Hi Derek We do have a record shop in Prestwich , not sure what its called though ? Let us know if you pop in , if we are around we'll pop up and have a coffee or a beer with you. I will try and see what the shop is called when I pass it Saturday .

Where are you from Mario ? I recall having a great night in Barcellona at the Boiler club I think it was called . Went there on the off chance as I was staying in the Bay of Roses with Perditta . We found the majority to be under 35 and it was fab ! They danced to everything and a good time was had by all.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?

Thats commendable thats the attitude required , but not all have it I am afraid . Good and bad apples in every culture , I have got a thing about apples this week ? I go to many do's and they are do's that cover all genres be they old new upfront , whatever label you care to put on it and I have come across individuals that do have this preach rather than embrace culture on a few occasions. I only need to digest some of the posts from certain members on here and my DICKHEAD radar is raised , I have found this usually very reliable ... Glad to read you are not one of them . No doubt this will make me very unpopular in certain areas , but its true . And as for naming names ... thats not my style Steve , they know who they are . And if I am being totally honest I have probably done it myself at some point in my growing up. Sorry about my waspyness , can't be helped I seem to be under seige with them at the moment. -

There possibly are too many events on, however its surely down to offering people an event that they want to attend, without being pretentious, arrogant or giving over the impression that "If you aint with us you're against us" Brilliant post KEV !this is the nail on head moment /part of your post . ------------------------------------- if only many could see this is the problem , there are a few out there that really are very arrogant and they spoil it for the majority , they say they want more to attend , but then they take the piss out of the way the new catchment dress , their lack of knowledge , their attendance record , their history , their lack of worship of the other persons ideals .... I ask you who would in their right mind want to be in the company of people like this ? Personally I wouldn't go if you paid me ! So in all I think the answer is YES Len , for a few they are right up their own jacksies and beyond licking their proclaimed gods of soul jacksies too ! Thing to get into proportion is they are very FEW thank god and easily spotted they have DICKHEAD stamped over their forheads lol -
Oh for gods sake someone give this joker an apple for great attendance .... I'm out of here

Christmas Day ? Would This Work ?
Anais nin Carms replied to Anais nin Carms's topic in All About the SOUL
Oh no I wouldn't do it as a promotion Nige if I did anything it would be a private function with invitations ... just wondered how others felt about souling on Christmas day ? I think from the small reaction I have had people still hold Christmas as sacred family time , which is not a bad thing. -

Christmas Day ? Would This Work ?
Anais nin Carms replied to Anais nin Carms's topic in All About the SOUL
I was just wondering if many would attend ? I know of place in Manchester (hotel ) that might be interested if enough numbers were interested , they could prob do with the bar takings being high on what is normally a quiet day I guess ... I just wanted to get a feel of numbers to see if it could be a goer... thinking of a free event if possible no entrance fee charged , and dj's play for free .. basically a share tunes session and catch up with some mates , new friends , and also help those that face Christmas day alone . Its just an idea -

I was thinking the other day most people I would guess have grown up kids , maybe some are on their own and would like this idea ? Do you think a soul night would work on Christmas day , after everyones had their family get together and stuffed themselves silly ..would a dance get together in the evening be welcome ? If you are like me by about 4pm I am bored rigid , quite like the idea of slipping down to a soul do , and the bonus is you have boxing day to recover Any takers ?

