  1. Aretha, Shirley Brown, Laura Lee, Gladys Knight, Linda Jones, she's up there for me with the other legends I have mentioned Kev
  2. Sorry, but if someone says they love soul, then says they don,t like Linda Jones, then I am out of any further conversation Kev
  3. Didn,t know the Kim Tolliver Dave, wow, shades of Laura Lee, "Guess who I saw today" or the full length "Since I fell for you" made my day mate, the Lady Margo is another gem that you put on a CD, not that technical myself, but hearing them 2 belters has given me the urge to listen to The New Births album version of "Wildflower" Cheers Dave Kev
  4. Place him in the same bracket as Steve Mancha, Melvin Davis and JJ Barnes Liam. Love every single one of em. Difficult to answer the question, in a hypothetical situation you can only base an opinion around similar artists and how they turned out. Using the examples I have, you would have to say he would have struggled to make a good living out of a recording career as the others did struggle. These guys are our heroes, but, we are not in the majority, and as a result wouldn,t be able to create a demand for the promotion from the record companies that would ensure there was a feasible market to sell their brilliant (to us) talents. Its sad, but its the reality, we hear our favourite artists singing, and they stir up feelings that are incredible, then we have to listen to the drivel that is served up today and watch Simon Cowell et al giving the thumbs up or down to the collection of Karaoke wannabees that are deemed the stars of tomorrow, at that, think I'll nip off to play "Beautiful Feeling" and wind myself up even more Kev
  5. Grab the Harold Tyler at that price someone, been under the radar too long, won't be that price forever, great record Kev

  11. Same as Horse and Groom Sunday Chillout John, as Mick suggests, they could fetch that up to the NE, I,d love that, but people would have to travel, cos it wouldn,t happen up here, we tried back in 2001 at The Cumby Arms, was OK for a couple of years, but pressure to play same old same old disillusioned us so we folded it. Now everyone is a DJ/Promoter with their own do. The lads at Donny have it sussed, and a great logistic advantage, its only an hour away from nearly everywhere on the train, diverse playlists everytime, ballads, mid-tempo, 60,s, 70,s 80,s, it don,t matter, it has to be soulful though Kev
  12. My question to anyone knocking what other people are playing (no matter where) would be, "write down on a bit of paper what you think should be played, giving specific examples" simple really, its easy for people to come out and have a go, and go on about the "so called" good old days and good old boys. Personally speaking its the "same 200 record" venues that piss me off, and we are awash with those up here in the NE, to be quite honest, learnt and heard more (soul wise) from CD swaps with lads on here, a lot of them don't really go anywhere but are as sharp as a tack when looking for and buying soul records, all tempo,s and era,s included, like you say Dave, theres loads of great collections up here that have left the Wigan days for dead and moved on big style. Soul collectors and lovers are a lot more aware nowadays about the real stuff that was deemed not compatible in the so called "golden era,s". Love buying and selling still today, in fact even more so, and don,t give a toss if people don,t like or want to hear what I do. In my opinion, there ain,t enough up here in the NE who like all things soulful to maintain a regular class venue. Too much pigeon holing still. The soul room in your own home is as good as it will ever get up here Kev

  21. Bang on about the NE Steve, been going to a great Soul Nite/Day/Weekend for ages now though, my own record room, keep an eye out on whats for sale, spread your search as wide or as small as you like, spend as much or as little as you like on music you haven,t heard from all of the era,s and genres you mention that will bring you to your knees, todays playlist includes Donald byrd "Flight time" Fontella Bass, "I,m leaving the choice to you" James Brown "Georgia on my mind" Supremes and Four Tops "Lets make love now" a purchase I have just made by the Devilles "One more time" being a very basic recording from 1970 featuring a young Ronnie McNeir, the flip ain,t half good to, Wilburt Longmire "Good Morning" Ernie Johnson "You,re about to succeed" fantastic pleading ballad where the postage was more than the record. Will have a break later to spend time with the family, when things settle and the lap top and XBox live are unleashed elsewhere in the house, I will resume, god knows what the playlist will be then but I will be accompanied by a bottle of wine, the playlist will be diverse, the cost of the items variable, but in the mish mash of it all it won,t matter, cos I will be having a ball, no bullshit, no ego,s, just me and music to me that is from the gods. The scene (whatever that is or was) means nowt to me, its the music of my choice, and was probably never intended for the likes of me when created. Really enjoyed reading the article, hope you and your family are well Best Kev
  22. Really glad you posted this Dave, SCRB is incredible and right up there in most top tens but I have always thought this is awesome, remember also the great comedy film "National Lampoons Animal House" the group who play at the Toga Party and who are playing in that hilarious scene when John Belushi et al turn up at the non whites diner Otis Daye and The Knights, if you look at the credits, Melvin Britt is in them. Kev
