  1. For me CD's are essential. I've been collecting digital masters for the last 25 years as they're essential for my job. I like having physical copies of digital files for safety reasons as well as convenience. Also, so many digital files are shit, so I prefer to use properly mastered digital files from CD as the quality out-does everything else, especially if they've been mastered from the original tapes. I'm in a position now where I have pretty much managed to replicate pretty much everything I ever had on vinyl and tens of thousands more. It's actually easier and quicker for many companies to ring me and get a digital WAV file then it is for them to get one from their own vaults! Also, checking the prices of the CD comps I was doing in the early 90's (Mastercuts, Deep Beats etc), virtually all of 'em sell for a lot more then they ever have done previously. The Japanese P-Vine releases are the holy-grail for CD collectors these days...... Ian D
  2. Box set only Andy. That's the only way this configuration will ever be available. Ian D
  3. Wow. Straight in the Top 40 on the Amazon Vinyl chart! In between Pink & Fleetwood Mac LOL.... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/music/382540011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_m_h__1_3_last#2 Hope I've pressed enough! Ian D
  4. Yep, hoping to put 'em up tomorrow if I have time! Ian D
  5. OK, my first show back after an absence of 5 months due to moving home, crazy workload and other things. My heartfelt thanks go to Alan Champ who has maintained the show every week for the last 5 months and kept the brand going. Cheers Al. You’re a rock mate! From this point forward I’ll be doing the last Sunday of every month. I wish it could be more but work demands are keeping me busy, so I now need 3 weeks to get a show together. It’s hard work! But great work! On the show this week we’re highlighting some beautiful new remixes by John Morales, Ashley Beedle and 3 exclusives from the magnificent Mike Maurro. Add to that the usual Original Mastercuts selection of pure Soul killers and timeless classics and we have 2 hours of bliss. Hope you can join me! Plus rumour has it Alan and Carl and a couple of others will be down too, so it should be a full house! Six Million Steps Presents The Original Mastercuts Show LIVE with Ian Dewhirst between 2.00-4.00pm on Sunday 24th February 2013 on everyone’s favourite Soul station www.starpointradio.com. 6. OK, scrub that. I didn't realise the demo above was the other side! But still 2-3 known demos then (including the one on the You Tube clip)? Ian D
  7. LOL, the plot thickens then. We now know that the record was demoed with custom promo labels like yours and also made it to a straight issue. So, since we now know of possibly 2 proper demos and 1 straight issue, then where did all the rest go? Ian D
  8. Bang on. It's one of the greatest Northern Soul productions ever - the arrangement is incredible - one of the best I've ever heard. I don't even mind his vocals to be honest. If this had been the Invitations it'd be right up there with the other greats. Ian D

  11. Nah Gordon. They'll just realise that old people have their ways. They'll forgive us 'cos of all the incredible music we dug up. If they don't like it, then good luck to 'em. You have to initially take a lot of shit on this scene, so no one, even in 2013, gets the velvet carpet treatment. If they can't absorb that, then they're not robust enough. Ian D
  12. Me too. They're really receptive to new tunes without carrying any historical or political baggage. I love playing in Europe 'cos you get the chance to play those tunes which you simply couldn't risk in the UK. It's a bit like working with a completely fresh palette. If I had a collection like yours I'd be playing Europe every month! Can you imagine how many new tracks you could break? Ian D
  13. Bang on Ady. Nothing to add. Great post! Ian D
  14. Yeah, but you're probably the No.1 believer in the world Mark. I love your enthusiam and thirst for accuracy in history. If we could clone you and multiply x 1000 then there's nothing to worry about mate. In answer to the question that's propelled the thread, yes, of course there is an incredible legacy. Whenever I've been asked to describe it over the years, I've described it as the '8th Wonder Of The World', which, as a 15 year old kid in Mirfield, Yorkshire in 1970, it absolutely was, no question. The greatest scene in the world at the time without a shadow of a doubt. And I totally know what I'm talking about. I'm very big on documenting culture properly so it's important to me that this scene gets preserved properly in order that people understand the significance and impact that this scene is responsible for. I totally concurr with Ady's response earlier in the thread. 100% right. It's heartening to know that the same people who were meeting each other for the first time @ Cheapo Cheapo in Berwick St in the early 70's are still passionate about the scene some 40+ years later in 2013. F*ckin' KILLER scene! Best ever and still is. Of course it needs preserving properly. Ian D
  15. I think Europe ploughes it's own path. For sure the UK scene has influenced the rest of the world but different countries have different scenes which are different and have a different slant on things. Are we getting the word 'different' here? I find European audiences much more tolerant on musical tastes generally. Plus younger and with less baggage. All of which means a more refreshing, invigorating take on things. It's a different attitude entirely which I personally like. In many ways they're the perfect audience! Ian D
  16. Hi All, Just closing off the next lot of Backbeats (which are wicked by the way) and I'm struggling with one master. Can anyone out there supply a WAV file for the track "Signing Off With Love" by Johnnie Taylor from his 1980 album "A New Day"? https://www.discogs.com/Johnnie-Taylor-A-New-Day/release/2425388 We have licensed the track but the only master is in the U.S. and thus not easily available. Name check and free album to anyone who can help! Many thanks, Ian D
  17. LOL, yep. Probably not that level of demand but it does make me wonder how you price an item like this - a record which is arguably rarer than Frank Wilson (he said tongue in cheek)! I always remember going through Levine's box @ the Mecca in '73 and seeing the US copy. You could have knocked me over with a feather when someone told me it was test-pressed on Ember maybe a decade later. But to see that it was a bona-fide issue is mind-blowing. Where did the rest of 'em go? And how come the UK collectors at the time never unearthed any? Further investigation required I reckon. A beautiful record. Wish I had it! Ian D
  18. Oh, whoops LOL! I owe you one Steve. Ian D
  19. I totally agree Pete. I think it's rarer than Billy Harner because I've seen at least 4-5 copies of that over the years (usually in DJ's boxes admittedly) but I've NEVER seen a straight UK copy of Fork In The Road. I'm kinda stunned to finally see one to be honest. I bet if you did a straw poll on S.S. right now, no one else would have one. Could be the rarest UK record ever, apart from the Volumes on Pama of course..... £1000 minimum. You'd be crazy to sell it for less. Ian D
  20. You could well be right. I'm sure I have another UK Ember single with a similar 'A' which was definitely a promo since I got it from a UK radio station. By the way, this is a seriously rare record. That's the first one I think I've ever seen and I've known about it for a long time. Previously maybe only seen a demo once. I'm actually surprised that they got to finished label status on this. You learn something new every day..... Ian D
  21. Not early on Steve. I never heard much in the way of oldies in the main room up to '75. In fact, now I think about it, I vaguely remember Dave Evison doing some oldie slots in the main room but I can't remember from when. What year did Mr M's open? Ian D

  23. OK, I'm up for it Roburt! Sounds like just the thing to get me out of this overcrowded metropolis! Who's playing, is it Top 500 or underplayed rarities and, if it's OVO, how do we stop the bouncy decks? Questions, questions..... Ian D
  24. It's a great idea but I'm not sure if it'd have the same effect in a layby in Scunthorpe in mid Feb....... Ian D