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Anais nin Carms replied to Len's topic in All About the SOUL
It seems to me we are getting entangled in what was played on a specific night ... lets try and get away from specific nights and specific Djs and focus on what Tim or anyone else could hear in an underplayed .. maybe rare soul room .. focus on the positives ? You know I can remember standing in Tonys and moaning about someone that played something I didn't know ... so I know what this guy is going through , like I said its a journey , leap you will eventually make when you have heard enough of the same records. Trouble with many is they alienate rather than encourage I think . -

Lol no those wern't played on the night I don't think ? I was just trying to give Tim some flavours of what he could hear in an underplayed room , its not all R&B and Latin , the whole tempo/genre world is at your disposal. In short ...Its a journey if you want it . -

Hello tim I just want to say don't judge a rare / underplayed room on one visit , keep an open mind and you will receive so many pleasures, These rooms are unlike the main rooms , Dj's in the rare rooms have their own style and taste and they can differ vastly to what you hear in a main room, because that is the whole point of the room to give you the unexpected . Not saying everyone is good though I can see your point if you get a full R&B set and you are not into it , your ears can bleed just as much as mine can listening to Pookie in the main room. I recall hearing one guy play a full set of very slow ballads one night in an underplayed room and we all felt like slitting our throats or going to sleep lol .... The trick is to keep it varied and play the tempo according to the mood and time. Lets recomend something for you to listen too that you might hear in this room and see if you still have the same thoughts...come on guys show Tim some hidden treasures.... source these in utube and tell me what you think ? ... because its those rare rooms that give us a chance to air these fantastic records that would not see the light of day in a main room. Hi Liam I think it's great to see younger people at soul do's , you are people that will take it forward when most of us are dead and gone . This may be helpful for you to know , try to travel to Europe if you can where there appears to be a much younger crowd at the do's that are held in Italy , Spain and Germany for example. When I lived in Colchester Ady C and Donna had a do going at the arts centre , it was lovely to see more young people than old , they did not have any hang ups about oldies and newies and loved the sounds played. Same vibe was had at Liams do at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester , so there are other do's where you might find more youngsters attend . I think living in a city or town where there are students is an added bonus because I think they tend to want to explore music more? Lots of the crowd in Coly were either students, or the threatre staff that backed onto the venue. Having said that please carry on going to do's here and ignore anyone that makes childish remarks . Me being old , I depend on the likes of you to give me a seat lol Enjoy

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Anais nin Carms replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
What did I do last weekend Because I had a very heavy weekend prior to last weekend I decided to have some time off souling , I find this is good for me as it makes me have more of an appetite for the next do I go to . I believe that you can have too much of a good thing and its good to try fasting at times , makes you want it more ! Friday was a very heavy day at work , I was so tired I just wanted to chill out at home , have a nice soak a bottle of wine and chill out...relax Saturday breakfast at Browns in Manchester a walk around town and then spent the evening listening to sounds at home and having an early night. This week I have had to cover someone elses work because they are on holiday so I very much needed a clear head approach to Monday , so yes my weekend was tame... but resposible becuase of the type of work I do I really need to be on top form , there is no hiding place in my occupation. This weekend after a really hard weeks work I am going to do Brighouse Ritz , and I am going to get slightly drunk , love the venue and also seeing some yorky pals that I don't normally see elsewhere, it will be oldies in the main i guess, but I don't mind ..the social side will be grrrrrrreat I ma sure, plus the beer will be cheap. Saturday its a long trek down to Gloucester ... but it will be worth it , If there is one modern room that does it for me its this one . Evryone down there looks so damn happy its brilliant and they really know how to get down . Passion used to come into it but now other things take priority for me I am afraid ... having a clear head for work , cash , and just general health ... listen to your body it tells you when you need to step back. I have to admit I am not a slave to it anymore I cut my cloth to suit my life , and I don't feel the need/obligation to convert anyone into the Church lol each to their own I say -
The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Anais nin Carms replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
I am still of the mind that you never had it so good , choice is a good thing , imagine your town with only one PUB , the bitchin side of things is something you will never stamp out ... just keep away from those that bitch and intimidate you. Points to rememeber - 1.In the main people that go out on mass want to hear Classic Northern soul , you will never entice these people into wanting to go to a rare unknown soul night , they are quite happy doing what they do. And being honest I don't understand the need for the crusade to try and convert these people ? Perhaps I am not fanatical ? 2. People that go out to hear unknown rare cuts have to travel if they are not fortunate to live in "rare soul hot spot" so these people tend to create their own little satalite soul do's where collectors get together and share ... numbers are few , but all enjoy themselves just the same. These could turn into private members clubs going forward ? If you want to have a "Standard" monthly rare /unknown soul nighter you will need to organize group 2 to sign up to some sort of membership ( bit like the Scouts/Brownies) to agree to have a ging gang goolie session (POW WOW ) where they all attend to enable them to create a big crowd Personally the best nights I have had is when only two consenting adults are in the building Love and peace ... Lets get proactive ... name the most inspiring do you have been to this year ( and it must not be one you promote or Dj at on regular basis ) GRUMPY SOUL ! The long and short of it is the rare/soul fans are the minority ... You may achieve a crowd of 200 at best ... me thinks ..please correct me if I am wrong -
The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Anais nin Carms replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
Simple Solution - It seems to me reading the thread that its those that have been doing it for years and prefer their soul underplayed and rare that are unhappy about the state of affairs, Only the promoters of those types of events can solve this one Why don't all the Rare Soul/Underplayed nighter promoters get together and agree to take turns to host a ONE AND ONLY rare soul allnighter once a month ,You will then achieve a larger gathering that is in perfect harmony ? The downside means you will lose your regular monthly slice of the action though as you will be having to share and take it in turns to host the event. I would like to see those who are so passionate about preserving "The Rare Soul Scene" put their names to such a policy. You see you are playing a "Losing Game" with the mass at soul nights if you think they are going to follow your path so you have to clean up/organise yourselves better to achieve what you want. -
The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene

