  3. Yesterday I played 'Our love will grow' at a collectors night much to the delight of my fellow anoraks over here. I imagine there were a lot of General's discs on the decks this weekend, and many, many feet hitting the dancefloor to them all over the world...what an amazing thought!?

A strong candidate for 'Artist of the Week' on here

Yep, playing that @ 3.00pm Dave. Also I was going through stuff and got to Harrison Kennedy's "I'm In Love Darling" which sounds like it's actually Norman on lead! Decided to save it for a week or two to prevent any confusion but I'd swear that it's actually the General.......

I seem to be doing these mini-tribute shows all the bloody time these days - Luther, Levi, Michael and now the general. Sad times.....

And I'll second the 'Artist of the Week' nomination.

    Ian D

  4. OK, a Normal 'General' Johnson Original Mastercuts mini-tribute coming up LIVE @ 2.00pm today.........

This week, another one of our heroes, Norman 'General' Johnson from the Showmen and Chairmen Of The Board passed away so naturally I'll be doing my level best to do a 'lil Original Mastercuts tribute to one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in Soul Music history. If you have a dry eye by the end of the show you won't be the only one 'cos this guy was one of the soundtracks to my youth. R.I.P. Norman. We love ya.

The Original Mastercuts Show with Ian Dewhirst LIVE this Sunday 17th October 2010 between 2.00-4.00pm on everyone's favourite Soul station www.starpointradio.com.

  5. Well, it's been a pretty heavy week one way and another.

The Chairmen Of The Board and General Johnson were very much the soundtrack to my youth in the early 70's and I'm blessed to still be working with their music some 40 years later.

As per usual, when something like this happens, I go into 're-listen' mode and re-discover all the quality and nuances of the music that inspired me as I was growing up.

Norman 'General' Johnson is 100% absolutely up their with the greats - certainly one of the most distinctive vocalists in Soul music history. Plus he spanned a career that lasted 50 years which is incredible. To think he's been knocking 'em dead on the Beach Music scene for the last 20 years is just brilliant and underlines his durability and appeal to all ages.

So obviously I'm gonna do a General Johnson tribute on this Sunday's LIVE Original Mastercuts show, Sunday afternoon 2.00-4.00pm on www.starpointradio.com. I'll be slipping in all stages of his career from the mid 60's to the mid 00's and unleashing an exclusive killer re-edit on one of his late 70's underheard killers. This one's for Norman.

And yes. Ignore any sceptics. "Bless Your Heart" is one of the greatest Soul records ever made.

    Ian D

  6. Unbelievable............whats really sad is that no one thought it viable to bring over Chairmen Of The Board as a live act to any of the larger events over here......Id love to have seen them........Its not much fun being a Soul Fan at the moment what with Solomon Burke as well the other day....

    RIP General.

I was in talks a couple of months ago to bring a across a whole Invictus/Hot Wax package with Freda Payne/C.O.T.B/Honey Cone and the Holland brothers but, as always, money and logistics were proving problematic. A major shame.

    Ian D

  7. Excellent album - just hope there'll be a Volume 2.!

Great stuff Steve. It's a f*ckin' KILLER album and it seems to be selling around the world and on a number of different scenes. This is the album of choice for the guys in the office and it's been on constant rotation this week and I've gotta say it really holds up to repeated plays. I've listened to it a zillion times and still get elated every time I hear it. A work of art and I couldn't be happier that we've found a huge audience with this release. Great stuff!

You'll be pleased to know that Volume 2 is already on the drawing board.......

    Ian D

  8. As a 'music aficionado', I am eagerly anticipating having my next sh*t more than I am anticipating this CD. :D

Unfortunately you're the 'wrong type' of aficionado for this album Pete. :D

Luckily that hasn't harmed it's commercial success. :D

Best of luck with your next Sh*t by the way. Hope everything's hunky dory in that department. :hatsoff2:

    Ian D

  9. The original was good , but this remix is just ................ awesome !!

Agree with you on The O'Jays remix - it will be a future monster .

