The Gems - I'll Be There - Riverside Ever Booted?
Gene-r replied to Benji's topic in Look At Your Box
Hi Benji, One sure way of finding out is that all the WDJ bootlegs were pressed on thin styrene. If you've got a vinyl original, I guess a sensible price for a white demo would be around £50. -
Ive noticed that the cut of "There's Nothing Else To Say" on Contempo has a vocal track which is different and more overbearing than the Audio Arts release, and one that I've never heard anywhere else. Where would this one have come from?
-
Yep - that is the real deal. It was bootlegged with a repro of the blue label in your scan, but the run-out dead wax area is really narrow. Also, just 2 seconds before the intro of each side, there should be a very faint piano-like tinkle lasting for a second.
-
I noticed a while ago that "I Can't Take No More" by Ted Wilson, on Sierra, was written by British duo Les Reed and Barry Mason, who also wrote songs for the likes of Engelbert Humperdinck etc. Les Reed was also an orchestra leader, quite well-known on the easy listening scene. I'd be curious to know if there was a unreleased UK demo of "I Can't Take No More" ever made, maybe as a demo for just Reed and Mason's ears (or even released as an LP track in the UK). And how would it make its way to the USA without doing anything over here? Any ideas, anyone?
-
Unsung heroes and soul celebs come and go here, but this has taken me by surprise! Warmest wishes and welcome to Soul Source, Cecil. I know it's been said before, but both "I Don't Like To Lose" and "The Light Of Day" are two sides that will stay in my Top 50 soul faves for the rest of my life. A pleasure to read your posts here - hope there's more! Can't wait to read more about Prophonics, Washington Square etc...... Best wishes, Gene

Yes, but behind the 'image' was ignorance and fear

Paul, someone sent me a record some years ago and used an unsleeved copy of "Public Image" by PIL as a stiffener. Only reason I complained is that it didn't come with the newspaper wrap-round!

It's as soulful as Black Sabbath, but I love it to bits. Raymond Lefevre's version was a UK Top 40 hit in 1968 - that's when I remember it being played most. My brother bought his LP with that track on it. He also did a nice orchestral cover of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on it.

Been chatting to a friend just now about Gloria Hill. Because of the early-type sound of the record, I guess it was recorded/released around 1961. He thinks it could be more around 1965. Anyone out there in the know? I thought info on the Deep label was quite sketchy, but if anyone can help, we'd surely appreciate it! Cheers, Gene

"I've Got A Feelin'" by Big Maybelle (Okeh), which has been getting spins, dates from 1954. Doubt there's anything much earlier than this.

My personal PIR faves are: THE O'JAYS: Livin' For The Weekend HAROLD MELVIN: The Love I Lost THREE DEGREES: Year Of Decision

Totally agree on Marv Johnson. Might just as well be an early incarnation of "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies.
-
Don't think he did - think it was Roger Greenway and Roger Cook.
-
Thanks for the heads-up guys! Interesting to note that Nosmo (aka Stephen Jameson) was a member of The Truth - never knew that until now.

Love, like or hate it - "Goodbye Nothin' To Say" by The Javells & Nosmo King will always be around as a toe-tappin' tune! But does anyone know the story of how this got to be played? See, I've just picked up a demo of "Goodbye" by Nosmo King (pictured below), released July 1974. It's actually the B-side to "Teenage Love". I know that it made the UK Top 30 in November 1974, but did it actually get played out anywhere between this time, or was it just a mock-up reissue for the UK charts? So, apart from a clever play on words for this guy (No Smoking), does anyone have any info on its origins? Maybe even a value? Yours, Nowan King (no relation)

Uk And Us 45s For Sale - With Scans And Sound Clips
Gene-r replied to Gene-r's topic in Record Sales
You're joking of course Pete! Actually, it was her first UK release, but the only one (it appears) of real credibility. Three other UK RCA singles are valued at around £8 - £12, but only likely to sell to collectors of "chanson".
