You sulk never ! I am not dismissing them , I would never tell anyone to stop doing anything , my point is it's a matter of choice for all individuals , we are not sheep than can be herded. And who is the shepherd ? I would like to hear sound breakers at soul nights ..why restrict them to allnighters ? I would also like to hear the underplayed at soul nights ( it doesn't have to be rare ) and I do beleive we are getting there . I am so lucky in where I live I think the Manchester soul club scene is so vibrant and exciting at the moment. It's the best of times embracing the whole bag of old new and underplayed. They are pretty hot over them there hills too BTW ....Why can't butch or others like him play at a soul night ? We appear to impose so many restrictions in our souling today ?

I can't help but think that some of you are just taking this all too much to heart and making it far too personal by reference to specific clubs and Dj's. Getting back to the original thread a discussion on nighters and if the other smaller clubs are killing them ? Whats killing them .... Old age it's as simple as that for me I just can't do it anymore . I have just done a great weekender where i paced it to stay up until 2am friday and saturday plus did two dayers ( where i enjoyod the best of music ) then went to the mars Barr nighter last night where if I am being honest I was shot to pieces. I hit the brick wall at 10 pm ! having done close to 400 miles in the mix of it all. I don't want to do drugs and my body can only do so much , I want to reach 65 with good health and I know if I supported "Nighters" that ain't gonna happen. So I prefer soul nights and the more the better because then I have choice , and also I have a life for the next 6 days where I am sort of on the same planet as the rest of the world. I have a good job that I want to keep and family that are important to me too. I think if you asked the soul supporting /attending population it would be as simple as that because those the do nighters are not this large crowd that you think they are anymore. To me you need to accept thats its a small crowd now who has that need specifically. If the survival of the Allnighter scene is so critical dj's would play for nothing thus reducing overheads so you could still get together and share what you love great underplayed soul music with a bunch of friends rather than a big crowd. What is starting to happen in my view , more localised clubs , less travel, and shorter hours. Money has a lot to do with it but I think health is becoming a stronger issue too, as we are getting older. Another reason why I personally don't like Nighters.... The saddest sight for me is seeing a friend who had a great family behind him once and healthy a glow about him turn into the shadow of the person I knew who dances to fast music all night in another world blocking out reality because maybe the daytime is too painful or mundane to endure. On the positive side .... DAYERS ! they are the future I am sure my post will cause some controvasy .... but hey at least it's honest

I have had this problem some time now I guess I am light sensative ? I find these lights are like staring into the sun , actually causing some blind spots . I experienced it last week while at the decks then I noticed there was one above me as well as at the side of me , and this big fella and I mean meaty asked us to turn the lights away because they were causing him much distress. It's horrible at it's worst at places like prestatyn where there are so many sellers trying to attract you to their goods. It really can put you out of sorts I wonder if its my age , be interesting to see who else suffers with this?

I would like to make an appeal on behalf of those of us that find these bright lights normally on sellers tables and sometimes on the decks to be carefully positioned pointing down rather than across a room. I am sure I am not the only one that finds these lights very intrusive , they can bring on migraines and similar reactions to strobe lights for some people. thanks

Ok ... I am an adult, I am 52 years old . I make my own choices I really do object to anyone preaching to me about what and where I should go to "support" this scene. As said before if you have the right combination they will flock to your door. And it's not just about music, it's about the VIBE within the club. Your customer has to feel welcome and comfortable in the surroundings and that can incorporate a whole gambit of requirements. So you better be prepared it's not easy to please everyone because people don't come in one shape or size. It's so easy to blame it on the type of music being played. Maybe the reason why a club has not been successful in filling a room could be down to a combination of the above? As I am getting older my requirements are changing I prefer to go somewhere close to home where the music leans to mid tempo, and what is most important is the people that I share my experience with. It has to be friendly non intrusive and not intimidating. Sometimes I want a down right funky gritty night so I chose my venue accordingly. I found the Beat Boutique very refreshing the other week because they had none of these stuffy rules of etiquette. In fact this was very similar to my experience at Madam Jo Jo's too. I realise a venue has to break even , but in my view success is not measured in the number in the room , success is measured in people within the room having a good time and going home happy. Accept that this time as being the best of times, we have so much choice in the type music we listen to and also in the type of venues that we can attend. I applaud anyone that likes to have a free play policy but I really do object to someone limiting my choice by reducing whats on the shelf to suit their needs in the name of "Supporting this scene ". I want the full garden not just a lawn and I am all for giving unknown Dj's a chance . Soul is not a manoploly there should always be room for new players.

