The system I use, and the percentage of a Mint value each condition is worth, is as follows: MINT: Perfect. May well have been played once or twice, but there are no marks and no audible evidence of playing (100%) MINT-: As above, but maybe one or two very light marks, possibly caused by removing the record from the sleeve (90%) EX: Very few light marks, but no deterioration in sound (75%) VG+: Many light marks, and a small amount of surface noise, though this should not detract from the music. (55 - 60%) VG: Surface marks - played quite well with some surface noise and maybe one or two superficial scratches. (50%) GOOD: Lots of marks/scratches and noise, but will still play through with no jumps or sticks. Not a nice copy to listen to. (25%) FAIR / POOR: Don't even go there! Using your own judgement, plus and minus can be used between any of the grades. For example, a record in EX- condition is likely to be in better shape than one in VG+. Hope this helps. Gene

Apparently, the Watusi is like a hand-wave in the air. If you watch the bit on Quadrophenia, immediately after Sting has danced (if you can call it that) to Louie Louie, you can see the Watusi in action in the background.

Only version of this I know is by Johnny Otis, on the flip of Country Girl. Can't believe the bad language his version is peppered with!

Sorry Tony - gotta correct you there. Helen Shapiro was born in Bethnal Green Hospital and raised in Clapton (bordering Hackney with North London). She went to Clapton Park Comprehensive School. You're right in saying that her family were Jewish though. Clapton and Stoke Newington always had (and still does) a large Jewish population.

No he can't - not any more!

Hi Mal, Having checked out mischino's feedback, it wouldn't be the first time he's messed up with similar issues. I would say that the best thing to do is to either leave neutral or negative feedback constructively stating the facts. The very worst he can do is block you from his auctions, but if he's prone to so much error, would you really want to continue doing business with him? I think his star rating also leaves a little to be desired. Meet you over lunchtime coffee soon! Gene

The only one of these I've seen is a handwritten white label test pressing, which looks like it's been written by a child.

Love just about everything Dusty ever recorded, but top of my list has to be her version of "Wishin' & Hopin'" and also "Little By Little".

Phil Spector and Joe Meek are very alike in many ways. Both had a unique production technique during the early '60s which, apparently, other studios and producers tried to emulate with no success. Both Spector and Meek suffered some sort of psychological disorder. Spector blamed most of it on his persecution at school because he was a Jew. Sadly, both producers had an unheathy interest in firearms. In 1965, Phil Spector wanted to meet Joe Meek during a trip to the UK. Meek flatly refused, mainly due to paranoia about Spector trying to 'steal some of his recording techniques'.

There's a great similarity between the backing tracks of "How Can I Forget" by Joey Dee, and "Fool That I Am" by Bobby St Clair on Philips. Anyone know this one?
-
Also, harking back to a thread from a couple of years ago, does anyone realise that "I'm Losin' Your Love" by The Intentions is nothing more than a fastened-up cover version of "I Got To Handle It" by The Capitols? And for those who know "Tracy (All I Have Is You)" by Barry White on Faro, was this an outright steal of "Hit The Road Jack" by Ray Charles?
-
Good call Pete. Don't forget that "I Guess I'll Always Love You" also has a vocal line which Lillie Bryant could well have plagiarised. Do you think "Heartaches Away My Boy" by Christine Cooper could also have been singled out because of parts sounding like "Stop In The Name Of Love"?
-
Yep - 'twas definitely the original! I would guess a reasonable value these days would be around £15 - £20. From memory, Lorraine Silver also covered the B-side "I Know That You'll Be There" as the B-side to Lost Summer Love! Do correct me if I'm wrong though.

Well done Kev! Hope you enjoy, and that you're not disappointed.

Interesting. Here's the pic sleeve for my German copy of I'm On Fire.........she does look a bit like Tina Charles, come to think of it. The other side (which wasn't released here), "Bye Love", is also a crossover-type dancy track; and it's a male vocal.

I can - and probably changing the title of the Free track to something a bit more supremacist?

About 25 years ago I used to have an excellent 45 on Pye by Guy Fletcher called "Keep On Loving Me". It was a yellow demo and dates (according to the stamp) from May 1968. It is a brilliant UK uptempo pop-stomper with overtones of "Baby Now That I've Found You". I have NEVER seen another copy - UK collectors (and Pete, take note!), keep a look out for this! From what I can recall, Guy Fletcher was a song-writing partner with Doug Flett, and I think they wrote a fair bit of material for Cliff Richard which were submitted as potential Eurovision entries that year, but were rejected. However, their composition "Power To All Our Friends" did make the 1973 Eurovision for Cliff. Also, on the subject of Eurovision, what about "Love Games" by Belle & The Devotions?
-
Yep - it is nice Pete! Also the B-side to their single.
-
I reckon "Oh Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison would have had potential had it not been a chart hit in the UK. So, too, could have been "Something Here In My Heart (Keeps A Tellin' Me No)" by the Paper Dolls. Also a couple of interesting B-sides come to mind: THE BROTHERS: Love Don't Change (UK Bus Stop) - B-side of "Sing Me" and, yes, another bunch of Opportunity Knocks winners GLITTER BAND: Makes You Blind (UK Bell) - B-side to "People Like You & People Like Me". Stomping instrumental, though I think a lot of people already know about this.
-
I still regard "I'm On Fire" by 5000 Volts as one of my all-time faves. Was this recorded with Northern Soul in mind?

Sorry to upset you Morgen, but it's now April 3rd!
