  1. Great set, Willie Brown, Roy Lee Johnson, great records Kev
  2. Remember the version Rob Marriot used to play Chalky, back in the early 90,s, I,ve played United Four version and am sure Robs was different, the intro was better, asked Chris about it a couple of years ago but I have forgotten what he told me it wasn,t the United Four, can anyone remember who it was, he put it on tape for me but the listing went years ago Kev
  3. Deep, ballads, sweet, thats what I like to buy gareth, I reckon its a bottomless pit, and I mean quality wise aswell, great thing is, you can confine this scene to your own four walls and converse with collectors with the same interest, hear loads of stuff every week that I don,t know and love, plus it cuts out all the political and egotistical bollocks that goes on at most places Kev
  4. Agree Joan, I think someones already touched on it (Gareth I think) but, play a record cos its bloody good, not because its funk or rare or r&B cos thats seen to be hip or cutting edge or the supposed future and answer to everything, we,ve all heard DJ,s play a record for the sake of it cos its rare for rares sake and its been a heap of shite. Theres loads of quality out there in all genres, quality being the buzz word instead of being obsessed with whats the supposedly trendy way to go. Kev
  5. Somebody buy Charles Beverley, record of the list, mid-tempo crossover at its awesome best Kev
  6. Better selling point would have been his album only version of the casanova Two "We Gotta Keep On" Gav but still agree with tracks you mention, and yes, the whole set is essential Kev
  7. Thanks Dave, cuts me in half every time Kev
  8. Crack on Dave and please post Jerry,s version up, great versions posted up by Munchkin but, for my money, Jerry,s version is the Daddy, Jock put it on tape for me about 25 years ago and I have been totally hooked ever since. Kev
  9. Hi Nev, good post, on a personal stand, I like the lot, as long as its soulfull, most of the stuff I buy possibly wouldn,t be played at the majority of venues, it was the Audrey Royal Nev, and to be honest, it wasn,t a case of "not my cuppa Tea" he took it on a permanent lease, like I do with some of his stuff, If you take the Skullsnaps LP on GSF,a lot of that funk, I can tell you its one of the most played sets in my house, funk, but darn soulfull aswell. Kev
  10. The mould seems to have been set Matt, similar discussion on another thread at the moment but it seems only a certain set of DJ,s can be innovative and creative in compiling their sets cos its this certain set who influence what is supposedly right to be played, a lesser known DJ or collector can get up there and play away from the norm and accepted (which you rightly hint at) and the vast majority of punters won,t blink an eyelid ie theres hardly any "whats this, its fookin brilliant, never heard it before", but, somebody out of the certain set of DJ,s gets up and plays the exact same record or records, then theres a stampede to find out what it is, the fickleness of the scene prevents fresh DJ,s with fresh playlists from prospering, hence the same repetitive playlists. Just an opinion by the way Kev
  11. The "Butch is playing it" syndrome has been with us for the best part of 25 years Nev. Kev
  12. Agree Chalky, nostalgia rules the waves, been well documented on here, but as you say, it doesn,t look like dying off any time soon Kev
  13. Hi Nev, quality as in not compromising soul content, subjective I know, but its just the way I see it, heard a few sets which included the "funky edge" stuff, quite a bit of it didn,t do it for me, some was good, like I said, subjective but a good subject matter, worth debating. Best Regards Kev
  14. Agree 100% Joan, the need to be alternative has definitely interfered with quality, some of its good, but a lot of it like you say aint good enough, its just alternative Kev
  15. Great statement, happens a lot in the NE, scratching each others backs while keeping the ego,s topped up. Kev
  16. Always loved this Dave, first heard it on a Channel 4 documentary in the early 80,s taped it on VHS, still got the tape.Great shout, BTW, did you get CD, put 1st class stamp on it. Kev
  17. Good advice Roburt, reccommend strongly, from the "Born Free" set by the Hesitations "We Can Do It", brilliant IMHO Kev
  18. Tremendous diversity and quality once again, train tickets already secured for August 12th Kev
  19. Fantastic record, don,t know about being a beat ballad though, just an opinion though Kev
  20. Cheers Bob, no need to hunt for the INS 45 now, disappointed in a way, was looking forward to hearing a longer take of a truly sensational soul record Kev
  21. Have and love Mellow Moods, Little Dooley and Vibrations, anything else on the label in the same league as those 3 Kev
  22. With respect to Tony Steve, doesn,t the inclusion of Ska, Reggae and Rockabilly etc detract from a soul collection Kev
  23. Cheapie on Arctic, as good as anything she,s done IMHO, "Half A Love" Kev
  24. Agree Mike, since Refo was stopped, this is by far the best way to hear stuff that floats your boat, its a bottomless pit I reckon that we pull from if you like all aspacts of this great music, can honestly say, most days I hear something new that I like, CD swap has defo had a massive impact on collecting. Kev
