Basically, it's all down to "era"! The cartoon lion holding the record appeared on US MGM Demos between 1958 to 1968. "Watch Out Girl" by the Embers was a 1970 release, by which time MGM had done away with their "mane" character (excuse the pun!). The lion appeared on certain UK MGM Demos between 1967 and 1969.

The tracks on the EP are "I'm Gonna Run Away From You/The Boy Next Door/At The Party/Run Away (aka You My Love)". The first copy to be played was from a double-sided Atlantic acetate, "You My Love/At The Party", and was played by Keb Darge during the summer/autumn of 1986. I remember when I did my guest spot at the 100 Club in November 1986, Keb came up to me with the acetate in his hand and asked if I wanted to play it before he put it up for sale (via Pete Lawson) for £100. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity and played it during my spot, but didn't have enough cash at the time to buy it myself!! As far as I know, both tracks were never released anywhere, other than on this French EP. How the hell "You My Love" translates to "Run Away" beats me though!! Gene

A genuine error, I think. I emailed the guy using the "Ask Seller A Question" link, to give him some help on what the originals look like, and what to look for in a pressing. He withdrew the record from auction a few hours after (but not before bidding had reached $66!). He obviously advertised it in good faith (he was in the States). I should add that even though the ad stated it was not a reissue, he did ask for help, so was probably still uncertain of its authenticity.

For those UK Soul enthusiasts who remember "This Beautiful Day" (taken from bbc.co.uk): Elvis' backing singer King dies Singer Solomon King, a former backing vocalist for Elvis who sang in The Jordanaires, has died aged 73. The singer, who died in Oklahoma, had been suffering from cancer. King, who was the first white singer to tour with blues legend Billie Holiday, had solo hits of his own with She Wears My Ring and When We Were Young. After marrying Canadian journalist Henny Lowy in 1960, King spent 20 years living in Manchester in the UK. The couple had four children. King was born Allen Levy in Lexington, Kentucky, and was noted for his tallness as well as his singing. At 6ft 8in it is said some TV interviewers refused to have him on their shows unless he sat down. King's chart success in the UK began with She Wears My Ring, which was a top five hit in 1967. When We Were Young was a hit the following year. After his marriage to Lowy ended in 1980, he moved back to the US, where he wed a further two times. He continued singing in clubs in the US on his return.

The record in question was "I'm Thru' Losing You" by King George and the Timps on Midtown. Keb played it covered up as "Baby We're Through" by the Chessmen. Funny, I quite liked it as it was fast, noisy and manic - just the way I like 'em!! Arthur Fenn found a job lot of them, as I bought one from him for £10. Strangely enough, we were chatting about the record last month, and his recollection of the find was really interesting!! Released in October 1967.

All Nite Long was pressed up and ready for sale around October 1983. I bought mine at a 100 Club niter in January the following year, and mine's numbered 708. I paid £10 for it, though the sleeve corner states "$10 RRP"!!!! It's true what Pete says about "No Second Chance" jumping on the first issues. I put this right by weighing down my stylus and that seemed to do the trick. Apparently, WVON did exist as a radio station in America, but not sure if it was based in Chicago. What I do know is, according to '80s fanzine BlackBeat, some American bigots used to say that WVON was an acronym for "Whites Vomiting Over N***ers".

Does that mean that my copy of Rasputin on UK Atlantic is worth more than the one on UK Sire? Is Mick Smith aware of this amazing new discovery on a British label?

"Catch That Teardrop" by the 5 Royales positively dates from 1962. Don't think the De-Lites is as early as 1958 - probably more 1964-65. Apparently, the Cuppy label was owned by Bill Haley, and was named after his wife. Dunno about the "Cuppy" nickname though - guess shes was probably a 38DD or something!

I'm sure there are only two known copies of "The Hurting Is Over" by Arthur Willis & The Soulful Dynamics on Mars La Tour (remember I raved about this a few months ago!!). They're believed to be in the hands of Butch and Andy Rix. Also add to the list (please correct me if I'm wrong): The Limelites: Don't Leave Me Baby (Uncle) - 2/3 copies?