    Malc

You should hear the Larry Sanders rework of Jean Carn's "If You Wanna Go Back" too Malc 'cos that's another beauty. The more creative of some of these re-edits really allow the tracks to breath so that's the beauty of 'em IMO. I'm currently trying to sort out a Philly International Re-Edits comp for the 40 anniversary of P.I. next year, so hopefully I'll be able to get the best of the re-edits out there soon fingers crossed......

    Ian D

  10. Thanks for the file Ian ..... . how gooooood is that !!

Looks like I am on my way to being a cosmic convert  consider

    Malc

Yep. Just f*ckin' GLORIOUS isn't it? The crazy thing is that it always was a great record but at the time it was considered to be more of a slowy 'cos it had a shuffle kinda beat so it was never really played at the height of the night. Occasionally it may have been slipped in at the end of the night in a smoochy kinda slot but it was never a 'height of the night' track.

Now it is. It's only one week old and I can guarantee it's a future monster. It's exactly right for today's dancefloors. It's only taken 30 odd years LOL....

OK, the BRILLIANT Greymatter Re-Edit of Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Easy Money" is zinging it's way over to you now. This is just the tip of the iceberg mate. I'm a believer.......

    Ian D

  11. You're working too hard. yes got those but you said you were going to send anothr half dozen when your stocks were replenished.

Not had those, but then again I wouldn't because you forgot all about them didn't you. Too much Ibiza sun and ... erm well ... whatever elase goes on in Ibiza methinks.

Will leave that with you my friend

    Ciao as Tom would say

    Steve

Oh, OK then. Phew. I thought you hadn't received any for a moment. No.84 today which is GREAT believe it or not!

    Ian D

  12. Seems Tom has many other things up his sleeve too. "A Tom Moulton Mix" Volume 2 is on the cards and will feature some unusual (ror Tom fans anyway) stuff. There may also be another "Motown Box" Vol 2 which, although not entirely remixes, does see Tom adding his touch to stereo mixes of previously mono only releases. He's also working on an album of Phil-La of Soul releases, one of which I mentioned previously but still can't let the cat out of the bag. Needless to say that there is a cracking beat ballad on the label from 1967 which may at least give you a clue. Answers on a postcard or just post below and I'll let you into the secret. Hahahaha

    Steve

Didja get your copies OK Steve?

    Ian D

  13. Cosmic Disco ? Whaddyou talkin' 'bout Willis ?

I would be grateful if you will explain this to an old man Young Foggy :D

Seriously , well done to all concerned :D

    Malc

Cosmic Disco is basically spacy dance music which appeals to a new breed of 30+ Disco trainspotters who generally wear beards and have unkempt hair. The top Cosmic Disco DJ's are people like Harvey, Theo Parrish and Todd Terje who release their own top sounds and re-edits on custom-made 12" bootlegs once they've broken them in the clubs. Top Cosmic Disco records are often covered-up and the originals end-up being worth hundreds of pounds when they're finally uncovered. Does any of this sound familiar Malc? :glare:

The arch-deacon and one of the most collectible of the top Cosmic Disco icons is none other than Norman Whitfield, so the Cosmic Disco diggers have been busy finding obscure Nytro and Undisputed Truth album tracks which they then creatively re-edit to create Cosmic Disco masterpieces. However these guys dig for obscure Disco the same way we dig for Northern. They're doing some FANTASTIC stuff with some of the early Philly gear now. A top Cosmic Philly track would be Love Committee's "Just As Long As I Got You" 'cos that's just perfect and a production masterpiece. Some of the best re-edits I've ever heard in my life have come out of these scene. Grey Matter's re-edit of Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Easy Money" is a masterpiece as is Todd Terje's Tangoterje remix of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It". If you wanna hear a couple of 'em I'll be playing some killer re-edits of Marvin Gaye's "Praise You" and The O'Jays "Darlin' Darlin' Baby" (which is brilliant by the way) on the show today.

Start worrying. Some of 'em are digging into Northern now. It won't be long before you hear a Saxie Russell re-edit at your local Cosmic Disco hangout Malc!

