  1. Ian, the Lee Dorsey (very big when I started on the UK scene) & the SJQ CD's look really nice and will have to find their way to my house (even though I'm still banned from buying any more recids/ CDs by er'indoors).

If you don't mind me asking; were sales of the gospel CD set large enough to prompt a follow-up release ??

    Hi Roburt,

I recommend 'em all obviously and I'm sure you can sneak 'em past the wife. I just shifted 5K vinyl, 2K cd's and 1K books to my new address, so I know all about wive's complaining LOL....

Sales on the Gospel set have been consistant if unspectacular, so I actually think it's done well for a left-field specialist release but it certainly helped that all the repertoire was from Jewel/Paula/Ronn since those are 'in-house' labels. If we can sell a further 1000 or so over the next year or two, then "Holy Spirit" will have served it's purpose for sure. I keep getting reports that some radio stations in the U.S. are only just discovering it, so there is a consistancy about it.....

  2. Finished copies arrived at lunchtime and it looks absolutely brilliant in the flesh!

The first pressing has now completely pre-sold out, so if you want one of the first 3K off the presses, then order through Amazon or your local record emporium but make it quick!

  3. indeed it was, sorry for the late reply i've been away on a phototrip for the last 2 days

No probs Davie. I can see you're a busy guy. Those pics are amazing by the way - that's some of the most beautiful country on these shores. I may go up there for a nice peaceful driving trip to get away from the madness down here.....

Where was the club out of interest? I ask that 'cos one of the best gigs I did (with Paul Schofield) was in the middle of Scotland (for a guy called Tony Cochrane) sometime in the late 70's where he ferried coachloads of customers from all parts of Scotland in. I actually have an early VHS film of some of the gig with a HUGE crowd doing a line-dance to "Shante" by Mass Production. Has to be seen to be believed.........

  4. Great times for underground UK music with real instruments, Talkin' Loud being one of the best labels.

    Jordi

Yep, for sure. Gilles Peterson went from Acid Jazz to Talkin' Loud. We tried for around 4 Talkin' Loud tracks and got 2. The other two got refused for inexplicable reasons. With projects like this, the main obstacle is always the licensing. We were lucky to get what we did as everything that cleared was on the original wish-list!

  5. This looks fantastic Ian, were all tracks on this actually on Acid Jazz? Never knew that about loads on CD1,

Cheers Jocko. Only about 25% is Acid Jazz and that includes the 2 unreleased Brand New Heavies songs on the exclusive 7" (one of which is a Brand New Heavies instrumental version of Aretha's "Rock Steady").

The Nervous Track was the first ever non vocal track I bought, recommended by that man of great taste Robin Salter who says once I had that I would never look back as in getting full on into house not just through the soul scene, he was right.

It's amazing the appeal of that track! It seems to have crossed a few boundaries since loads of people seem to love it.

Some great memories of hazy Sundays in London town from that tracklist.

    Another must buy.

Yep, Dean did a bang-up job in documenting the scene I believe and does some exemporary sleeve notes (with original pics too). Even looking through the 50 page artwork book is like looking at a slice of UK history. If it comes out like it should, then it'll be proud to grace any shelf I reckon......

When you coming down for that drink....?

  6. Loved a bit of Acid Jazz, not so much the label as the genre :)

Yep, we had to license in a lot of outside repertoire from numerous sources. We figured there's been ample Acid Jazz label comps over the years, so this more to document the overall scene as opposed to just the label only. We didn't lose much and we managed to track down 98% of everything we went for, so we're pretty happy with the track listing.

  7. A big UK touring package that Sonny & the group took part in .....

did he use his UK stage-name after returning to the US ?? ......

That record's like a 'who's who' of Northern Soul.......

Chester and Gary Pipkin and Brice Coefield (misspelt on the labe) wrote the song and Mike Post produced it........

  8. mr d when is vol 3 of tom moulton re groved coming out enjoying the first two ! Atb toad

Philly Re-Grooved Vol 3 was going to come out at the end of October as another single CD but what happened was we suddenly got lucky with some long-lost master tapes. Only problem was that loads of the repertoire belonged to different companies -Buddah, Chelsea/Roxbury, Atlantic, Atco etc, so because the repertoire was so stunning - Melba Moore, The Spinners, The Ebony's, Bettye Swan, Blue Magic etc, etc we had to go through the laborious process of getting permission for Tom to remix and license the tracks etc, etc.

So, in answer to your question, Philly Re-Grooved Volume 3 will be a double CD of some breath-takingly awesome Moulton mixes of some truly incredible records and will be out in mid January 2013. With Tom these projects are labours of love, so once we get going things get a momentum of their own. Plus he had to follow 'Philadelphia International: The Tom Moulton Remixes' (which is rapidly approaching 10K happy buyers) with something special right?

It'll be a great start to the new year!

  9. I spoke to Carl in the early 90's when I wanted to licence "I Choose You" by Paris for a Mastercuts comp. I was stunned that such an incredible producer/arranger/writer was working in real estate at the time. I found it hard to believe. Such is the nature of the cut-throat music biz.

A true gentlemen and I'm blessed to have known him. RIP Carl.

  10. sorry that should say "lu-mar" not "lu-bet". I got confused because there's an LA Lu-bet label that had a couple of releases by the explosions.

Tut tut......just not good enough Bob. We expect olympian-level accuracy every time from your good self...........

  11. the derek martin release was not on a reactivated arctic, it was a totally different unrelated label that existed before the philly arctic. It is the same new york label that the cadillacs are on and is the same label as the executive four on lu-bet. The label was run by Jesse Powell, who I think was a one time member and possibly the manager of the cadillacs.

Yep. It didn't make much sense to me either. I was cross-checking the track-listing info for the box set with the Arctic discography on Soulful Kinda Music (see - I can be kinda sad too) and nothing about the Derek Martin record looked right to me, so Dave probably needs to remove it from the main listing.

I take it that it's a messy early to mid 60's New York dirge then?

  12. Actually I've got the track listing and sleeve notes to this package and it's pretty comprehensive - people are going to love Bill Dahl's sleeve notes! Frank Lipsius is actually a major anglophile and I generally hook up with him and his wife whenever they hit these shores. I think Frank wanted to hold on releasing the info until he's 100% happy for it to go out so as soon as I get the OK I'll post the full track listing. Needless to say, it contains every Arctic and Frantic release except that weird Derek Martin release that was on some kind of reactivated Arctic which doesn't even look like it's from the same stable......

More news when I speak to Frank......

  13. Interesting watch. He was a massive influence on Elliot Rashman (who managed Simply Red throughout the 80's) who is on the clip. Apparently Roger left the Wheel because of the all-pervading influence of Northern Soul and the demand for ever-faster tunes. I can understand that since he had a really wide music appreciation which went way beyond just Soul and I know many people who either knew him personally or interviewed him. Should be a great read!

Incidentaly, this was a news piece in Mojo last month so hopefully they'll get a wide audience for this book. I'll certainly read it!
