  1. Yeah me too, not cracked but the seller said in the description that it was VG+ condition, when I recieved it, it sounded like it had been recorded in a fish shop at 5pm.
  2. Just played the 'B' side of the 'Three caps', 'Hello stranger', What a nice tune, good mid tempo soul. next question, The Capitols AKA The three caps, why? tax dodge? career re-launch? anyone?
  3. yes, that's the same sleeve as mine's in, but mine is not a demo as you see by the label. Here is the soundclip that i said I'd upload, thought it sounded different to the original release, but on playing it on a decent system I'm not too sure now. Millie jackson - My man a sweet man Not sure which to keep now, or should I keep them both?
  4. Similar story to the above that I heard. That the holes were drilled to tie them so that they'd stay together on the transport over here. Thought that for years.
  5. Found this also; Millie Jackson is an R&B/Soul music singer/songwriter. Her vocal performances are distinguished by long, humorous, and explicit spoken sections in her music; She has also recorded many disco songs, some dance music songs, and a few country styled songs. She is the mother of R&B singer Keisha Jackson. Early life Millie Jackson was born in Thomson, Georgia, on 15 July 1944; she was the daughter of a sharecropper. Her mother died while Jackson was still a child, and subsequently she and her father moved to Newark, New Jersey. By the time she was in her mid-teens, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, and lived with an aunt. She occasionally worked as a model for magazines like Jive and Sepia. Career Her career is said to have begun on a dare to enter a 1964 Harlem nightclub talent contest, which she won. Her voice is frequently compared to that of her inspiration, Gladys Knight. Though she first recorded for MGM records, she soon left and began her long association with Spring Records. Her first single to chart was 1971's deceptively titled "A Child of God (It's Hard to Believe)," which reached number 22 on the R&B charts. In 1972, Jackson had her first R&B Top Ten single with "Ask Me What You Want", which also reached the pop charts, which was followed up by "My Man, A Sweet Man" which reached #7 R&B. The following year she had her third Top Ten single and biggest hit with "Hurts So Good," which made # 3 on the R&B charts and #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. The single was featured in the blaxploitation film Cleopatra Jones. In 1974 she released the album Caught Up, which introduced her unique and innovative rap style of racy, raunchy language. The featured release was "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right", for which she received two Grammy nominations. On that album, the follow-up Still Caught Up, and others, she was backed by the renowned Muscle Shoals rhythm section. Over the next ten years, Jackson had a string of successful albums and numerous R&B Top 100 singles on the Top Black Singles chart for Spring Records, the biggest being her 1977 version of Merle Haggard's country hit "If You're Not Back In Love By Monday". That hit single was followed by many more, including her version of the Boney M song, the Disco single, "Never Change Lovers In The Middle of The Night." This single peaked at #33 on the Top Black Singles chart in 1979. In 1986, she signed with Jive Records and had further Top Ten hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart with "Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love" and "Love Is a Dangerous Game." Jackson also formed and produced the group Facts of Life, who had one hit in 1977. In 1991, she wrote, produced and starred in the successful touring play Young Man, Older Woman, based on her album of the same title. In 2000 her voice featured in "Am I Wrong" by Etienne de Crcy, sampled from her performance in "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right". Jackson may be most famous in the internet age for her album covers, which frequently appear on "worst ever" lists. E.S.P. (Extra Sexual Persuasion) features Jackson peering into a crystal ball that accentuates her cleavage; Back to the Shit depicts Jackson on a toilet, straining to (presumably) defecate. Jackson now runs her own record label, Weird Wreckuds. After a lengthy hiatus from recording, she released her fifteenth album, Not For Church Folk in 2002, which marked a return to her "tell it like it is" lyrical style and Urban contemporary sound. The album features the hit singles "Butt-A-Cize" (a dance song) and "Leave Me Alone" (a ballad). The album also features a collaboration with rapper Da Brat on the edgy song "In My Life." For the past several years Jackson has had her own radio show in Dallas, Texas. Broadcasting via remote from her home in Atlanta, Jackson can be found working in afternoon drive time from 3-6 pm on KKDA 730 AM. In 2007, 1977 album Feelin' Bitchy was reissued with positive reviews.
  6. Just found this on Wikipedia; "My Boy Lollipop" is a song written in the mid-1950s by Morris Levy (under the pseudonym "Robert Spencer") and Johnny Roberts. It was originally recorded by the American singer Barbie Gaye and became a minor Rhythm & Blues hit in late 1956, spelled "My Boy Lollypop" (with a y") on the original 78 record label. It is most famous, however, for the 1964 recording by Jamaican singer Millie Small which is considered the first international ska hit. The Millie Small version The song was discovered by Chris Blackwell, who was trying to find songs for Millie Small to record. Millie's version was recorded in a ska/bluebeat-style, and became her breakthrough blockbuster hit in Britain, reaching #2. It also went to #1 in Ireland and #2 in America. "My Boy Lollipop" was the first record to help Blackwell's Jamaican label, Island Records, make millions. With over seven million copies sold, it remains one of the best-selling reggae/ska hits. Respect to all who informed me of the truth behind the rumour, now I can go and kick his ass!
  7. I was speaking to a guy at a record fair that i went to in Leeds today, and we got talking about Millie Jackson. He swore that she was also known as 'Millie' the one that recorded 'My boy lollipop' and she changed her name to Millie Jackson. How true is this, does anyone know? Before you ask I got 3 choonz at the fair. The three caps - Cool jerk on UK Atlantic (are 'The three caps' the same as 'The capitols'? the record sounds just the same as their version). Soul brothers six - Check yourself/Some kind of wonderful - UK Atlantic The mood mosiac - A touch of velvet.......... on UK Columbia. All for a tenner. Not too shabby.
