  1. Hi y'all, I was there on the night DJing with Ian, Lucy and Alex, and i can say 'That Kid Is Good'. Alex is a breath of fresh air, although the tunes that he played were mostly oldies I feel that he could have more than confortably played the newer stuff too had it have been right for the event or the time of set that he played. I think that DJs young or old(er), should play what they prefer to play, and even more importantly, what's right for the crowd on the night (the sign of a good DJ). Alex is 16 and although he is now good, if he get's the chance to prove himself, could be brilliant. Alex really does remind me of when I was a young 'n', Hungry, willing to learn and listen, and desperate to be a Northern Soul DJ. and I can catagoricaly say that if you try hard enough, keep at it, and have the passion, that i think Alex has, you will get what you want. hang on in there Alex, MUCH bigger things are afoot.
  2. Heheh!, just recieved the record and I am not suprised it's so good. Look at who penned the 'A' side, Bobby Womack. He's a genius, and the 'A' side is the far superior track too. Get on it while it's cheap you modern lovers, my tip to be a biggie of the future.
  3. Thank you very much for the info, any more would greatly be appreciated. has anyone heard the track? this is a really nice funky Northern tune and could easily cross over to the northern scene. I'm suprised that no one has played it yet to be honest, I have heard much worse at Northern nights. I think it is remenicent of was it 'The Ikettes - Two timing double dealing'? but better, great orchestral arrangement and fab vocals too. As I said in my original post it is very Meccaesque and really could see it being big ion the modern scene.
  4. Hiya folks. just purchased this on Ebay for a measly $6 (£3ish), I listened to the soundclip and thought it was excellent, both sides are great. Does anyone on here have any info or history on the track, it sounds very Meccaesque. Thank you for any info submitted. Steve
  5. Here's a few that would possibly fit into the 'Dirty Northern' catagory; Gene Chandler - There was a time Detroit Executives - Cool off 8th avenue band - The whole thing Lou Pride - I'm coming home in the morning Carl Douglas - Crazy feeling Tony Hester - Down in the dumps Hope you agree
  6. Nope none on there, Ah well, just have to wait then, I remember now that it came out on United Artists if i'm correct, I had it originally back in the day but no longer. What's it worth then anyone? about £20ish?
  7. Jesus yes, what a plonker, haven't heard it for so long, and i thought I remembered it being a lot more modern than that. Ah well, Ebay here I come. :-)
  8. Hi Fellahs, can someone please tell me what the first tune on this video is please. i remember it being played back in the day but can't remember what it was or who it was by. I know i can depend on the folks of Soul Source to remind me. Thank you you in anticipation. https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1kHqvOUY8OI&...feature=related Oh and by the way, don't forget the Northern Soul and Soul night at the 'Irish centre' York Road in Leeds on the 29th of August with myself and Ian Dewhirst attacking the decks. :-)
  9. Yeah, went to a record fair today and got speaking to a guy with a stall. said he'd had a copy a few weeks ago and sold it for £150. Think i might stick with the booty, a bit rich for me that.
  10. Hi everyone I have just come across a track by 'Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' called 'Easily pursuaded' I know it came out on an album called 'Return of the soul sisters' but did it aver see the light of day as a single? and if so, what label was it on and would it cost much? Thanks for any help. Steve
  11. Wow! it did do a lot better than I thought then. Does anyone know if it was played out anywhere in the 70s-80s,? I remember buyin the album cos it had that track on it after I'd heard it somewhere.
  12. Does anyone on here know of a Dionne Warwick track from the album, 'Track of the cat' called 'Once you hit the road'? I recommend that you have a listen if not, it is an amazing modern soul mid tempo dancer. I don't think it ever made it as a single. it should have done really. I think it is on the Warner brothers label without digging it out to have a look. Let me know what you think and if you've heard it or not. I have a sneaky feeling that it was played at the Mecca once or twice. This has the potential of being a monster modern track.
