  1. I can't believe Glenn would do this! I've bought/sold from him, and even met the guy - he seemed quite sound! He did sell me "Dr Truelove" for £15 in 1995, so have to say that I love him!
  2. "I Got To Find Me A Baby. - absolutely brilliant!! Here's some more: Ed Crook: You'll See (That's Alright) High Keys: Don't Leave Me Now (One Horse Town) Rufus Wood: Ghettoville (Before 2001) Gwen Owens: Still True To You (Just Say You're Wanted) Dena Barnes: Who Am I (If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life) Dorothy Berry: Soul Power (Don't Give Me Love) VInce Apollo: Can't Turn My Back (I Bear Witness) Chaumonts: Love Is The Thing (I Need Your Love) The Shalimars: Baby (Stop & Take A Look At Yourself) Spyder Turner: Don't Hold Back (I Can't Make It Anymore) .....more when I think of them.
  3. I don't think it's overpriced at all. It is a 1973 re-issue, but was supposedly withdrawn, making it the rarest Invictus release. I'd say the equivalent of $20 (£12 is a fair price to pay for it. Last year, I sold a Mint demo of INV 502 for just under £40.
  4. I also had it on Commonwealth during the early '80s - is that a boot or a 1st/2nd issue?
  5. I would love to shake Thomas Sawyer by the hand and buy him drinks for a whole night.......that is absolutely brilliant! Hope they don't take the site down.....at least not until I've downoladed the pics of all those legs and the toe-sucking!
  6. OK, so I know it's not soul related, but that's why it's in Freebasing. Very sad news all the same........ From www.bbc.co.uk Reggae legend Desmond Dekker has died suddenly from a heart attack, his manager has announced. The 64-year-old Jamaican, best known for his 1969 hit Israelites, collapsed at his Surrey home. Manager Delroy Williams said the performer had seemed fine when they met a day earlier. "It is such a shock. I don't think I will ever get over this," he said, adding that Dekker led the way for reggae stars such as Bob Marley. "Desmond was the first legend, believe it or not. When he released Israelites nobody had heard of Bob Marley - he paved the way for all of them." The star was divorced with a son and daughter. Peaceful He had been due to perform at the Respect Festival in Prague on 2 June, and numerous dates across Europe during the summer. His last concert was at Leeds University on 11 May. "He was at his peak fitness, he had this big tour coming up for this summer and he was looking forward to it - and then that was it," Mr Williams said. "He died peacefully but it still hurts. I was his manager and his best friend. I don't think anyone knew how close we were - we go back so far." He added: "I didn't even get the chance to say goodbye properly." Chart-topper Dekker was born on 16 July 1941 in Kingston, Jamaica, and began his working life as a welder before turning to singing full-time. Dekker's hits included Israelites, It Mek and 007 (Shanty Town)His band Desmond Dekker and the Aces topped the UK charts with Israelites, which also made the US top 10. He moved to the UK in the '70s, later recording the hit You Can Get It If You Really Want, written by Jimmy Cliff. The musician's popularity waned in the late '70s and '80s, and Dekker was declared bankrupt in 1984. But a new version of Israelites was released in 1990 and used in television commercials, boosting the star's popularity.
  7. About £800 - £1,000
  8. Hey Pete, I'm led to believe that the one in the pic is an Atco reissue, which was pressed around the same time as the orange labelled Luther Ingram (around 1972-73). Gene
  9. Peter Cook & Dudley Moore on "Bo Dudley": "Well Bo, you in America have your soul singers, and we....in Britain.....have arsehole singers!
  10. Sold it for £5 in 1995!
  11. That's just what I thought Pete - but I do recall seeing "This Will Be" by Natalie Cole on a Capitol 12" - wasn't that '75? Or was it actually a reissue?
  12. All are still available!!
  13. I would say, with the clue, entering the UK charts at No. 2, and then going to No. 1? However, it's also famous for the following: - A one-hit wonder. They had no other hits in the UK. - It was originally written for The Monkees. They rejected it. - It was also one of, at least, five UK No. 1s by a fictitious act. The other 4 are - Do The Bartman - The Simpsons - Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh - Teletubbies - Can We Fix It - Bob The Builder - Mambo No. 5 - Bob The Builder and, most importantly......... - It's also famous for stealing the main backing riff from "Come On And Stop"!! Not many people know that!

  15. The Roy Castle 45 was so big last year that it was booted on a CBS Demo 45 with a large centre hole........... The record is currently valued at three figures....... It is Roy Castle's most sought after 45....... AND HE'S A RECORD BREAKER!
  16. Lillian Offitt - Miss You So (1957) Varetta Dillard - That's Why I Cry (1958)
  17. Hmmmmm - wonder how many multiple copies there are of "Night Owl" on Cameo, or "I Walked Away" on Capitol? Now there's a thought.................
  18. Sound system culture always overwhelmed me. Being a student at Hackney Tech (Stoke Newington branch) between 1980 and 1982, we had the pleasure of a sound system playing there at end of year or Christmas parties (usually a local sound system known as Humanity Hi-Fi). First time I attended one of these parties, the very first thing I noticed was that the requirements were basic; one Goldring Lenco turntable, and a cassette deck! I also wondered why, during the first 10 seconds of a record (usually just after the intro), the DJ would stop the record and start it all over again. I later found out that this was to give time for the dancers to get to the dance floor. The next thing I noticed was that it wasn't worth trying to raise conversation with your classmates, as you couldn't hear anything for the sound! I never experienced the atmosphere of a Sound System competition, but from various accounts I gathered during this era of my life, I was led to believe that they would almost always end up in large fights, mainly between the supporting gangs and friends of the competing sound system DJs.
  19. Marilyn Michaels on RCA (1960). Also covered, as Ken quite rightly says, by Laura Lee on Joe Meek's Triumph label in 1960. Laura Lee's version has no involvement from Meek.
  20. From the time I was at my peak at attending the local Youth Club, very little soul features in the Top 10 I can remember at the time. But based on records played to death so many times on their jukebox, here's what I can remember as THEIR Top 10 (not mine!), for what it's worth: 1. X-Ray Spex: Oh Bondage Up Yours 2. Jolly Brothers: Conscious Man 3. Real Thing: Let's Go Disco 4. Klu Klux Klan: Steel Pulse 5. Anarchy In The UK: Sex Pistols 6. If I Can't Have You: Yvonne Elliman 7. Heavy Manners: Prince Far-I 8. I Am A Cliche: X-Ray Spex 9. Wake Up & Make Love: Ian Dury 10.Because The Night: Patti Smith Group Guesses on peak year of attendance?