  8. Again as all have already said, he will be sadly missed. He was resposible for many of the records that we have taken for granted over the many years that we have lived and breathed Northern Soul. A true musical genius. Our condolences go out to all of his friends and family. May he rest in peace.
  9. No I don't mind you asking at all. I was led astray back in the 80s and started to DJ House etc of which I must admit I made quite a name for myself as a House DJ. I was quite disillusioned with the Northern scene by that time mainly because it had gone quite commercial with the likes of 'Wayne Gibson, Chosen few etc. gettting into the national charts. So in order to fund the music I was playing at the time I sold my Northern collection. Of course Northern runs through my blood and as with so many people, I decided again that I loved it more than anything and needed to start collecting it again. This decision was made after accidently finding a northern site on the net called 'Night owl', I looked around it and found a sound clip of 'Darrell Banks - Open the door.....' and when it played it literally brought tears to my eyes, and that was that, I was back into it. In the space of 4 years or so, I have now got most of the records back that I had before, and there are just a few that I need to complete my original collection. Here are the ones I have re-collected and there are still a few to add that I have recently purchased. 10. Yeah that'll have been where I heard it first then, used to go to both the Torch and VaVas. heard it lately on a double cd that I got called 'soul allnighter', great CD full of classics.
  11. Just had a quick search and found this info. Millie jackson my man a sweet man (1989 german 7" vinyl single) also featuring i gotta get away picture sleeve sews702. South Bound So there ya go, Released in Germany in 1989. Must be a re-release then. Still a nice label though
  12. Hi again. Just bought a tune on Ebay for the equivelant of £13 including postage from the States. Can anyone please let me know if is a good by for what I paid, or goodbye to £13 The record is by 'The Toys' and the title is 'I got my heart set on you', It is on 'Musicor' records and is a US import in Mint condition. I believe that the record is an old Wigan sound, think I heard it there. Any help appreciated. Thank you peeps.
  13. I had a similar experience recently. I bought a record from the US which stated 'Free postage to the UK', when the auction was over, the seller wrote to me and said that it was a mistake in the listing and could I pay $6 for the postage? I wrote back and stated the the Free postage was one of the reasons that I bought the record and that they could have edited the postage cost if it was a mistake. I also threatened to report them to Ebay for misrepresentation. The seller apologised and sent the record free of charge. If you have paid via Paypal, you are covered for up to £500 I think, so you need to file a 'Not recieved item' claim on Ebay, they will send Emails to the seller, they have I think it is 3 weeks to reply to Ebay or settle the claim and if you have no joy after that, you will be refunded via Paypal. Even if you did not pay by Paypal, you still need to file a claim on Ebay.
  14. Doesn't say anything on the 'Spring' release about 'Ace' records. at the bottom above the address it says '1972 Polydor incorperated'
  15. Just listened to it and it sounds different, as though it has been re-mastered or something? The strings have been brought up higher and the beat etc. has been lowered. the vocals are the same so not re-sung. Still sounds great though, not spoilt or anything. just different. maybe I'll try to put a clip up so you can hear?
  16. I recently bought a copy of 'Millie Jackson - My man a sweet man' on 'Spring' records (import). I was very fortunate, as the very kind seller sent me 2 copies, the auction was for 1 copy, BONUS!! The copy I bid for was as mentioned above on the usual 'Spring' label, but the second copy is on a label called 'South bound'? has anyone seen one of these before? Thanks
  17. I have now recieved the track from the seller. On the 'B' side is the same version but just the song. The 'A' side is the talking part (Rap) and fades just before the she starts singing. Really nice, and came in the original 'TK' Productions' sleeve too which 'Alston' is a subsiduary label of.
  18. Yes Malc, thay are only human like us. but I wish I was responsible for making a tune that helped to change peoples lives. What a Buzz!!
  19. Tried HBOS, and they said that if the record was 'House' they might have been able to help, Boom Boom!!!
  20. What, 10 gallon?
  21. Linda Jones - Just can't live my life Why can't I get a copy of this for under £30, I remember when they were 10 a penny on the UK release. It's a vital record to have in any collection and I want one in mine (again). Used to have it years ago and I still think it is the epitome of Northern Soul.
  22. No doubt at all, this is one of the finest albums ever produced, I still listen to it regularly even after owning it for over 20 years. Go out and buy it now! no now! NOW I SAID! Well! what yer waiting for?
  23. what a supurb track, the more i hear it the more I love it. I'm definately toying with the idea of playing it at my next gig in Leeds, a little downtempo yes, but still quite danceble and I think the crowd will love it all the same. Soul music at it's finest!
  24. Wow! thought this would be a good thread. This is facinating stuff and very thought provoking. I'll bet that most of the artists aren't even aware that some of their recordings are popular in the UK, and now worldwide, and that some of the records are worth Hundreds and sometimes thousands of £. It's a shame that they can't see the fruit of their work. Wouldn't it be amazing to round up the ones that are alive and/or fit enough, and have a massive weekender or even weeker and have them all performing the tunes that we know and love? That would be the concert to end all concerts. I'd love just to see their faces when they saw the reaction of the crowds dancing and singing along to the tunes word for word. How amazing would that be? Last year I went to see the amazing Kim Weston in Leeds performing an intimate concert. She was amazing. Even after her near death experience of being thrown into the air 20ft after being hit by a car, and the hospital having to literally sew her back together, she still put on a stunning performance. The poor girl tried her upmost to hit the high notes that she could in her younger days, and the crowd really appreciated it. Amazing that at over 70 years old, she still has the gumption and the bottle to get up and do her thing. NOW THAT'S PROFESSIONALISM. Amazing!!! Steve.
  25. yeah there's one like that in Leeds 'TYT1S' LOL