  13. Really sorry about this, but while we're on the subject Kylie Minogue - Time will pass you by WARNING!!! If you love the Tobi Legend version and hate top quality Northern tunes being killed to death, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!!! https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=t4kM3Q_qoS0 I know you will though LOL
  14. Hi Ian, it's the 29th btw :-) and i'm looking forward to it too mate, should be a bubble. I'm glad that you're gonna be playing the more modern stuff, that means that i will be able to concentrate on the older stuff, much of which I prefer to be honest. Not that I don't like the modern stuff too, obviously I do cos I buy it. I thought I was right about you licencing the salsoul stuff. There are loads of top class salsoul tracks, but apart from 'Janice', one of my other faves is 'Magic bird of fire' by 'The salsoul orch' Awesome track and I believe it is based on a classical track is it not? A record that I think should be played at Northern gigs is 'Why leave us alone by '5 special' What a tune, I remember this from the early days of the Leeds Warehouse and it has never left me. Also 'Shirley Lites' 'Heat you up' A huge disco stomper, would go down well on the modern floors. Respect Ian and see you on the 29th LOL Oh and btw, I have put the Promo 12" above on the Bay if anyone is interested. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=021
  15. I HAVE JUST PUT MY COPY OF THE AMAZING MODERN NORTHERN TRACK 'JANICE' BY ' SKIP MAHONEY' ON EBAY. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL UK LABEL PROMO ON 'UNDERWORLD' RECORDS (12UNDY1), IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, READ THE DESCRIPTION. A RARE FIND ON PROMO. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=021
  16. Ah! now I see what the Soulvation depicts. Was permission actually given by 'Salsoul' to press these up then? it say's under licence from 'Suss'd' on the label, who are Suss'd? I may be wrong and correct me if I am, but didn't Ian Dewhirst get copyright to the Salsoul stuff for the mastercuts series? I think I heard that somewhere on the grapevine. If Ian reads this post I'm sure he'll put us right.
  17. Here is my other copy of janice, I think this is a re-release, got it off Ebay about a year ago for a tenner. Looks nice though and obviously plays perfectly. It is a one sided demo (other side is blank), can anyone shed any light on this release?
  18. Yes I also have the Love commitee 12" single on the original US label 'Gold Mind' which I have a feeling is one of the subsiduary labels of salsoul. May be wrong, anyone know? Also have to agree that is is also an excellent modern track in it's own right. Anyone any ideas of the worth of the 'Janice' promo yet? a bit worried cos it cost me a quid and I want to know if I've been ripped or not . LOL. Oh and I've just checked, 'Gold Mind' is a subsiduary label of Salsoul, no wonder it's so good
  19. Do you mean on the Underworld label or the Salsoul soulvation label?
  20. The copy I use (not this one) is on the 'salsoul Soulvation' label on a demo 7", and I know it came out on 'Salsoul' in the states. Never seen a promo of this, although after a more in depth search, there is a normal copy on this label on Ebay at a starting price of £25, weather he get's any bids at that price remains to be seen .
  21. Hi everyone. I have just come across an excellent quality copy of Skip Mahoney's, Janice. It is on a white label 12" single on 'Underworld records' matrix number '12 UNDY 1'. I have done a search and can't find anything about this label at all and definately no mention anywhere of this record being released on it. Does anyone have any info at all and if possible it's worth? I know it's a 12" but I think it is quite obscure.
  22. Thank you all for your comments, I will let you all know what it's like when i receive it. You're all superstars. Just to let you know that the 'B' side is 'malibu', is it a boot then? See you at Drax tomorrow night if you can make it.
  23. Hi fellahs, just got this on EBay for £11, took a chance really but it's a top tune anyway. Any notions on weather it's an original promo or not? Thanks in anticipation. Steve
  24. 'Mike Post Coalition - Afternoon on the Rhino'. This track has always baffled me. Why would someone take a huge orchestra into a studio to record a random track that was not a theme tune for any film or program that I am aware of, but just for the sake of it. Can you imagine being in the studio when the track was recorded? WOW! The track is so full of energy from start to finish. And what type of music is it? It wasn't made as a Northern Soul record as the term was little known when it was made, so why was it recorded and to what end, it can't have made much money on the commercial scene? All hail Mike Post. what was he thinking? Does anyone know the reason for this amazing record to have been recorded?
  25. Hi and thanks. I know for a fact that this IS the original press, it is on 'Motown natural resources', the re-press is on 'Motown' which was re-released some years after this release. Natural Resources was active in 1972 and 1973, then used again in 1976 for a Gaylord and Holiday album, then used again in 1978 and 1979 for reissues and compilation albums. The Natural Resources label is white with brown printing. "NATURAL RESOURCES" above the center hole on two lines. On the perimeter is the slogan "Natural Sounds For Natural People" in script.
