  1. What a stunning night. Must have been real close to you Soulfinger - your daughter was great. there's a vid of her on the Stax Academy Facebook page. And Reforee - where you're going you won't need seats!! Seriously folks, this is not to be missed. And the concerts in Hitchin and Bristol are FREE if you can still get a ticket.
  2. "the king of Lincoln"!! Gordon Rath on the RSG Otis Redding Special
  3. My friend Paulene and I made a massive tin chicken in art class at school as a tribute, out of wire and tin lids. Wasn't Stringfellow reknowned for an eclectic taste in cars - like an old Rolls or a London taxi.
  4. Gordon Rath (Raffy) still lives in Lincoln. The Lincoln soul scene is still going strong. There are some great pics of the Lincoln crowd on https://www.facebook.com/groups/DukeLincolnLads60s/?ref=bookmarks and the story of how the Lincoln Mojo and Wheel gang set up the Duke of Wellingon Soul Club here
  5. The next ad will be me and my daughter going to a Bowlers reunion night. I will be wearing my dungaree shorts and doc marten boots. Whistles, glowsticks and Hi viz jackets optional.
  6. A few years back a new nightclub opened locally so I went to see them about playing there. The guy who did the booking was their regular DJ and (rather reluctantly it seemed) said I could do a couple of hours one Saturday. When I got there it was all set up for computer playing but I wanted to do it off CDs. A lot of my daughter's friends were there so I knew exactly which tunes would get them going so I chucked the lot in - anything from James Brown to K-Klass. The whole place was jumping. Several people (that I didn't know) told me it was the best night they'd had there but regular guy didn't seem too happy. Result was that, despite being asked by customers, he never asked me to play there again! I can't think why!!!
  7. Emperor Rosko - that's triggered off a memory of a school dance in 1969 (yeah I know - but we organised them and used to get great soul bands on and play our records in between; they were legendary!) Hitched afterwards to Tony's cafe on the A1; home in the morning and listening to Rosko; stand out tune from that day was Robert John 'If you don't want my love' . . . there was a lot of tidying and hoovering done. Can't think where the energy came from!!
  8. Some were in a studio in London doing pre-recorded shows. I started listening to Lux in 1950's - you could only get a signal in the evening. I was lucky as we had a proper valve radio, which I carried on using into the 60's (for pirate radio London.) In the holidays we were able to stay up late to listen as my cousin was 7 years older than me. She introduced me to rock&roll and R&B at the tender age of 5.
  9. His name was Neil Blanchard and he used to DJ at the Duke (with Steve Carter). He still lives in Lincoln. We have had a few Duke reunions, which I got to DJ at (at last!). Other Leicester names I can remember are Martin Matlock, John Barnes and Sugar. Have got some good pictures from Lincoln.
  10. I had a habit of writing random tunes that I liked at the top of my diary - sort of tune of the day. Some were older at the time and some current. 11. Hi John - did you ever hang around with Little Roy, Keiron, Brian Proud and Tony ? - who all lived up on SFE in Leicester? I used to go out with Brian and they all used to come over to Lincoln to the Duke of Wellington. I used to go to the Dungeon and the Beachcomber too. Still go to the Twisted Wheel as I now live over in Chester. Kath Chambers
  12. I saw Stevie Wonder at the Gliderdrome - will have to check the year but the Starlight Room didn't open until 1964 so it was after that.
  13. Looking for a love - The Olympics! . . . looking for a housekeeper actually but Lonely Hearts ad was cheaper than a job opening!!
  14. Now just wait for someone to come on here and tell you what an overplayed tune it is. Bit like Jackie Wilson currently on one of those annoying sofa adverts!!
