  1. Here here Richard, its got the whole package, you,ve summed it up perfect, another one that will always stay with me although different again from Jackey Beavers the harmoniously perfect Magnetics "Count the days" Sable another back of the neck job. Kev
  2. People who wouldn,t know a SOUL record if it hit them straight in the ears and only respond to records when certain big name DJ,s play them while all along they have heard the same record on many occasions but played by lesser known individuals, you know the scenario "have you heard that record that so and so is playing now f-----g brill isn,t it" "hold on a minute mate, so and so has been playing it and you haven,t mentioned it before now" Kev
  3. Two unissued tracks spring to mind straight away, both from the Temps, "Forever in my heart" and IMHO the far superior version of "Angel Doll" Regards Kev
  4. Would be hard to disagree with that Mark but another Invitations record that runs it close is "Living together is keeping us apart" the intro is Philly production at its best but ironically I think its because of its long intro no matter how good that has hindered it as a dancefloor winner cos after the intro Lew Kirton comes in on top form, great record, another great record but with the same problems as above The Four Flights "All I want is you" on Almeria. Kev
  5. Was actually going to mention "Jealous kinda fella" boba where he "punched that guy last night" I think in this day and age old Garland would have been issued with an ASBO. Kev
  6. Skullsnaps-I,m your pimp-GSF and may I say, what a great record. Kev
  7. Beat me to the punch on that one Tony, but on second thoughts does it count cos his real name is Clyde Wilson ? Kev
  8. Albert Jones has been a popular record in the NE for a lot of years Steve and IMHO nearly all the copies in the country are up here although in about 20 years or so you could count on one hand How many times its been played out at venues, rarely comes up for sale either so getting one is an achievment in itself, mind if you if you have one or get one turn it over "Reflections" is an absolute treat. Kev
  9. First of all happy New Year to everyone, the records I am going to mention as tips really echo my wishes cos I think some of the choices are known but as we all know unfortunately suffer from the rarity thing Four Sonics-Easier said than done-Sport IMHO as good as anything out there, has been getting plays in the NE for years but demands wider acclaim The Esquires-Listen to me-Capitol Cheap as chips x-over with a group vocal performance to rival anything The Artistics-You left me-Brunswick Apply the above statement for this aswell, flip to the better known "Lonely old world" but this blows it away. The Performers-Little Angel-Sir Graham A tad more expensive than the previous 3 I know but this little gem has been getting plays via Mick and Mo and seems to be catching on. I think Sean mentioned album tracks so heres a few that keep me company at home:- David Ruffin-Until we said goodbye-Everythings coming up love LP THE man in overdrive, not to be missed. 9th Creation-Bionic Love Affair-Prelude "Reaching for the top" LP fantastic 70,s group mover, a couple of killer ballads aswell for the music room Bill Brandon-Baby love is a two way street-Prelude LP Great mid-tempo record also 3 incredible ballads Willie Hutch-Can,t get ready for losing you-Motown "Fully Exposed" LP Apply the above statement to this I apologise if any of the above LP tracks have been issued on 7 inch, then I am unaware, but they are worth getting anyway. Good topic this, lets hope that some of the contributions bear fruit or strike a chord in the coming year. Best Regards Kev
  10. Anyone out there got a copy of the following for sale Donny Beaumont-Don,t make me go now-Mercury Please PM me if there is the possibility Kev
  11. Mixed bag really Richard, just killing time before last shift before Chrimbo, :- PHD,s-Swells my desire-Lamp Leon Ware-Musical Massage-Motown (whole album) Herman George-What have you got-Bet Chuck Ray-I don,t mind-Tamboo Archie Bell-Don,t let love get you down-P.I Terry Callier-Just as long as we,re in love-(clip on here) Dells ( " " " " )-Cadet (the winner by a mile) Maxine Brown-Let me give you my loving-Wand and still playing Kev
  12. This will have its day in the sun, no doubt about it, and as far as quality goes its right up there with Chuck Holiday, Jock Mitchell and Don Gardner which is saying something. Could be one of those that disappears soon and £160 will be considered a steal. (IMHO) Kev
