All items sent by recorded / registered P&P: UK - £2. Rest of world - £6. Please PM to reserve any item. I accept PayPal, cheque or PO. Items reserved for THREE DAYS ONLY. No tyre-kickers, freeloaders or time wasters....... UK ITEMS (see scans below) THE SHOW STOPPERS: Ain't Nothing But A Houseparty / What Can A Man Do (Beacon - GREEN LABEL / BEA 100) VG+ (wol) £5 RONNIE JONES: Little Bitty Pretty One (CBS) VG / VG+ OFFERS OK, now here's the run-down on this. A couple of people have been talking about this of late. It's a lovely uptempo beat cover of Bobby Byrd's original. Ronnie Jones was also in Herbie Goins' Night Timers. Now the condition of this is far from Mint - there are quite a few surface marks on the A-side, though nothing deep, and plays EX-. The B-side has some circular turntable-type marking, but also plays fine (not that you'd really want to play the B-side). I've seen UK demos of this on Popsike at varying prices, but never seen an issue. As I haven't a clue what to ask for it (also in view of its visual condition), the best offer by 9.00pm UK time on Thursday 14th July gets it. Don't be shy......... PHILLIP MITCHELL: Free For All (Winner Take All) (Jayboy) EX (wol) £5 LOU JOHNSON: A Message to Martha (Kentucky Bluebird) (London) MINT- £10 THE WEBS: Tomorrow / This Thing Called Love (London) EX- / VG++ £8 ELLA WASHINGTON: He Called Me Baby (Monument) VG++ £5 MIGIL 5: One Hundred Years (Pye) VG / VG+ (wol) £5 ON HOLD Nice mid-tempo beat ballad. Some light surface marks caused by storage without a sleeve, but plays fine. SYLVIE VARTAN: I Made My Choice (RCA) VG++ £20 Some very odd looking, superficial scuffs on the B-side which do not affect playing. BOB & EARL: Harlem Shuffle (Sue) EX+ (wol) £5 US & UK PRESSINGS / REISSUES - ALL AT £5 EACH (or make me an offer on the lot) SORRY, ALL PRESSINGS NOW ON HOLD!

Hi, Does anyone know the current value on "Little Bitty Pretty One" by Ronnie Jones on UK CBS? Looks like there were two issues of it, but with different B-sides. The one I need help on is the issue with "Put Your Tears Away" as the B-side. Popsike list demos only, and at varying price ranges, but it's really of no help to me. If anyone out there can help, would be very grateful. Thanks!

Pete, does it leave a residue, or can that easily be cleaned off anyway?
-
Actually Kev, I'm not sure they are. I recall seeing a pic of them on here a few years ago - pretty sure it was an all-black group with a couple of female vocalists added for good measure. Anyone confirm or correct that for me? Ta.

And here are some bits from my collection. The Earl Grant is from Hong Kong, and the rest are from New Zealand.
-
Yep - if it's the instrumental track you're talking about Gary, it's by Pal & The Prophets on Jamie. I assume it's the same Pal (Rakes) & The Prophets who did "Can't Deny The Hurt" - is that right?

The clip of Judy Hughes on Shivaree is absolutely awesome! I didn't know about it either, but I have just been pleasantly gobsmacked! And she's quite a cutie! PS - The Contessas is also brilliant! Can't believe it's only a £20something record - sounds like it should be worth at least five times that amount!
-
Blimey - at this price, I can't believe they haven't gone yet!

Hi Dave, Sure does! Gene

The pink label issue on NUVJ has the sudden end. The only releases I know of that have the three-note end are the US Vee Jay reissue from 1976, and the UK DJM release from the same year.

My first NORTHERN soul Emidisc was a 4-track EP: "(I Love Her So Much) It Hurts Me - The Majestics / You've Been Away - Rubin / Fortune Teller - Benny Spelman / Hurt - The Victors". Quality was very cassette-standard, but then it was my first!

Really pleased to see how the thread is going - lots of interesting clips which I'm looking forward to listening to in my lunch hour, or when I get home later. Keep it going!

Good call.......

Lovely!

