeeze. there too, that's when I realised that there was girls as well as Northern Soul . Denise Rush was her name from Harrogate, a real looker. She joined the Air force soon after, probably in an attemt to get as far away from me as fast as she could LOL
  8. Heheh! Yes you did imagine that Dave. The venue for 'The good old days' was held in the centre of Leeds at a theatre called 'The City varieties' and 'The Cats Whiskers' was some 6 miles away in the Meanwood area of Leeds. Thanks for the reply Steve
  9. Touch of velvet....., was played on the Northern soul scene, and the Gordons gin theme tune could have easily been passed of as a Northern track had it have been descovered by one of the top jocks back in the day, and if it had not been a theme tune for Gordons gin. Many tracks that are regarded as Northern bear little resemblence to the classic tracks that we all regard as Northern soul, especially some of the 'Blue eyed' soul tracks.
  10. Ian, does the time at 'Amnesia' in Leeds ring any balls (oops) bells, when you slipped down the ladder from the DJ stand LOL
  11. Staying with theme tunes, does anyone remember the AWESOME theme tune for 'Gordons Gin' that was played iat the cinemas in the 80s I think, BIG epic tune. i remember writing to 'Gordons' asking if they were gonna release it, and they wrote back saying there were no plans. Anyone have a sound clip, I'd love to here it again?
  12. Here's a good one, nothing really to do with Northern Soul, but it is a monster Soul record. I bought an original 7" acetate one sided promo of 'Jocelyn Brown - Somebody else's guy' from local shop. I was buzzing when I found it SOOOO RARE!! I only paid a few quid for it cos the guy in the shop thought it was a bootleg . I got it home and being an old acetate was quite crackly, so in my infinate wisdom, I decided to clean it up with record cleaner. Got it looking nice and shiny and popped it on the deck, and lo and behold, it sounded a million times worse! Couldn't do anything elese with it so after crying for an hour, i decided to frame it as a keepsake along with the original reaction report form from Island records from 1984 with the contact name of Adrian Sykes. This might interest Ian D as i think he had a stint with Island records at one time. Anyway, here's a piccy of the framed object.
  13. Was that Gary Fields Ian? last time I saw him was at the Kim Weston gig at the 'HiFi' club in Leeds last year. Top gig BTW.
  14. Was that Gary Fields Ian? last time I saw him was at the Kim Weston gig at the 'HiFi' club in Leeds last year. Top gig BTW.
  15. I bought an original copy of Mel Britt - She'll come running back froma guy at the Blackpool Mecca for £25, a lot in those days. I took it out to my car for safety's sake and left it on the rear parcel shelf in a paper bag that i found? WHY? yeah, you can guess the rest. The next day was probably the hottest day of the year and when I came back out it was totally warped. I literally cried. Never had an original copy since.
  16. Just bought a copy of 'Candy and the kisses - The 81' on U.S. Cameo, off EBay for £1.50. A bit rough round the edges, but plays well, and for £1.50 can't go wrong. CLASSIC!!!
  17. Martyn Ellis would be a good choice too from the 'Torch' Definately had the perfect face for radio :-), but what a character.
  18. Yowsa! Did anyone on here ever go to 'The Cats Whiskers' in Meanwood, Leeds back in the 70s/80s. They used to hold all dayers there on a Sunday. Good club and great people.
  19. Yes you may be right there, I was always led to believe that he started out at the 'Spinning disc', I know for a fact though, that he was the first ever DJ to request a mixer so that he didn't have to pause inbetween each record. Wasn't known as a mixer then of course, but it hailed the birth of the mixing DJ. WHAT A MAN!!!
  20. I'm 53 and still on it, does that come close? GOD NO!, I've just seen the ages above and I feel a mere whipper snapper now! Wahayyyy!!!!
  21. When I first started going clubbing, it was at a club in Leeds called 'The spinning disc' or the 'Old mecca' as it was known. It's where Jimmy Saville started out. They used to play Motown in the 60s, and the biggest tune that stands out for me was 'Behind a painted smile - Isley brothers', still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I hear it.
  22. can't get away from this place, more addictive than fags
  23. And it got re-released in 2005-6 on a triple pack ep by the great man calle 'The suemi sessions'. Top EP and quality press.