Why do we have to have a set of rules ? and who writes them ? I am all for a free soul community myself , you pays your money and make your choice , be it soul night or nighter. If a clothes shop didn't open because there was another clothes shop three blocks down , we would have a pretty empty high street, dominated by he/she who has been there the longest. I say stop winging about other do's opening near you ...and embrace variety and choice for the customer. The one that delivers the right mix will always survive . This isn't directed at anyone specifically BTW ... but there is really more to life than cribbing about too much choice ?

Hi , mine is maroon too , it looks very authentic doesn't it lol in my ignorance I heard it last month on the York dayer Cd and thought WOW what a fantastic record , immediately searched on ebay to be gobsmacked ( really sorry this bit is going to hurt ) 5 dollars ! in my excitement i snapped it up . Then later I played to my Carmie groups ( audio club) and Kev shattered my Utopia by telling me it was a boot . I then did a bit more research and found Tommys bluey one .... but as luck would have it Nige managed to source an original this week ....so I get to dance to it rather than play it . Who knows in time he may tire of it and sell it to me ............ ..yeah pigs might fly I do recall waiting for Stirling Mgee to fall thru the door once and Frank Ifield turned up in stead Carms

I think Warren has made a very good point , people need to know well in advance the dates. Then you can plan around those dates. What I will also mention is that National express do £1.00 fares and usually these fares are at their best when you travel in the late to early hours. I used to use them loads when I lived in deepest darkest Essex. Perhaps the 100 could twin itself with other clubs ,you know like cities do and the other promoters could coordinate a coach to visit the Mecca of rare soul music ? I think Pete Roberts pomotes the wheel in a similar way , sometimes there seems to be more from the Midlands in the wheel than Mancs Another thought is advance ticket selling to "Members" . If someone pays for the ticket up front they are more likely to go ! You could in fact pay a subsription at a discount rate for two visits a year maybe ? All sorts you could do if you put your mind to it really its just a matter of co-ordination.

My goodness you are growing to grow a beard attempting to answer every post ! I am glad you saw where I was coming from on Crossfire... My point is its no comparison to the 100 , your original post indicated that you wre encouraged by the crossfire attendance I think ... well thats how it came over to me . The 100 is special , don't change a thing other than how frequent you tempt us through it's doors. It's human nature if something is readily available , on a plate like , people will take it for granted. How do you think us woman always get what we want eventually

Ady is doing the right thing in sitting back and letting everyone respond first. So far only a handful has really given an opinion in comparison to those that have attended. It's a brave step asking for a warts and all response , and full credit for doing this. It's just as brave to tell a friend what you think is wrong. People do need to give an "honest" opinion otherwise how can things be addresses. The anniversary night speaks volumes , you always get people making more of an attempt to at least get to this one night. I find it hard to believe that the increase in numbers is due to having a "FREE" disc on entry, it's more about celebrating this great club at least once a year for most. Thing is each year we are getting older , we want more comforts , sorry but it is a fact , most are on the wrong side of 45 now , for those that don't take the "marching powder" it's becoming harder to maintain the nighter culture. This has to figure into the equasion along with distance surroundings and family earnings and job commitments.

Oh it's really sad to read this. I think you will find most of the larger to run or more expensive places are struggling at the moment. People are finding it hard and money is tight. Trouble with the 100 is its quite an expensive trip for northerners now to come and support you. Petrol is not cheap. Lea Hall was very low in numbers the other week , and I have heard the Skegness weekender was the same so its not just your venue. You always get people turn up in droves for "one off events" so I wouldn't bring the turn out for Stafford into the trying to understand why one event can bring in a large mass against another regular reputable event bringing in less. Being honest Ady I am put off coming to London after the I think it was "Crossfire" event where the Flirtations were on . I found the numbers inside this event very oppresive , to the point of being dangerous if a fire broke out , too many people and drinks spilt everywhere and people bumping into you and not having the grace to say sorry , sort of put me off Central London events where the outside public can attend on mass. So comparing this event as a succcess is also wrong compared to the 100 in my view. I travelled many miles for that event and lasted all of 1 hour. I thought the sound system that night was crap too lol lol you said be honest. Win some lose some eh. Maybe less is more ? Make them hungry for it , put 4 on a year , make it members only , and enjoy a little time off imbetween. The music is superb second to none so no change is required there. You may not have success in numbers but your reputation to deliver the best in soul is still up there.
