Is This The Most Expensive U.k Soul Single
Ian Dewhirst replied to Tobytyke's topic in All About the SOUL
Actually I'm in possession of the rarest UK 45 of all-time. Only 5 were test-pressed, 3 were immediately returned to the pressing plant as the release had been cancelled by then due to legal issues, with the other remaining copy being also being retained in a private collection (but not a Northern Soul one). Unfortunately I can't reveal the title since it would cause a legal avalanche as it should never have been pressed in the first place. But it's absolutely the rarest UK pressing of all-time and one I'm keeping anyway. It's the rarest record I've ever owned in 45+ years of collecting and also a monumental record anyway, so I'm happy to be the custodian. Ian D -
LOL, no biters on the above, buts that's fine 'cos these labels are shrouded in mystique anyway. For instance, did anyone know that it was Eddie Holland who set up Invictus, Hot Wax and Gold Forever Music and also instigated all the proceedings with the recordings from '68? Eddie had only been signed to an artist contract with Motown and when that lapsed he was free to split. Brian and Lamont were both signed as writers and producers, so were essentially bound by more constrictive contractual obligations which they had to sit out until they could join him later. Yet Eddie Holland was Berry Gordy's No.1 guy in the 50's. He did all the demos for Jackie Wilson apparently and was the artist on the second Tamla release in 1959:- https://www.discogs.com/artist/589715-Edward-Holland-Jr We're gonna be lucky enough to grill him hopefully. Eddie has kindly consented to undertake some PR for this project. So, does anybody out there have any questions which they fancy posing to Eddie Holland? Following a hugely successful appearance by Holland-Dozier-Holland at the Rock And Roll Museum in Cleveland, the HDH organization have made it clear that they'll welcome questions from the committed experts and enthusiasts in the UK and I don't wanna disappoint 'em..... So any questions which get pitched here, will be collated and sent through to Eddie, so any takers out there? Ian D

Just to close off one of the interesting debates that's come up as a result of this box set, does anyone happen to know which studio "Finders Keepers" - Chairmen Of The Board was recorded at? We now know the reasons for the similarity between Steve Wonder's "Superstition" and "Finders Keepers" which stemmed from Stevie's visits to the Twenty Grand club in Detroit whenever Parliament played there and especially his relationship with Bernie Worrell vis a vis new keyboard technology. This came up in part in a Bootsy Collins/Bernie Worrell interview here (which is great reading if you're into this stuff):- https://openvault.wgbh.org/catalog/a3e592-interview-with-bootsy-collins-and-bernie-worrell-part-2-of-3 No wonder it sounded nothing like any of the other COTB releases! So we know that "Finder Keepers" was essentially a Parliament/Bernie Worrell jam but I'd still like to try and figure out where it was recorded if possible if anyone can help? Cheers, Ian D

But I thought Bob said that it had been licensed legitimately? In which case you'd have to know who you were dealing with and have the correct title and artist on the contract surely? Ian D
-
Out of curiosity, what is the point of that Bob? Why would you go to all the trouble of re-issuing something and then not credit the correct artist? Ian D

