I've currently got 3 none-payers on Discogs and suffered several times on e-bay earlier this year from a couple of people who I thought would have known better. The e-bay ones were annoying because other people wanted the records at the time. I just don't get it........ Ian D

Which is probably why it stayed in the can...... Ian D

Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles - original 7" releases

Funnily enough my mate has just found a Mark Cappani in his collection. What's the going rate for an original these days? Ian D -
Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles - original 7" releases
Ian Dewhirst replied to Sunnysoul's topic in Look At Your Box
I still love it. It's just such a great song and I prefer the production on the Mark Capanni original to the Jackson Sisters version (which I had multiple copies of in the 70s and couldn't give 'em away lol). For me it's just a great song period. But that Mark Capanni production is something else. And super-rare. I'd love to have one as it would fit nicely with the stuff I'm collecting these days.... Articles: The Al Kent and Ronnie Savoy Story
Ian Dewhirst replied to Rob Moss's topic in Front Page News & Articles
So that is definitely Al Kent singing on "The Way You've Acting Lately" then. Wow. What a voice the guy had. I can't believe he didn't make any other recordings as a vocalist. For me he's right up there with the best. Ian D -

Two pages in and it's become obvious that everyone has their own interpretation of what "Crossover" actually is, so it's kinda murky and obviously hard-to-define clearly and succinctly. I've never understood why people would want to hijack an existing term and confuse things by trying to re-invent the same term as something else entirely. The same thing has happened with 'garage'. 'Garage' records were traditionally lo-fi pop/rock records that were literally recorded in garages, generally in outer L.A. in the mid 1960s. Then some bright spark decided that 'garage' would be the term that described UK urban late 90s dance records. Crazy. 'Crossover' is a traditional US music term to describe records which have half a chance of crossing over to the mainstream Pop chart. The diametric opposite of the UK meaning of the word. Y'know, are there so FEW words in the English language that we can't help repeating the same ones whether they make any sense or not? I've never heard one person be able to describe what 'crossover' actually is. I KNOW what crossover is, but it beats me why an existing term had to be appropriated rather than inventing a new one. Great thread though Ivor! Ian D

Tonite I Have Mostly Been ... Speakin To Lou Ragland
Ian Dewhirst replied to Roburt's topic in All About the SOUL
We're trying to identify a guy I met in L.A. in 1976 George. I thought his name was Al and he told me that he'd been been Lou Ragland's manager for a while - I think the same period when "I Travel Alone" cane out on Amy. He had a room full of records so I think he was a promo guy at one point and/or had a record store. He was in hock to the mob so he wasn't doing too well at the point when I met him. Lovely guy though. Ian D -
Jean Carter 'like one' Decca playability Q?
Ian Dewhirst replied to Tlscapital's topic in Look At Your Box
The quality of the pressing put me off the record full-stop. Over a big system the bottom-end was like hiking through mud. If the system was terrible (as most were back then), then all you'd hear was a sea of muffled distortion. Ian D -
Tonite I Have Mostly Been ... Speakin To Lou Ragland

Could have been. I think he was a promoter at one time. I met him in '76 and I believe he worked with Lou in the late 60s...... Ian D -
Tonite I Have Mostly Been ... Speakin To Lou Ragland
Ian Dewhirst replied to Roburt's topic in All About the SOUL
Hey Roburt, If you get the chance, can you ask Lou about a guy I met in L.A. in '76. I think he may have been called Al Rosen (?). Al claimed that he was Lou Ragland's manager at one time and this made sense 'cos I bought a promo of "I Travel Alone" from him. He couldn't believe that I even knew the record and he had many fond memories of his time with Lou. When I bumped into Al he was down on his luck and owed the mob a lot of money. I went round to his place and he wasn't doing too well but I did believe that he was connected with Lou and he was a lovely guy. I'm sure if you mention it to Lou he'll probably remember him..... Great points Russ. I hate the majority of Ian's productions which are usually rinky-dink pedestrian backing tracks. Every so often a beauty emerges like Barbara Pennington's "24 Hours A Day", James Wells' "Baby I'm Still The Same Man", Sydney Barnes' "Standing On Solid Ground", Gary The Master Blaster's "Cafe Regios" or David Ruffin's "Hurt The One You Love". I mean just listen to this...... The fact is that Ian can do the Pop stuff in his sleep. It doesn't really motivate him. It's much more of a challenge to him to try and replicate an authentic Northern Soul production, then to get a contemporary Pop hit. Strange but true. Ian D

That's a pretty accurate assessment Mal. I'm really not such a great friend to him - I haven't even seen him for at least a couple of years and didn't even manage to get over when he had the stroke last year, for which I feel genuinely bad. Also I'm not the easiest friend for him as I don't mind telling him how it is. I keep telling him that if he keeps acting like an arrogant prick, then that's how he'll be perceived. But naturally he never listens to common sense from the likes of myself. Some primeval force keeps compelling him to continually shoot himself in the foot at almost every opportunity. But that's the nature of the beast. He's always been like that ever since the first time I met him up close and personal when he was being ejected from Andy Handley's car for being a prick at Knutsford Services sometime in the early 70s, just before we rescued him. But he taught me so much, just via his knowledge alone, that I can forgive him. Plus he's always been a very loyal and supportive friend throughout the last 45 years, so DESPITE him being an arrogant prick who shoots himself in the foot at every opportunity and DESPITE the fact that we disagree on most things, I consider him a dear friend. I owe him that as a minimum. Sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth and if that is the price then so be it. He's the single most knowledgeable person about Soul music I've ever met in 61 years. His knowledge and recall is right off the scale. Which is probably why we're still friends. He doesn't make it easy though....... Ian D

I should point out that there were hardly ANY boots of Eddie Daniels back then. The record came into conversation quite a bit but no one I knew had a copy, not even Colin Curtis and he loved it. If there were bootlegs of it, then they certainly didn't filter onto the scene back then. I don't think there could have been any more than a handful. There was a massive amount of bootleg paranoia at the time. I received a George Blackwell 'original' from Soussan but didn't take any enjoyment from it because I thought it was a boot, so it went in a swap deal. But guess what? I never saw any more after that. So these were not titles that were bootlegged in any quantity that's for sure. Ian D