Quote Weekenders have given guys like Carms and I who dont particularly enjoy hitting that 4am wall a chance to dance til dawn and sleep it off a few hundred yards away. Mikey I am a laaaaaady lol Can also add I love the idea of Sunday art centres playing rare soul , cross over , blues , funk , whatever ...and they are on the way..the future ... doesn't York have one now at the riverside? and theres the horse and groom at Donny which I haven't had a chance to visit yet ... There is much to be happy about Why don't all of you nighter people have an email group and support each other ? I think your expectations that you are going to appeal to the mass is a bit unrealistic so what you need to do is consolidate what you have , that should be easy cause they are all on here...where the mass handbag /baggy people arn't ? Off course I am an exceptional hand bagger lol cause I think i know my rare meat ... -
The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Anais nin Carms replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
Oh dear , such a dark picture you are all painting , funny thing is whenever I see any of you ( those that I know) you never look unhappy ? Personally I don't like nighters anymore , I don't take substances to help me to stay awake/keep up and to be frank I find nighters a little seedy and intimidating . I know for some this is all part of the experience , it's not for me though. I don't condem other peoples needs , we are all adult , but then I would expect them to respect my wishes to not to attend. I am no lightweight when it comes to soul , I just don't wish to be up all night as I have other things in life that I want to do with my time. I would imagine thats what some nighter people call a lightweight ? or a handbagger ? I much prefer a local do where I have got to know the people and have a proper discussion with them rather than be talked at and who also who have a passion to collect and share. I found a few clubs like this local to me so I guess I am very lucky. There are those that put do's on that cater for the masses , in general I am not a big fan of these do's , I don't like large crowds, and I like to have room on the dancefloor. But I have found now that the collectors and chill out rooms are taking shape ( that has to be a massive plus ) it caters for my needs . I don't begrudge those masses that "some" call handbaggers or the baggy trouser brigade their good time because its their money /entrance fees that have aided in the creation of the additional facility of the collectors room . I think the buzz word should be tolerance , there is room for everyone What I do loath is when people snipe at others because their belief/understanding of Northern soul differs to theirs. I have no problem with a promoter making money , treating it as a business ...when you do something on a large scale it is a business , why people resent others for this I can't understand ? You don't go to work not to be paid ?