    Ian D :D

  14. Just like to congratulate Mr Dewhirst & all the others involved on the album entering the UK compilation charts.

Also to let everyone know that the album is available on amazon for under £7 including free next day delivery.

Well done everybody & bring on volume 2.

Yep Martin, it's pretty gratifying to know that there's a huge audience for 40 year old material in 2010. Kinda makes it all worthwhile. I always had "Philly Re-Grooved" down as a 'specialist' release at best but then I figured that Tom Moulton appeals to several different scenes - Northern, Modern, Disco, Re-Edit , Cosmic Disco etc, etc, so maybe if all those Moulton enthusiasts bought it at the same time then maybe we'd do OK.......

Most of all I'm pleased for Tom. He's kinda like us in his obsessiveness i.e. totally disfunctional. However he's also the living breathing expert on mixing great Soul and Dance records so I'm happy as hell that we've found a decent audience for his work. Just great stuff............

  15. i was on my travels last night , when the radio station ( Radio Sheffield ) the car radio was tuned into , played the TM remix pf Finishing Touch's " Second Best ( Is Never Enough ) " .

Just how good is that track ? I thought the original was good , but the remix is excellent .

Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy .

Well done to you and all concerned Ian

    Malc

Good! The radio promos working nicely around the country then! Glad ya like it Mike and Darryl.

    Best,

    Ian D

  16. The Dimitri album was great although not quite everything is as it seems there. Mr Moulton even had a helping hand in that! Ian's quite right in saying that the Philly Re-Grooved album will appeal to a slightly older crowd as it is just a little less commercial in its content. Personally, I can't fault any of the remixes but then again I'm slightly biased

I spoke to Tom the other evening and he was telling me about something he's working on at the moment (from 1967)... I can't say any more at the moment because he told me something just in passing that could lead to ...... well I just can't say at the moment. Watch this space though and enjoy Philly Re-Grooved.

    Steve

Oi! Don't hold back Steve....c'mon what's he working on now.......? :D

Oh, did I mention the sleeve notes by one Steve Handbury by the way.......? :(

    Ian D :D

  17. Just pre ordered this and A Cellarful Of Motown off Amazon for a total of £15.96 including p & p.

If the Dimitri From Paris Philly album is anything to go by (especially the long version of The Love I Lost,The Jacksons-Living Together and the Teddy remixes) the Tom Moulton one should be one to look forward to.

    Steve

Inspired choices Steve. "The Cellarfull Of Motown" is No.1 on the Amazon Pre-Release chart and "Philly Re-Grooved - The Tom Moulton Remixes" is No.2 so money well spent I reckon........

    Ian D

  18. Really looking forwards to this Ian. Used to think remixes of classics like this were best left alone but if done the right way they really do work.

The recent Dimitri from Paris Philly remixes proves this & I'm sure this will be just as good.

Many thanks for bringing this to the attention of Soul Sourcers & if & when you get round to the unreleased Philly & HDH stuff coming out you know your old mate will more than welcome any promo's to play out & push on here :-)))

LOL, I'm working on it Martin. Actually I think the Moulton project will probably appeal to SSers more than the Dimitri project as the material is slightly older for the most part. Plus Tom's just so good with strings.........

    Ian D

  19. Didn't a lot of this stuff get very limited or not 12" release ??

I have a 12" "Feel the need" that Sam had lifted the last few mins instrumental off it to play as a new mix instru, was told the 12" was never released, came on a plain yellow lable with no writing on it. Cost a fair few bucks too when i found one !!

This looks like a great album, can't wait to get it

Wonder if Chris King will get a mention at all :D:lol:

    Ian.

Well, Philly Groove pre-dated the 12" era, so all of the above were 7" and album releases only. However, Tom always wanted to get his hands on the tapes because he knew all the musicians anyway and knew what the quality of the recordings was like. Plus "This Is The House Where Love Died" was always one of his favourite-ever tunes so naturally he couldn't wait to get his hands on the original master tapes. If you like beautiful early Philly masterpieces with full orchestration, then this album's for you.

And Chris definitely hasn't been listed in the thankyou credits......
