Racism at NS venues; did/does it happen
Rhino replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
This is now going way to deep for my liking some say they have but on the whole it doesn't seem to be an issue at all with the scene. To segregate every colour,country,north/south divide to counties is taking it to the extreme in my honest opinion. apart from a few instances over 40+ years we should be proud of it and look at it as a positive. This is just my humble opinion and think its great to of been part of something which hasn't been tarnished by race/colour or any other discrimination. -

after reading it again and his comment " Now black people have moved on from soul to dubstep and hip-hop. I think white and black musical youth are almost a generation apart.” with promoting rave events for years never once have any racist incidents but yet again he was there!!! he is just trying to be controversial as he is using the music scene to supplement his shite acting career -

never heard of any racism at any all nighters i knew a couple of black lads vernon and smokey and they wouldn't of taken that off anyone. Craig charles must have been on his crack pipe again. the bloke is a joke cant ever remember him at any soul events. its a bit ironic really 100s of people travelling round the country listening and dancing to mostly black american soul music.its total insult to the people how are and have been on the scene some of which have been for 40 years and more. -
chapter 5 - you cant mean it .. not bad from a guy from barrow cumbria

loved 80s and 90s the gulf between the 60s newies crowd against the oldies/modern crowds. so many great venues allerton and the scotish djs were great colin lawes. blackburn for the desire to keep the scene moving forward. keele was good early days to great times, great friends and not forgetting the tunes that turned up in them days

Gone way off the thread abut here interesting though it is may be start a thread on scene in the 80/90s

agree with you about no one in security have a incident free life but its how kev/goldsoul has handled this situation came out calling him an attention seeker yep in his hindsight he could of told security but he felt he and his wife had to leave venue to the possible idiot still outside waiting. as he said there must of been 30 years between them and felt intimidated. The way goldsoul has always trying to turn it around instead of taking it as a unforeseen incident and promise to look into improving security on dance floor area. in essence as a promoter he has different values to you and mick and is his full time income(radio/promoter/etc) and thats the difference between oldies events to smaller venues better run and isnt NORTHERN SOUL / MOTOWN its rare soul and under played music . Been interesting and eye opening thread but ive said me piece take care bud
-
the comment mick made was" if I had 10 men doing security for me I Would be asking questions how they missed that incident" also "Of course it's the promoters fault the buck stops with the promoter who else can you blame.Im a promoter and have done promotions security wise over the last 50 years you can't start blaming the cleaners take it on the chin and tidy things up". i think you misunderstood him what mick was getting at had the pleasure of working along side mick for years and learned more of him and his security team and that standard was tight but polite, if that had of happen with micks team whoever missed it wouldnt work again
-
sorry chalky disagree with you the guy felt threatened about leaving the venue and looked after his wife and himself this his the way he wanted to deal with it. i hope kev/goldsoul take this on board that there is issues and his 10 strong security to be more vigilant. ive been involved in promoting and its either a poor security firm or cause its a soul event thats not had much trouble previously security has let the guard down and let kev/goldsoul down as mick pointed out

That's a probably the best point made in this discussion.

i would of thought if you had come on here and asked him to pm you with what happen and you could look into it and say u would do your best to try and keep his sort out, you could of got a lot of praise for being a concerned promoter not saying your not. Its happening at a lot of venues not just yours. its could of been a plus for you.

Rest my case.

This is a soul forum for like minded soul people to converse about our experiences. He experienced an incident at your event and shared it with his fellow members of soul source not golden 101 forum. rough with the smooth happy to take the pats on the back but sulk when someone complains the joy of promoting. as for calling someones opinion being an insult you need to get a grip sounding like a person how no longer allowed on the forum.

