Old as this post is, so apologies if I've already mentioned it ('cos I can't be assed ploughing through it), but I think white demos of "Every Now and Then" by Cletus Marland on Geneva have got to be up there with the rarest white demos. I think Mark Bicknell had my copy (only one I'd seen or know of) when I sold it - am I right, Mark?

Didn't actually happen to me, but over 30 years ago I was going through a friend's records which his mum and dad gave him that they no longer wanted. I found a copy of "Where Is The Love" by Glen Miller on Doctor Bird. When I asked him what it was (without even playing it), he said his mum bought it in the late '60s thinking it was the bandleader Glenn Miller who recorded things like "In The Mood" and "A String of Pearls" - needless to say she was disappointed by it! Of course, at the time it meant nothing to me - records like these could be found in Daddy Kool's bargain basement at the time for around 70p, simply because hardly anyone wanted them. Time moved on, and so did my mate - to Manchester. We have remained in touch ever since, and he was even best man at my wedding. Now, about 8 years ago, when I heard that "Where Is The Love" was going big (and still not having heard it myself yet) I asked him if he remembered that Glen Miller single he had in his collection. To my surprise, he still had it, and couldn't believe his luck when I sold it for him for £100!

The boot with "I Wanna Be" on the flip suffers from terrible, tinny sound quality. The other boot has perfect sound quality.

Pye Records set up the HBR label in the UK, releasing at least three singles. Sadly, none of them have anything to do with soul, or even pop!

Really odd this one. I've had a couple of his first two 45s as Gerry Dorsey on Parlophone, (released '59 and '61 - there was an earlier one on tri-centre Decca), but never realised that he had a single on Hickory. I imagine this would date from 1964 - 1965? As you say Pete, must have been recorded here for export, as I'm not aware of him having a career outside of the UK pre-Engelbert. Interesting to note that he also wrote one of my favourite childhood stories, Hansel & Gretel!

Following on from John Reed's post about Classical collectors, and speaking as someone who is currently dabbling in collecting and selling early Stereo Classical LPs, it is a very intricate field of collecting. For example, a collector who wants early UK Stereo LPs will focus mainly on three main labels; Decca, Columbia and HMV (some issues on Mercury "Living Presence" also count). However, there are FOUR label variants for Decca (ED1 to ED4), three for Columbia (ES1, ER1 and ER2) and three for HMV (EW1, ER1 and ER2) releases. Obviously the first editions of these labels will command the highest price, but a second issue (which may only have been pressed a matter of months after the first) will only go for around two-thirds the value of a first issue. Third edition Decca (ED3) releases will be worth around a half to a third of an ED1, and ED4 (usually called the 'narrowband' label, and dates from the '70s), may only be worth a quid or two, unless the ED4 is the first issue of an LP and, then again, only very few first issue ED4s are collectable. Condition plays a major part in collecting Classical LPs - most LPs with more than a few tics or noise would be worthless. As a general rule, the majority of Classical collectors are based in the East (mainly Korea, China and Japan), with very few based in Europe.

Good point Tony - I could be wrong, but I'm sure I once saw the later Stateside issue with fat lettering, but with a 'tapered' edge - typical of EMI 7" vinyl from 1972 onwards. Would that be right?

They were a white group - apparently formed at high school.

Ebay believe that all buyers are in the right, even when they're in the wrong. They've treated the seller like dirt for far too long now. There are good and bad sellers, as much as there are good and bad buyers on Ebay, but Ebay won't get rid of the bad buyers - buyers are privileged people; they can leave neutral or negative feedback and muck the seller around as much as they want. Sellers can only leave positive feedback, and nothing else. Surprised no one's tried to sue Ebay under the Unfair Contract Terms Act yet - maybe it's too much of an expensive process. Ebay are just greedy bloodsuckers - they penalise the sellers, forever change the terms of their contract with unrealistic rules and targets, yet they're more than happy to take their money. Vince - as has been said, stick to your guns. This seller has clearly not followed Ebay's procedures, and tried to instigate rules of his own. Be tenacious, and get what you can out of Ebay and the seller. Good luck.
