  1. Rather Awesome Kev
  2. Thanks Kris Kev
  3. Hello everyone Any Idea on the value of the Skullsnaps Album on GSF (Brown issue) Cheers Kev
  4. Top top group Malc, the above has always been popular up here in the NE but "People want music" just edges it which is saying something however, as Paul has mentioned, the long takes on "Heaven is only" and "Somebody,s got to win" are records that are must haves for all soul fans, also "If somebody cares", another sublime ballad, yes indeed, what a group. Kev
  5. Bang on ! Venues like Just Soul and Room With A View (formerly DDA) are testament to this theory, and incidentally promoted by guys who could play the so called "big tunes" if they wished but prefer to search the vaults of great soul music, most of which are very accessable. Kev
  6. They are all great Mike and to be honest until now The Jaedes was the only one I didn,t know, well its just blown me away, I would have said beforehand The Winstons but Jaedes gets the nod. Kev
  7. Don,t know if he is still doing it but check Times Square Records out in Riverdale, North Bronx, the guy is called Lou Silvani, you would have to ring him or email him first to let him know you are coming, don,t mess his filing system up though or he will throw you out. Kev
  8. Right with you there Joan, boundless enthusiasm and great taste, ask him for a tape and it was there the next week. Kev
  9. Like a dog with a bone me at the moment, thanks for the input everyone, tried doing that Chalky but I am still convinced he was moonlighting, no one actually come up with a definite no yet, Also it was mentioned earlier that why would he do it considering that at the time he was one of the best known R&B singers at the time. On reflection, I don,t think Berry Gordy paid mega money to everyone at the time, possibly Smokey and Miss Ross, also consider that Groovesville had a version of "Still in my heart" by Ruffin in the can, and at the time he did that he must have been still connected to Motown, so I think he has form. Kev
  10. Another example of a guy who draws comparison is William "Wee Gee" Howard, but like Ruffin, he has certain traits in his voice and delivery that set him apart from the imitators. Kev
  11. Was hoping you would get involved Boba, seems like we will never get to know for defo, see what you say about the imitation thing and its a probably a fact that the 2 most imitated sounds are the Temps and the Impressions, only thing is I know when I am listening to Curtis and when I am not no matter how good the imitation is, same goes for Ruffin, I know when I am listening to him and when he is being imitated, this time though its different. Kev
  12. Some very good points there indeed, but its his love of the green and his renowned irrational and unpredictable behaviour that for me add to the conspiracy that for a one off payment perhaps, he may have thought why not, like I said in my original post, there are too many examples in the delivery of Ruffin only traits that give it away. Great contributions so far , anyone else have any thoughts or insight on this. Kev
  13. Cracking contribution, thanks for that, love these kind of stories, something really must have p----d Edwin there. Kev
  14. Go to next post and see what you think, if this isn,t David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks then its Paul Whitehouse doing what he does best. Kev
  15. Thanks for the feedback everyone, Kris,s last post there really makes me even more curious, the fact he was involved with them officially. Kev
  16. This has to be Edwin Starr on lead vocals, anyone confirm, while we are on the subject, its not half bad IMHO Kev MP3 file removed by site, as per house rules
  17. Great show, really enjoyed it, was the Dramatics-Your love was strange, a different take cos it sounded slightly shorter than the Volt 45 I have. well done lads Kev
  18. Haven,t seen it yet Paul but defo trust your take on these things, sadly I reckon as you have stated that whenever the scene comes under the spotlight the incorrect perception is always displayed. So, it will carry on that, whenever you go to a birthday bash or an engagement do etc, and the DJ says "and now for some northern soul" and then proceeds to play "Nine times out of ten" and "3rd finger left hand", someone will turn to you and say "you are into all this stuff aren,t you", well we know where they are getting their assumptions from again. Kev
  19. Anyone out there got Smokey Robinson "Here I go again" and "Baby Baby don,t cry" for sale Please PM If you can help Kev
  20. In the brilliant comedy classic "Animal House" the group that play at the infamous Toga party are Otis Day and The Knights, one of the members is called Melvin Britt, I wonder ? Kev
  21. Somebody buy the Jo Ann Garrett-One Woman-Duo, everybody goes on about Ella Woods and Ty Karim, great records I know but this is right up there, and all for £25 Kev
  22. Never mind Sam Dees, what if little John Dees, one of the funniest things I have ever heard mate after John passed out as you stated. Kev
  23. Phil Perry, formerly of the Montclairs was awesome at Prestatyn in 2004, his session in the Modern room on the saturday afternoon will stay with me forever, what a performer Kev
  24. Happy New Year Brett, rarest I have I think is Nathan Williams-What Price-UA, have read conflicting opinions on which one is rarer, the UA or Lime, another one that I am curious about is The Voice Masters-Two Lovers-Frisco, not that well known, and I have never seen it in a sales box (maybe not looking hard enough) Got mine before the Internet and it took me 10 years to get one (tried prising Craig Butlers off him) Kev
  25. Speaking in general terms really, the original post just prodded a nerve with regards to the Don Covay opinion that I have, wasn,t really focusing on the Elton John situation, just I can,t remember Rod Stewart coming on the mainstream thanking Bobby Womack for "Don,t you think I,m sexy" backing track which he took from "If you want my love", there are other examples, perhaps Elton was to be credited with championing soul music, but in general terms soul music has been exploited without enough specific credit being given back. In hindsight maybe should have kept away from the Elton situation. Kev
