  1. The thing I like about playlists, is that people are prepared to put their balls on the line by printing what they play. I ALWAYS check playlists, mainly out of general interest to see what's cooking for certain crowds but also radio-wise it's always interesting. I always release my radio playlists. If nothing else, it's a handy archive as to what I've played over the years and always accurately dated, so it's like a personal musical diary. But to hark back to some earlier posts on this thread, in my younger years (early 70's) playlists were incredibly exciting and, in my opinion, provided a lot of mystique to the scene. The Glories, the Sweets, the Tempos, the Tartans, Bob Relf, Moses Smith, the Wingate Love-In Strings, Bobby Treetop, Duke Browner...? Who were these people and why were people putting 'em in their ads? It suggested a scene that celebrated something different to the norm and it hooked me from the age of about 15 years old in 1970. Playlists gave me a major thirst to obtain more knowledge because I didn't recognise any of the records. Playlists were a huge part of attracting me to the scene. So I think they're cool. Ian D
  2. That's a great idea. I'm looking for some new areas for Backbeats and that could be a feasible one couldn't it? I'll give it some thought when I can squeeze a moment. I wouldn't mind having a few decent beach music comps myself......... Good thinking Soulfinger! Ian D
  3. Coming up LIVE @ 2.00pm. Join us LIVE in the Starpoint chatroom on the homepage www.starpointradio.com. Hope you can make it! Ian D
  4. Good 'cos I hate the Spooky & Sue version LOL. She's actually off key throughout the record. The Moments original for me every time - one of the truly great early Modern Soul anthems in my opinion...... Ian D

  6. It's good to know that you're in-tune with the current parlous state of record companies. These days the artists feel so sorry for us that they usually invite us out for a meal LOL... As it happens I've got a great 'lil private place around the corner that's full of impoverished actors and ex record company execs where you can get a full home-cooked Italian meal for under a tenner including drinks so lemme know when you're next in town... Ian D
  7. Most of it was new to me Mike. When I was digging around Jewel/Paula/Ronn in the 70's most of it was too 'raw' for me apart from the Montclairs, Tommie Young, Bobby Walls & Co and a few others. So I never even bothered with the Gospel output. So hearing this compilation has been a bit of a revelation. I never realised that Leroy Hutson and George Clinton were so involved with Gospel for a start. Some very interesting stuff on here. Dave and Greg did a superlative job compiling this. To think I've been sat on this repertoire for the last couple of years without realising the wealth of the catalogue is just embarassing LOL. Some really good input is coming in from a variety of sources on this and I think we'll score some serious radio plays in the next week or two, so it'll be interesting to see whether there's an appetite for this release. You're never too old to learn ay? Ian D
  8. I'll send you one Kris 'cos I don't think I sorted you out with your help on the 'Mod Life Crisis" album did I? A certain degree of personal irresponsibility and no time basically, so PM your address and I'll zap you one. Also, good timing 'cos something's coming up which is right in your arena..... Ian D

  10. Blimey, "Holy Spirit" has just turned up on this month's Uncut playlist! I'm hoping we get some support from some other areas on this release - Uncut, Mojo, The Word etc, etc. These areas can be really supportive for this type of release, so hopefully we'll get a well-rounded audience with this release............. https://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/wild-mercury-sound/the-23rd-uncut-playlist-of-2012 Ian D
  11. You and hundreds of others Pete. Those really were the days ay? Nip into Bradford for a couple of hours and come back with handfuls of brilliant records which are pretty much all worth hundreds of times what we paid for 'em back then. Can't believe we were so lucky really...... Ian D
  12. I wish you'd stop devaluing my collection Steve........ Ian D
  13. Hi Pete, PM me your address and I'll get one sent up to ya. Not actively involved with Manifesto so much these days but good mates with Mike Ritson so I'll sort one out........ Best, Ian

  15. I think your wig's safe for the moment Pete. I've never seen one. Ian D
  16. LOL, that's what I get for spending the weekend trawling though banking stuff! So much for multi-tasking ay...? Shit. I used to be good at this stuff LOL.... Ian D
  17. Yep. My mistake. Got the Sceptre thing the wrong way round. Of course "This Is The House" was their first record! Doh...... I wonder if the reason why First Choice never came out on PYE was because they switched to Philly Groove then? That would explain why it was on their UK Bell LP presumably....? Ian D
  18. Pye ay? Interesting. It was probably aligned with Ultra High Frequency which was also a Philly Groove production which came out on Sceptre in the U.S. as well. Ian D
  19. Yes, I guess it would Pete. The U.S. Sceptre release is a bit of a red herring really as it was a Philly Groove recording which would have come out on Bell in the UK. I don't why they switched to Sceptre for that one off but that preceded them signing to Warners and then Salsoul so they were obviously on their way out from Philly Groove....... Ian D
  20. LOL, Dewsbury. Which decade was that then? If it is "This Is The House (Where Love Died)" that surprises me. I wasn't aware that it was ever slated for a UK release. Mind you, I have a 20th Century UK acetate of R.B. Greaves "Let's Try It Again" that never came out either, so I guess anything's possible...... Ian D
  21. Yep, same here. I did loads of blind buying in the late 70's. I used to buy 2000 UK records a time for 2p each, then cream off the interesting stuff and then sell them on for 10p each! Most of the stock tended to be UK promos which were filling up the radio stations record libraries so they'd have annual culls and dump 1000's of records into certain shops or dealers around the UK. I had major hits of this kind of stuff in Nottingham, Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds and Harrogate from '77-'79 which included Ray Munnings, G.C. Cameron, Marva Hicks, Darlene Love, Paul Kendrick, Bo Cooper, Craig Pruess, Ruby Andrews and numerous others. In fact, one of my jobs this summer is to go through several shelves of the UK Soul stuff and remind me of what's there again...... Ian D
  22. Butch is in a great position, in that he can pretty much dictate immediate interest in any tune he plays because he's the top guy. He's probably got a couple of hundred others that he'll unleash in coming years - they'd be called 'secret weapons' on other scenes. He'll almost certainly have a 'may play' section in his box for these kind of tracks which he may debut for a variety of reasons - atmosphere, how many chin-strokers are there in the place, where in the world he's playing etc, etc. He arguably has a wider choice than most but still has to have the guts to play 'em. If people had never heard Lee Fields over a loud system in their lives and then they heard Butch play it, the immediate reaction would be that they'd want a copy. So most of those now have to be prised out of 70's collections, hence the price hike. Ian D
  23. Truer words were never spake Ivor. Records come in and out of fashion, especially after 45 years. The Soul City on Goodtime was mass imported in the early 70's and you could buy it easily for 25p like "Stanky (Get Funky)" - Billy Davis which no one wanted 'cos of the title and the fact it was common as muck and a soul pack record. Times sure change. I wonder if it's time to wheel out my original Champion copy of "Tainted Love" that Marc Almond taped from me and then went on to sell 34,000,000 copies around the world? Boy, Manship would have a field day with that ay? Ian D
  24. He's a great actor in the right roles for sure as his role as Tony Wilson proved in "24 Hour Party People" demonstrated - one of the better UK films of the last decade for sure. Funnily enough I bump into him all the time as Baby Cow are on the same floor as Demon so we share the same Cappacino machine LOL..... You must pop in and meet the luvvies next time you're in the smoke Jocko..... Ian D