  13. Yeah, spot on, Berry Gordy was interested in one thing and one thing only "the mean green" and thats why him and the committee who sat in on sessions and gave the thumbs up or down will have given this a huge thumbs up (cos it had massive selling potential to the masses) and the thumbs down to what we think are gems like The Temptations "Angel Doll" and "Forever in my heart" cos ultra soulfull stuff was not potential million seller material. Kev
  14. Missed the Dells in 1997 I think it was cos I was in Corfu on holiday and oh how my mates remind me of the fact to this day, so it has to be Phil Perry in the Modern room at Prestatyn 2004 on the Saturday afternoon, what a performance, ballads, mid-tempo the lot. Great Soulfull performance from a real SOUL man, if you are looking in Rob Wigley, get him booked, there would be plenty of interest from the North East. Kev
  15. Great Idea Joan, only reason I look on this section and to be honest its the reason you would go somewhere that you weren,t familiar with if playlists were appealing Kev
  16. How goes it Graham, yeah remember when it was brand new, still holds up today as good as anything, are you there on Saturday night ? Kev
  17. Silly me, honestly didn,t know, I have just been playing the one I have had for 30 years off the "Bustin out" album. Great chance of us going to the Orwell now Adam as Steve has pulled the Coachman. Speak soon Kev
  18. Great pick Adam, love it aswell, heres a few that I like 9TH Creation-Bionic love affair-Prelude Notations-There I go-Gemigo Bill Brandon-Baby, love is a two way street-Prelude Greg Perry-Next time I see you-Casablanca Willie Hutch-Can,t get ready for losing you-Motown Freddie Hughes-We gotta keep on-Wand Millie Jackson-Something bout cha-Spring Bobby Womack-Come l amore-UA Leroy Hutson-Don,t let it get next to you-UA Rick James-Fool on the street-Gordy Bobby Womack-Give it up-Arista Kev
  19. Love this theme Paul, its a huge part of the black experience, I think I heard or read it termed as PROTEST music somewhere, examples being in particular:- Norman Whitfields psychadelic era stuff "Ball of confusion" "Cloud nine" and "Message from a Black man" and "Smilin Faces" particularly brilliantly done by the Temps also "Ship ahoy" from the Ojays and as illustrated by Jock on here they don,t come any more politically motivated than Gil Scott Heron, one to add from him is the brilliant "B Movie" which tears to bits his favourite target Ronald Reagan. Also worthy of a mention is Johnny Little,s "Gonna get that boat" on Minit. Kev
  20. Good point Kev, we should also take into consideration that at the time Black music in general wasn,t accepted by the large majority in the U.S.A so consequently most of the music we love was aimed at the black community with the artists aspiring hopefully for a local hit, hence giving it that honest, raw and recordrd in a tin can appeal which gives it that special ingredient that I asume we all love. Kev
  21. Straight 10, in everyones top 10 Binsey Kev
  22. There were some great writing teams out there at the time who consistently churned out the music we love, examples being :- Wylie/ Hester Gamble/Huff Mcfadden/Whitehead Holland/Dozier/Holland Hutson/Hawkins Whitfield/Strong Callier/Stepney Hayes/Porter all of the above wrote a number of gems, I am sure someone can compile another list of teams, then you have the likes of Leon Ware, Frankie Beverley, Marvin Gay, Smokey Robinson and the list goes on, but I am going to plump for the aforementioned SAM DEES as (twist my arm) my fave Kev
  23. Hi Rob, remember the Sam Dees night well, a great "soul moment", someone else I would love to see in a more intimate environment would be Phil Perry, for those who were there at Prestatyn, who could ever forget his set on the Saturday afternoon in the Modern room, absolutely mind blowing uptempo numbers, mid-tempo through to gut wrenching ballads the man handled everything like the pro he is. Kev
  24. Updated, Big D still a bargain though for someone Kev
  25. Jim, would never argue anybodies preference on this one, it is a genuine close call, I love both of em, but aswell as the more uptempo tracks on "Born Free" the killer ballads "Love is everywhere", "I wish it could be me", "Don,t go" and especially "I believe in love" add the weight to sway it for me, but thats IMHO, Regards Kev
