Actually "Help Truth & The Portraits". Great post which also brings back London memories of Sensible Soul, The Moonlight Club (West Hampstead), and the 'nites' at Grays Inn Buildings, London (I was always invited to the Grays Inn Buildings nites, but never went! Still kicking myself over not going!).

A source gives this a release date of December 1966. Depends how close that is to when Minit went under.

The Monumental 'issue' is a pressing from 1984 - it has "Fortune Teller" by Benny Spelman on the flip. Sound quality is outstanding, though.

"Call On Me" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest mid-tempo sides ever to come out of Detroit, and it's one I sorely regret parting with when I sold up in 2009.

Sold mine for £50 a few years back for the other side (assuming this issue has "Drifting Off Shore" on its flip).

I'm sure Nick Brown has (or had) a near complete Shrine collection.

Didn't know there was a lookalike reissue - only the Soul City one.

Love the seller's name, "isthatenough". But at £249, "morethanenough".

Probably tried to promote it as a double A-side, given that both sides were UK hits by other artistes prior to this.

Also the B-side of Apache - "Quatermasster's Stores". Until recently, I didn't notice the deliberate misspelling (should be Quartermaster), which was titled due to "Quatermass" being shown on BBC TV at the time!

That's right Pete - it was "The Dreams I Dream / Scotch On The Socks". Both sides of the demo had a "B" on the label as a tongue-in-cheek joke - however, stock copies of this sell for about £30 because "Scotch On The Socks" is a psych / freakbeat guitar instro!

Is it possible that EMI used whatever was left of their red and white demo label stock in 1967, just as an attempt to get rid of them?

I remember reading Black Echoes in March 1983, and "Hey Girl You've Changed" was No. 2 in Chris Plant's playlist ("Bring Your Fine Self Home" by the Soulettes was No. 1). But I heard Gary Rushbrooke play it a couple of months later, so maybe Chris obtained his copy elsewhere? Keb Darge and Ian Clark were also playing it at the time, so that would have made at least 4 copies in circulation when it was a 'newie'. As well as Tommy Wills's dubiously named single "Man With A Horn" (and an LP of the same name on the Terry Gregory label which, like some Airtown releases, had the saxophone logo on the label), there are at least two other soul singles on Airtown. "That's The Way" by the Casinos and "I Still Care" by Virgil Murray (also released on Kool Kat). The copy of the Casinos I once had was pressed on vinyl. Not sure if these were local issues before the Terry and Kool Kat releases respectively, though. Of the three Airtown 45s listed on 45cat, the numbers all seem to have a prefix of JB (presumably meaning 'Juke Box'): https://www.45cat.com/label/airtown

Well I've seen the thread about him, and I think I see what you mean...................never had dealings with him though (maybe that's not a bad thing!).

Plus it's also a fond memory of some of the first records I heard that my sister bought when I was only a nipper (both Everlasting Love and Rainbow Valley). She was a Steve Ellis fan, as well as a fan of the Walker Brothers! Unlike my other sister, who wasn't soulful - her idols were Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele!

From experience, a lot of bidders are put off by auctions with reserves. Best to set the minimum bid at the lowest price you'd be happy to sell it for. As an example, I advertised a record earlier this year with a starting bid of £20, but with an undisclosed reserve of £125. Advertised it twice, and it didn't go on either occasion. On the third attempt, I set the minimum bid at £125, with no reserve. It went for £289!

I personally prefer The Love Affair's version of Rainbow Valley to Robert Knight's original. But that is, of course, IMHO!

Anyone remember (or have a copy of) the feature that Record Mirror did on Northern Soul in June 1983? The one which interviews Brian Rae, Julia Rushbrooke (Gary's wife), and opened with the lines "Pete's eyes are glazed, he frantically chews gum...........".
