  1. Then I guess 'that's all folks'!
  2. I do love Jamaican and US labels, mainly because of the imagination and design that goes into them. But here's a mystery to me. Joe Gibbs' Pressure Beat label from the early '70s. I've always been intrigued to know why Joe depicted cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny on the label. Was he a fan of Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies, or were they just put on there for the hell of it? Any ideas, anyone? I could bet a week's wages that permission was not sought to depict these cartoon characters!

  4. Yes. I can confirm that my old copy was off-centre. There are two issues; one with a ridged label, and one with a totally smooth label. It appears to affect most, if not all, of the ridged label copies. Don't know whether the same can be said about the smooth label issues though.
  5. Very sad news. Reports say he died on 22 March, aged 82. You can't say he didn't have a good innings though. RIP Keith.
  6. You may laugh, but this really does work. Pete, place the record on a flat surface and smear a layer of thick bleach or Domestos over the affected area (it has got to be thick bleach, not thin). Leave for a couple of hours, or until dried. Wash the residue off under a tap, dry and play. Most of the time, I find that whatever's left in the grooves gets played out. You may have to repeat this process twice or three times, but rest assured - bleach is NOT destructive or corrosive to vinyl. I just cleaned a similarly paint-stained copy of "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard on Specialty with brilliant results.
  7. I remember this first going on sale around Summer 1984.
  8. Totally recommend the Clarence Williams on Tina - a steal at £10!
  9. Correct on both counts, Pete!
  10. There's an excellent version of Tom Jones' "Never Give Away Love" by Ron Phillips on White Cliffs. The version by Tom Jones was the original B-side to "Stop Breaking My Heart".
  11. And it looks like it was hand-drawn!
  12. You should have had fresh orange juice for breakfast Ian - tastes exactly the same coming up as it does going down!
  13. Sorry - I know this is a rather old thread, but Sam Chatmon's Wikipedia page may explain why no one has been able to talk to him. Assuming it's the same man, he was born in 1897 and died in 1983. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Chatmon
  14. "Bonnie Herman 66 I think. She was gorgeous " So were the Joey Heatherton twins
  15. I absolutely love The Hurting Is Over. Was released in Stereo, so don't know if it's late 60s, or an early '70s track. There's not much info around about the Mars La Tour label.
  16. Don't know of specific release dates, but I'm sure the Furys and Fi-Dels date from 1967.
  17. Yes - was covered up and played by Ion and Dean Anderson as "Tonight" by Eric Mercury around 1984. Have no idea of a current value, 'cos hardly ever turns up for sale.
  18. Vintage was a regular haunt for me between 1979 and 1985 - think they closed down after that. The owners, Pete Dickerson and Mike Gordon, weren't the most friendliest people in the world, but they were very helpful, albeit very straight-laced and serious. Every time they heard me talking about a record I was after, one of them would look for it in their boxes. If they had it, out it came and on to the turntable - hint hint! Although nothing to do with soul, in the early '80s they had a selection of EPs on Philips & Fontana by Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, The Four Pennies, Manfred Mann and the Walker Brothers in massive quantity, all unplayed and for 75p each! The last time I visited, I went through their 50p bargain bin and turned up VG+ copies of "Fannie Mae" by Buster Brown and "Yum Yum Yum" by Joe Tex, both on UK Sue.
  19. There are a couple of soul records which sound to me like they have influences from other countries in the world. For example: BOBBY TREETOP: Wait 'Til I Get To Know You (has a Chinese-sounding intro) WENDELL WATTS: Kiss A Good Thing Goodbye (the intro sounds like something from a vintage Bollywood movie!). Anyone think of any more?
  20. The only dealing I had with Richard Domar was at Loughborough in 1989, when he bought some records from me! Can even remember what they were: Younghearts WDJ on Canterbury, and Wayne Gibson on UK Columbia issue. He paid me £25 for the pair (my asking price), which was fairly decent at the time. I found him quite friendly enough; even shook my hand and introduced himself to me. Spent all the niter playing pool and smoking, but he was OK. Reminded me of a pocket-sized Geof Capes!
  21. "Sometimes when i drop a needle there's noise but then it suddenly stops for a moment." Try placing the needle carefully on the record next time, then.
  22. The Pornodisc wasn't a freebie with a 'magazine' was it?
  23. "I Just Can't Help Myself" by The Volumes on UK Pama? (quickly ducks under the parapet)
  24. The same year I found mine in Greenwich market for £1! Swopped it with Dawn Brown a year later for The Arcades on Triad.