Actually Mike, Sunset is a budget label which was distributed by Liberty / Philips in the late 60s / early 70s. Most of the output was R&R like Eddie Cochran or Johnny Burnette, but there were some nice soul-type LPs by Timi Yuro and Ike & Tina Turner (the R&B LP with a different take of "Dust My Broom"). Not heard ot the Dutch Sunset though, but would be keen to know if there was one active in the 70s / 80s.

You're not wrong there. But the term "brown eyed NORTHERN soul" wouldn't quite have the same ring to it!
-
Cunnie, you've got to call it blue eyed NORTHERN soul, otherwise it annoys a pedantic minority here.........

Same guy who did "Happiest Day of My Life" on Acta, Ken?

Hey Pete - yep it's British and it's on Philips. It's a '67 release, and is the B-side of "I Need To Be Needed". Pete Myles used to play this covered up as (wait for it), "So Glad" by Bobby F*knoze (yes I'm serious!). I think Nicky James had some involvement with the Moody Blues before they hit with "Go Now". His group, The Nicky James Movement, originally consisted of John Bonham (Led Zepplin), Bev Bevan (ELO) and Mike Pinder (Moody Blues). Sadly, he died in 2007 after a long illness. Couldn't find a clip of this on YouTube, else I'd have posted it here for you. Wonder if it's in Refosoul?

As 60ssoulboy says, best to go for the "Something Bad On My Mind" LP for about £30 - £40. May be wrong, but I think "It'll Never Be Over For Me" on the LP is the only way of owning the Stereo cut of this track.

The debate on the Javells post regarding black NORTHERN soul v white NORTHERN soul really got me thinking, and relating the differing views to my 27 years on the scene. I like to think that NORTHERN soul music is as diverse as the people who listen to it and buy the music . I thought that the previous thread of mine would have run its course, but it seems quite a few of us are happy to keep the chat on this subject going, so here I am again - complete with amendments. Here's my list of blue-eyed NORTHERN soul faves - obviously it will always be far from complete, as there is so much out there, but these for me are the more outstanding ones: THE MARTELLS: Where Can My Baby Be THE DEADBEATS: No Second Chance THE MODS: Dry My Eyes BOBBY PARIS: I Walked Away GARY SOL'E: Holdin' On TONY COLTON: I Stand Accused MARK LOYD: When I'm Gonna Find Her LYNNE RANDELL: Stranger In My Arms B J THOMAS & THE TRIUMPHS: Keep It Up THE BUCK ROGERS MOVEMENT: Take It From Me Girl JOANNIE SOMMERS: Don't Pity Me ROCK CANDY / CONTEMPLATIONS: Alone With No Love (I'm assuming it's white) NICKY JAMES: So Glad We Made It STEVE ALDO: YOu're Absolutely Right THE SEVEN SOULS: I Still Love You (bearing in mind the 50-50 mix of black and white in the group) THE TEMPESTS: Just about anything they've committed to vinyl (and yes, I know Hazell Martin is a black singer!) Be interested to get a cross-section of views on the above, and also to hear what your fave blue-eyed NORTHERN soul tunes are. Would also be nice to hear some interesting stories behind the records, if anyone has them. PS: Anyone posting on here with the sole intention of being obstructive, DO ONE NOW. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.

Ted, wasn't it covered up as something like "It May Be Over For You" by Bobby Paris, or something like that?
-
"Ain't Gonna Cry No More" on UK and American Liberty is also a nice tune.

I think the main confusion arises from the two releases of "Alone With No Love". The first release was credited to The Contemplations, and dates from August 1969. It's backed with the instrumental by the "Dontee Studio Band". The second release of this was the B-side to "I Don't Think I'll Ever Love Another" by Rock Candy. This February 1971 release credits Rock Candy as the artists on both sides, when in fact "Alone With No Love" is the very same cut as the Contemplations release. I'd always assumed that Rock Candy only cut one track , "I Don't Think I'll Ever Love Another", and the Contemplations track was used as a random B-side filler because Rock Candy didn't have a track of their own to use as a B-side. Then again, I could be wrong. Interesting, though.

TWO liner, Dave! Tut, tut, tut.......
