    King Coleman Rip

"Black Bottom Blues" on Columbia - what a record, and one which totally belies the title. Stomping R&B. RIP King C.

  3. From www.bbc.co.uk R&B pioneer 'King' Coleman dies in hospital aged 78 Rhythm and blues pioneer Carlton "King" Coleman has died at the age of 78. The US singer died on Saturday from heart failure at a Miami hospital, his son said. Coleman was best known for singing lead vocals on 1959 hit (Do The) Mashed Potatoes, recorded with James Brown's band. He also released numerous solo singles including Mashed Potato Man and The Boo Boo Song. Coleman also performed with many artists including BB King and Jackie Wilson. Radio DJ His son Tony went on to become BB King's drummer. "I can say that I'm proud to be his son," Tony Coleman said. "I'm proud to be working with one of his colleagues. He was one of the originals. He was one of the roots, and I'm one of his fruits." King Coleman was also a radio DJ, starting out in the 1950s on a US station in Tampa, Florida. More recently, Coleman hosted a nightly radio show called Nothing But Love on WMBM, now a gospel station.
  4. Result Pete!
  5. Pete - sorry to hear about this rip-off merchant, and hope you sort things out with Ebay. On the other hand, I put some Northern Soul CDs on Ebay last week. Because of overseas PayPal fraud, I only send anything overseas by Air Mail signed for. Therefore, I charged £6 P&P overseas (clearly stated ON my ad) and paid the charge of the jiffy bag myself. The auction was won by a bidder from Germany. This prick paid for the item, then sent me a message saying: "i will look on the package for 6bp. this is realy expensive!!!" Air Mail cost £5.95, not to mention the 64p for the jiffy bag which I paid for myself. As I now had proof of this, I sent him back the following message: "Your Air Mail registered postage came to £5.95. The jiffy bag was 64p. However, since freebie hunters like yourself prefer to think that jiffy bags are free (which in the UK, they are NOT), your PayPal account has been refunded with 0.05p postal overage. I hope you find this satisfactory." I also went to the sarcastic, insulting measure of actually refunding him 5p via PayPal, just to show him what I really thought of him. Which goes to show that not only are there still (unfortunately) the postal rip-off merchants on Ebay, but also the freeloaders who are either too ignorant or as thick as shit to read terms, conditions and P&P costs or just generally want everything for nothing (mainly from certain European countries which I won't mention).
  6. It was released in Holland under the title "Well Tempered Soul" - not Would You Believe.
  7. ALL UNSOLD ITEMS NOW ON EBAY!
  8. A group of black American servicemen, who called themselves The Pharaohs (no relation to Richard Berry's group) toured the UK during 1958. They sang doo-wop and jump jive standards, and released an ultra-rare EP on Decca (their only recording as far as known), which now changes hands for around the £1,000++ mark, making it the rarest British R&B / Rock n' Roll EP (see below from Popsike). Wonder if this would have pre-dated the jazz musicians importing US soul/blues artists? https://www.popsike.com/MEGA-RARE-UK-EP-THE-PHAROAHS-on-DECCA-Near-Perfect/4813459517.html
  9. Hi Harry, Thanks for posting it up - that's the first time I've heard it in 25 years (was a goose-pimple moment when I played it again!). Hope you, Di and the family are all well - best to all, and hope to catch up soon. All the best, Gene
  10. Hi Moldie, Long time no hear! Hope you're well mate. Please give my best to Pete when you see or chat to him again. Keep in touch - drop us a line sometime. All the best, Gene PS - thanks for the 'Ganash' heads-up, Ken!
  11. Yep - brilliant! And none other than Nicky James - "So Glad We Made It / I Need To Be Needed" (UK Philips BF 1566). Released April or May 1967. This is one Nicky James 45 you just don't see anywhere! Most of his stuff is rare, but apart from one copy (which belonged to Pete Myles, played covered up as Bobby Fuknoze), it has totally eluded me. Sadly, Nicky James died of a brain tumour in October 2007, just 64 years of age. As for such an excellent record, well "so glad you made it, Nicky" There's also the original forces' sweetheart, Anne Shelton's "Rome (Wasn't Built in A Day)" on Philips 326530 BF, released in 1962
  12. Indeed he was Geoff. He later produced records for the likes of Shirley Bassey. But I've never heard it called "I Stand Accused Before The Merseys" before. He must have seriously upset the Liverpudlians.
  13. "You're absolutely right"!!
  14. A very sad loss indeed. RIP Bobby.
  15. On DJM, I'd say about £10 - £12 for an issue, and about £15 - £20 for a demo in a yellow promo sleeve.
  16. Guys - treat yourselves! These are excellent bargains which I can definitely recommend: H.B. BARNUM - BACKSTAGE / RENTED TUXEDO - IMPERIAL DEMO EX 10 (A-side is awesome!) THE DUBS - JUST YOU - WILSHIRE M- 15 (nice early '60s group vocal dancer) JEAN DUSHON - IT WON'T STOP HURTIN' ME - LENOX EX 20 (seen for more over the years) Pete - I'll send you the commission bill after the next list is published!
  17. WAKE UP TO THE REALWORLD, GIRL!
  18. Will the resultant single released under the pseudonym of Renee and Renato, and called something like "Save Your Love" be a collectors item now, Ken?
  19. I believe that Lttle Ann (Ann Bridgforth) is now dead. How long ago?
  20. English is taught as a second language in the Netherlands, which means the Dutch are just as fluent in English as they are their own language. When I went to Holland, records were kept mainly in two separate areas; general European music, and Dutch pop/folk music. Even the Dutch artistes' records credits were English, apart from the title of some folk records of course! Would love to know which country this frightening looking cover comes from!
  21. Wouldn't have thought so to be honest, Tony and Denbo. Irish pressings of records looked deadly similar to their British counterparts - looked and felt the same, and even had the same types of centres (quite similar to Indian pressings of UK records). I think it's more likely to be European IMO (eg, Germany or Holland).
  22. I would have thought Aus or SA issues would have had solid centres, Pete. Could also be Dutch IMO.
  23. Actually, an old record dealer friend of mine had some records for me a few years ago when I went to see him. He threw me a copy of a Freddie Davies single on UK Major Minor called "I Want Me Seed". He was disappointed, as he bought it thinking (by the title) that it was a reggae single!
  24. Remember Freddie "Parrot Face" Davithhhhhhhhhhhhh and his "Thentimental Thongth"?