Rhino I'm sorry I disagree,a scene should have been caused & if that spoils peoples night's that's an unfortunate side effect of showing people that nutting someone on a dancefloor won't be tolerated & there will be consequence if you act in that way. As for the venue policing such an incident do you want bouncers criss-crossing the dancefloor all night just because of one idiot? Cheers Martyn it doesn't take doormen criss-crossing dancefloor a decent doorman would be able to stand on the balcony and instruct co-worker which idiots were causing issues take them in a control way. worked in clubs soul/rave/pisspots for years and soon weeded out the knob heads without spoiling anyone's night. its public safety and really should be able to spot them at the door as they coming in either turn them away (best option) or monitor them inside. fight on dance floors spill over and involves more people and makes it a big thing but could of been nipped in the bud if police properly. Also if doorstaff deal with it they wont get in to venue again regards rhino

would love to know what promoter has to say about such matters and if he is doing anything in future to stop this occurrence becoming a trend at the worlds no.1 soul allnighter . fair play for keeping your cool lots of others wouldn't and could of caused a major scene spoiling the night for others.

Unissued Jimmy Ruffin Tracks...60,s Help Solve A Mystery Please
Rhino replied to Gasher's topic in All About the SOUL
Details Number of CDs: 1 Recording Type: Studio Recording Mode: Stereo EAN: 0602498120064 Album Notes It might be titled "The Ultimate Motown Collection," and certainly it's the most comprehensive Jimmy Ruffin CD compilation to hit the market, with two discs and 48 tracks, a dozen of them previously unreleased. It still doesn't have everything he did for the label, and the absence of no less than four of the 11 tracks that appeared on the best previous Ruffin CD comp (20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Jimmy Ruffin) testifies to the variance of taste among those responsible for assembling these anthologies. Still, it'll satisfy both those looking for an overall Ruffin best-of and Motown collectors who want more depth and a higher concentration of rarities, though the 20th Century Masters comp is still the recommended first choice, especially if you're on a budget. Of course, Ruffin's only Top 20 pop hits, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" and the less celebrated "I've Passed This Way Before," are both here, as are his three 1970 U.K. Top Ten chart entries "Farewell Is a Lonely Sound," "It's Wonderful to Be Loved You," and "I'll Say Forever My Love."Disc one has 26 tracks taken from his 1967-1974 albums, using the "45 Mix" versions of 11 cuts (including all of the aforementioned hits) and ten songs from his U.K.-only LPs Jimmy Ruffin...Forever (1970) and I've Passed This Way Before (1974, though the material on it that hadn't been previously issued was taken from the vaults). Decent as these are, taken together they do confirm Ruffin's standing as one of Motown's second-stringers, probably doomed to relative obscurity if not for the huge success of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." They do show Ruffin's skill with some of Motown's more pop-oriented material -- he was certainly not as gritty as, say, fellow Motowner Edwin Starr -- and in its way, the disc is a reflection of the label's overall drift toward more sophisticated, slicker production in the late '60s and early '70s, though there aren't too many really outstanding songs (and listeners certainly don't need to hear his covers of "Take a Letter Maria" and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head").The real excitement for Motown fanatics lies in disc two, comprised of ten previously released "rarities" and a dozen previously unheard "unreleased masters." Among these are Ruffin's extremely Jackie Wilson-influenced debut Motown 1961 single, "Don't Feel Sorry for Me"/"Heart"; an Italian version of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"; a bunch of obscurities that have only shown up on Motown and soul compilations, some of them rather out of the way; and those dozen unreleased sides (one of them an alternative mix of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" with a spoken intro), spanning 1962-1971. These rare and unissued items aren't of such a high quality that you'll pound your head in frustration over their failure to gain official release at the time they were recorded. But they're solid enough mid-level vintage Motown music in a variety of uptempo and midtempo (and, less often, ballad) styles, often written by leading Motown composers like Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong, Janie Bradford, Mickey Stevenson, and Eddie Holland, though at times they bear a strong similarity to better-known Motown hits, as "Lucky Lucky Me" does to Marvin Gaye's "Pride and Joy." Though disc two is primarily of interest to Motown collectors, it shouldn't be dismissed as subpar, standing up pretty well with the body of work Ruffin did issue while he was with the label. ~ Richie Unterberger Disc: 1 1. What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted 2. Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got 3. I've Passed This Way Before 4. Tomorrow's Tears 5. It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You) 6. I'll Say Forever My Love 7.