Mike has graciously allowed me to post this thread in 'All About The Soul' as many Soul Source members were either involved or contributed to this massive project and this will be the best area to keep people up to date with any developments or questions as we gear up towards a 26/05/14 release. Holland Dozier Holland Productions Inc have been totally supportive of this project from day one and we thank them for their keen interest in the package. Eddie Holland has been kind enough to grant us some interview time and we're hoping to lure Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier back into the limelight for this anniversary. Now can we possibly get them over here I wonder......? Holland-Dozier-Holland: The Complete 45s Collection Invictus * Hot Wax * Music Merchant 2014 marks the 45th Anniversary of the launch of the Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels — the trio of labels that Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland launched following their acrimonious split from Berry Gordy’s Motown Empire. Since the 45rpm record was the fulcrum of the new operation, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the 45th anniversary by pulling together every single 45 release from the discography of Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant, both A and B sides. That’s 96 x Invictus 45s, 44 x Hot Wax 45s and 17 x Music Merchant 45s — 157 singles and 269 original recordings total. All re-mastered to perfection. In addition to the above we also scoured the world for many of the legendary unreleased singles and a number of extremely rare acetates now residing in private collections. We managed to unearth previously unreleased recordings by the Chairmen Of The Board, Eloise Laws, Honey Cone, the Barrino Brothers, the Jones Girls and 100 Proof Aged In Soul, so we’ve popped these in as a bonus. So another 16 tracks there. Oh and did we mention the 3 unreleased Tom Moulton remixes we found on Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and “You’ve Got Me Dangling On A String” and Freda Payne’s “Unhooked Generation”? Or the 3 exclusive Tom Moulton instrumental mixes of the above only available via an enclosed Download card? We recruited Dean Rudland to write the 64 page accompanying booklet and scoured the world for some interesting scans and pieces of memorabilia and we’ve housed everything inside a deluxe user-friendly box designed for quick reference. This is the most comprehensive re-issue project ever undertaken on this important part of Soul music history. The Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels continued Holland-Dozier-Holland’s golden touch with back to back international hits like Freda Payne’s iconic “Band Of Gold” and Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and then went to further huge success with Flaming Ember, Honey Cone, 100 Proof Aged In Soul and Laura Lee among many others. Now, for the first time ever, you can own the whole catalogue in one superb and lavish box set. Tons of the new Deep House tracks lift hook, line and sinker from 70s and 80s tunes. Ralph Tee and I played spot the sample a few months back and there were just loads of 'em. Sometimes it's a challenge remembering 'em 'cos they might sample part of an original verse and turn it into a hook. All this stuff sells digitally and it's like the wild west in the digital world, but not enforced, so people are getting away with murder musically.......... Ian D

Actually I've never really had a lot of time for cover-ups. It was an exercise in frustration for me personally. The records somehow didn't seem real until they were eventually outed whether they were any good or not. I'd usually breath a sigh of relief when some of the great ones were uncovered - The Coasters, Steve Karmen Big Band, the Capreez, Ila Vann etc, etc. I'm one of those people who like to know who singers, musicians, arrangers, producers, publishers and record labels actually are. So that's why I never liked cover-ups. Ian D

Sounds like T. Connection to me. Definite Miami vibe I think...... Ian D

I bought an original "Rosemary What Happened" - Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie white promo for £1.00 in the mid 80's. Thought it looked authentic and it turned out it was. I'm pretty sure I did the same thing with a Velours MGM promo too....... Ian D

I send around 10-15 records a month back to the U.S. I always think it's quite ironic to be sending 'em back to where I found them in the first place. I sometimes wonder why people are buying some of the titles that I would have thought would be relatively easy to pick up over there. It could just be that it's easier then spending time going to any existing record shops or fairs etc...... Ian D

Here is Frankie Knuckle's last mix. It was commissioned especially by Ralph Tee from Expansion Records as a Record Store day exclusive and will be released on 19/04/14. NOT a cash-in, but a genuine Frankie Knuckles top-notch killer mix. So here is Paul Johnson "Better Than This" - Frankie Knuckles Directors Cut Classic Soul Mix. R.I.P Frankie. Rockin' it to the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DZsZGFculI Ian D

Mmm. I didn't realise "Not Me Baby" was on the album too. For some reason I thought the single was an extra..... Ian D

I know a place Where we can we all just be free I know a place Where karma is not a factor you’ll see I’ll take you there, oh, I’ll take you there I know a place Where we can all live in harmony And I know a place There’s no wars to fight everyone lives in peace Come on and follow me I’ll take you there, oh, I’ll take you there I know a place Where we can live like naturally And I know a place Where the children can play and believe in their dreams Come on and follow me I’ll take you there, oh, I’ll take you there © Jamie Principle “I’ll Take You There” — Frankie Knuckles feat Jamie Principle R.I.P. Yep. It's pretty dark in places.... Ian D

It does have angst. Tons of it according people who have seen an early cut..... Ian D

I think anyone who's moaning about a bit of lightweight tea-time fare on BBC1 in 2014 obviously never experienced the humiliation of trying to explain why Wigan's Ovation wasn't indicative of Northern Soul following their Top Of The Pops appearance almost 40 years ago. This was tame in comparison believe me. At least the One Show finished with Lorraine Chandler! Ian D

This thread's taken on a life of it's own hasn't it...... Sheeesh..... Ian D

Not easy. We're going through nightmares working we what we can find. Also we've bumped into some howlers on mastered versions of some original CD releases, so accuracy has not been a hallmark of this label. I'm getting there but it's painful.... Ian D
