Mark Bicknall used to play it in his sets not so long ago with if my memory serves me right good dancefloor response, have a copy myself and wouldn,t part with it, could be one of those that disappear into peoples collections and become scarce, a scenario we,ve seen on many occasions, hence the debates on value. Kev

Yeah, agree with you all the way Phyllis, great contribution from Joan again, check out Gladys Knights equally awesome version aswell Phyllis, on the "Everybody needs love" album, you will not be disappointed. Kev

Turn it over man, just like Kev H says,"Tyra,s Song" is an absolute sublime piece of mid-tempo soul, in fact this is the side that has been getting played in the N.E for 20 years or more to further answer Kev,s question about having the bollocks to play t,other side. Glad Blake emphasised the point about the Florida Spiritulaires, amongst the Lee Fields mayhem an absolute gem of a record has quietly slipped through the net, further emphasising the sad fact of people lacking the vision to find something fresh for themselves cos here is a prime example of a record just crying out for DJ airplay, I paid £80 for mine and don,t regret it for one second, just a shame really that a lot of people are missing out on a fantastic untapped record. A couple of stories on the same line Mischief, a guy I work with who is a self confessed rock nut has just come back from holiday where he told me one night at the hotel that he was staying at 3 American guys who were masquerading as a Jackie Wilson tribute group were the entertainment he said to me " Kev, I couldn,t sit f-----g still, that music is awesome, I danced all night". On another occasion many moons ago, the football team That I played for played a game in Sheffield which was about a 2-3 hour trip for us we stayed after the game for a session (as you do) on departure at 11-30 I produced a tape that someone had given me at a niter and gave it to the bus driver to stick on, within 10 minutes the volume was at full blast and the bus practically rocked from one side of the motorway to the other all of the way back to Aycliffe and out of about 30 people on the bus I was the only one who frequented soul venues. Soul is the only music that can randomly move people IMHO. Regards Kev

Like you say Sean, "You can,t fight whats right" is AWESOME, just picked up a "7". Didn,t know it until Bully copied and sent a CD that you,d done, so thanks to you and Bully for that one mate. Talking about "awesome" Whispers records (theres many IMHO) Blake H posted the "incredible" "Never again" by them the other day, is this track also featured in the set. Kev

Manhattans-Baby I,m sorry-Carnival Great thread Baz, lots of great contributions, impossible to choose a fave Carnival record because of the depth and quality of the output, this one though is right up there for me though, the lead singer George Smith who tragically died in 1970 is one of my all time favourite vocalists. Kev

Thanks for the info Boba, James Thompson wrote "If a woman catches a fool" on bamboo and also "Two lovers" on Frisco, and if he sang lead, that is one talented man. Thanks again, Kev

Great show Boba, wait with anticipation every week for it, question, Voicemasters-Two lovers-Frisco, I know there is a connection with the group and Detroit, but is this a Detroit recording. Regards Kev

You are right John. It was me who got it, I asked Joan to guess how much I had paid for it not so long ago and she said £100, I replied "forget it Joan, Its disappeared" I think its quoted as £100 in JM,s book but I think if someone can get it for that, they,ve been lucky. Its been on the wants thread before, about 18 months ago without coming up trumps. Regards Kev

Like Cliff, I,ve got one aswell, like he says they are out there but must admit I haven,t seen any for sale. Kev

While we,re on the suicidal outlook on the subject, bought Bobby Hutton " Come see" from a well known dealer about 20 years ago, it came broken exactly in half with the card envelope unblemished, the twat obviously posted it like that leaving me to claim insurance, so the postmans knock however a welcome one still is met with some anxiety. See ya on Friday Kirsty and I,ll tell y ou who it was. Regards Kev

How many of you out there have been to a 21st, 18th, 40th or whatever birthday do and the DJ says " now we are going to have some Northern Soul" and then procedes to play "Third finger left hand" or "Nine times out of ten" and someone leans over to you and says the magical words "why aren,t you dancing ? I thought you were into Northern Soul" nuff said. Personally, I like all of it, however people like to categorise it, as long as its "soulfull" Northern, Crossover, Deep, Modern, "The Soul Scene" sounds good to me. Regards Kev

I stand corrected Jock, you,re right, Shotts was unique, it opitomised then, nearly 20 years ago what has become a topic for debate these days, a venue that encourages cheaper underplayed or unplayed gems to be brought to the fore to stand alongside the quality rare tunes aswell. Lowton springs to mind as having a similar mindset. Just ordered USB this morning so hopefully will be able to contribute to the great stuff that the guys, yourself included have been posting. Hope to see ya at the Wilton mate. Kev.

Heard A Record Thats Worse Than The Carstairs
Kev Cane replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Sorry Pete, but when I saw the Title of the thread I thought it was a wind up, I know that music is a personal thing but "It Really Hurts Me Girl" is one of the most gut wrenching peices of soul you could ever want to hear, one of those records where category ( northern, crossover, 70,s deep) doesn,t come into it, just an awesome SOUL moment. Just a heartfelt opinion mate thats all. Kev -
The Larry Marks at 20 quid is an absolute snip Shep Kev
-
Paul Mooney, a man with impeccable taste in REAL soul music and a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Regards Kev
-
Hi Jock Hi Joan, correct me if I am wrong but was it our mate Ady Harley who was the guy responsible for airing this gem at Shotts. Kev

From the "Communication" album Bobby "The Master" Womacks absolutely sublime" Monologue", starts with Bobby talking about how he went to a record company to audition for the label, and basically when he gets through "Doing my thing" you could hear a pin drop the President then says " I like you and I,m not saying you can,t sing" and as they all started to leave the conference table "but you,re not commercial" Bobby basically then says "f--k you now I,m gonna sing something I wanna sing" and then procedes singing "Close to you", I know its a standard but The Man absolutely tears it apart. The intro gets hold of you then the man as nearly always DELIVERS. Kev

I love this aswell, you,re right, written, produced and arranged by our hero and you may have a point, I have got it on right now and if it aint him someone is doing a great job of sounding like him, I wonder if someone out there like Boba can put the record straight. Kev

I forgot to mention " I just wanted to make her happy" from the "Fully exposed" album.

Great artist, producer, writer and aranger, defo one of my favourite men in the business. Loads of scope to pick fave tunes from, here,s mine:- From " Ode to my lady" album " Just another day", "Talk to me", his rendition of "The way we were" and saving the best till last, the incredible ballad "Since I found you everythings alright" ( Jock, if you are going to put sound clips on please put this on). From the "In tune" album, a track "Bully Boy" made me aware of " Easy does it" From the "Fully exposed" album "Can.t get ready for losing you" ( deserves plays) and finally the B side of " Shake it shake it " "We can make it" Kev

Theres a few that spring to mind Alan for different reasons, for the reason that it is so bloody good The Young Brothers "Baby" on Soul Power and for the reason that it is so bloody good and only a cheapie where the DJ has had the vision and balls to play it The Enchanted Five " Have you ever" on CVS and The C. O. D,S "Pretty Baby" on Kellmac. There are thousands of top quality tunes out there that cost nowt and deserve to be played, lets hear em. Kev
-
Sam Dees "After All". If the missus left you and you stuck this on, it would either sort you out or finish you off Mark Kev
-
Agreed, Kirsty has great taste in music, what do folk out there think of the other side, personally I think it aint that far away from perfection. ( Get yourself together) Kev
