  1. Silly me, honestly didn,t know, I have just been playing the one I have had for 30 years off the "Bustin out" album. Great chance of us going to the Orwell now Adam as Steve has pulled the Coachman. Speak soon Kev

  3. Love this theme Paul, its a huge part of the black experience, I think I heard or read it termed as PROTEST music somewhere, examples being in particular:- Norman Whitfields psychadelic era stuff "Ball of confusion" "Cloud nine" and "Message from a Black man" and "Smilin Faces" particularly brilliantly done by the Temps also "Ship ahoy" from the Ojays and as illustrated by Jock on here they don,t come any more politically motivated than Gil Scott Heron, one to add from him is the brilliant "B Movie" which tears to bits his favourite target Ronald Reagan. Also worthy of a mention is Johnny Little,s "Gonna get that boat" on Minit. Kev
  4. Good point Kev, we should also take into consideration that at the time Black music in general wasn,t accepted by the large majority in the U.S.A so consequently most of the music we love was aimed at the black community with the artists aspiring hopefully for a local hit, hence giving it that honest, raw and recordrd in a tin can appeal which gives it that special ingredient that I asume we all love. Kev
  5. Straight 10, in everyones top 10 Binsey Kev
  6. There were some great writing teams out there at the time who consistently churned out the music we love, examples being :- Wylie/ Hester Gamble/Huff Mcfadden/Whitehead Holland/Dozier/Holland Hutson/Hawkins Whitfield/Strong Callier/Stepney Hayes/Porter all of the above wrote a number of gems, I am sure someone can compile another list of teams, then you have the likes of Leon Ware, Frankie Beverley, Marvin Gay, Smokey Robinson and the list goes on, but I am going to plump for the aforementioned SAM DEES as (twist my arm) my fave Kev
  7. Hi Rob, remember the Sam Dees night well, a great "soul moment", someone else I would love to see in a more intimate environment would be Phil Perry, for those who were there at Prestatyn, who could ever forget his set on the Saturday afternoon in the Modern room, absolutely mind blowing uptempo numbers, mid-tempo through to gut wrenching ballads the man handled everything like the pro he is. Kev
  8. Updated, Big D still a bargain though for someone Kev
  9. Jim, would never argue anybodies preference on this one, it is a genuine close call, I love both of em, but aswell as the more uptempo tracks on "Born Free" the killer ballads "Love is everywhere", "I wish it could be me", "Don,t go" and especially "I believe in love" add the weight to sway it for me, but thats IMHO, Regards Kev

  12. Never gone out of my way to actually collect a certain label but I have about 25 records on the Carnival label, bought every one of them cos I thought they were good in their own right so it shows IMHO the depth in quality on the label, the Manhattans and Lee Williams and Cymbals stuff in particular are all absolute gems, Volt is another label where I find I have a lot of stuff on, Dramatics, Newcomers, Emotions and Mad Lads to name but a few to contribute great Soul music. Kev
  13. While we are on the subject, what a fookin record, typical cheap record that should be played but suffers from the rarity syndrome, ideal mid-tempo shuffler. gonna get it on the deck now. Kev

  25. I don,t think the scene in the main is as dance driven as it used to be Mark, over the last few years I have been to many nites where the floor is not that busy but feedback says that people have still had a hell of a nite, take the D.D.A at Lowton for example, DJ,s are told to enjoy themselves, have fun and don,t worry about the dancefloor, records are applauded by people in their seats aswell as on the floor, I have to admit though there are some sounds that make impossible to remain seated.
