Onwards and upwards:- Northern Soul: The Soundtrack Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 31 in Music (See Top 100 in Music) #1 in Music > R&B and Soul > Soul #1 in Music > Pop > Pop R&B #2 in Music > Soundtracks & Musicals > Film Music https://www.amazon.co.uk/Northern-Soul-DVD-Steve-Coogan/dp/B00LSW6XGE/ref=pd_sim_m_h__1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1J4R304G2HQHBVTXBJF7 Northern Soul: The DVD Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 56 in DVD & Blu-ray (See Top 100 in DVD & Blu-ray) #1 in DVD & Blu-ray > Music DVDs #9 in DVD & Blu-ray > Drama https://www.amazon.co.uk/Northern-Soul-DVD-Steve-Coogan/dp/B00LSW6XGE/ref=pd_sim_m_h__1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1J4R304G2HQHBVTXBJF7 Just to put it in context, 'specialist' albums and films generally go down the charts between Thursday to Sunday as TV advertised albums and supermarket sales increase massively over those 4 days and push everything else down the chart. Neither the soundtrack or the film is available, yet their both holding comfortably in the rankings and holding 3 No.1 spots between 'em with 5 weeks to go before the film even opens. Not bad for a little English film ay? Ian D

Well I definitely admire your candour. In a perfect world, my Northern Soul film would be much more complicated, have impenetrable plot lines and use gimmicky camera techniques. But it would never get made 'cos it's a fantasy. The reality of making a film and getting it out there is a daunting task and not many people manage it. Sure, we could all make a better film and a cooler trailer but how many of us do? Right now this is the No.1 music DVD in the UK 5 weeks before it's even available. It's also No.9 in the Film Drama rankings and the 50th best-selling film in the UK right now. So it's striking a chord with the public despite your misgivings about the trailer. It could be that this film is simply just not aimed at you. You're obviously looking for something else. Which is fine, but I certainly wouldn't dream as being as belligerent as yourself about a trailer which is massively appealing to the public as evidenced by the film's rise up the rankings since the trailer was released. So, OK. I understand that you're not enamoured with the film and the trailer but why demean something that is striking a chord with the general market? Do you know better or something? Ian D

Got it in one Len. We can all be critical if we want to. Just getting a film made and getting it distributed properly is a monumental task in itself. 'Northern Soul' has been in gestation for 17 years. For Elaine to even get a credible film about a cult music scene to the mainstream market is a massive feat in itself. I know about this stuff, I read all the right books and I've studied the film business very closely for the last 40 odd years. So when people knock the film before they've even seen it or make disparaging remarks I just take a deep breath and let it pass. Having now worked with Elaine for the last 2 years, I realise how hard she's driven herself and how committed she's always been to this project. I seriously don't think anyone else would have been able to do what she's managed to pull off. So she has my everlasting respect. And this is after her ringing me @ 7.30pm tonight to give me a massive bollocking for something she thought I should have done. I really don't mind because very few people have that level of passion and commitment. So unless Martin Scorcese or Francis Ford Coppola get a £200 million pound budget to do a Northern Soul film, it will not get any better than this believe me. It's a remarkable achievement. If anyone belittles the film, then I'll wait with anticipation to see what the belittlers come up with. Ian D

Hi Phil, Apologies mate, I'm somewhat swamped at the moment. I'll have to bump it over to Elaine's office and then she has to then clear it with Universal, so it's not a quick process but I'll send the request over today OK? Good thinking though! Ian D

Robert Elms is reviewing Northern Soul: The Soundtrack on BBC Radio London 94.9 today @ 2.30pm:- https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p001d7kb Ian D

That's the spirit! By next week I expect at least 100 local cinemas to be bombarded with requests! Ian D
-
Nope, not just you. The DVD is exceptionally keenly priced. I was surprised too..... Ian D

Local agitation definitely works as there's a few other instances besides Cambridge. The editor of the Wigan Post threatened to do a campaign if the film wasn't booked for Wigan is just one example! So if the film's not showing in your local area, then definitely contact the cinema. It's not like we have Hollywood budgets or can spend hundreds of thousands of pounds marketing on TV ads etc, so the 'terrorist marketing' approach is pretty much the best approach. Give 'em a prod or, better still, a cattle prod! Ian D

The FANTASTIC Richard Searling interview is on the bonus DVD which comes with the soundtrack CDs:- In other words, this package:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Northern-Soul-Soundtrack-Various-Artists/dp/B00JYDGFXA/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1410511150&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=norther+soul+the+film Ian D

Me too. Agitate for more screenings. We're closer to this than any film company so we have to let 'em know! Ian D

Definitely try and see it at the cinema! The big screen and sound system really present the film in the best way. If your local cinema isn't showing it, then ask 'em why? This is a small UK film up against big money Hollywood blockbusters, yet we just hit No.1 on the Amazon music DVD chart and will have a Top 20 album in 10 days time. If the local cinemas have any sense they'll be demanding to show it. So give 'em a prod. This is a film about Northern Soul for f*cks sake, so I'd expect local cinemas to be right on the case if they know their local audiences. I think at least 500,000 people in the UK would want to see this on the big screen, but hey, what do I know? Ian D

The film has total integrity don't worry. I may have worded it differently when I was dee-jaying back then, but I can clearly recall saying similar stuff to the above, so it wasn't out of place to me at all. Ever hear Martyn Ellis at the Torch? He'd spiel stuff like that all the time. And yes, I never went for the 'grimy' look ever, but the scenes outside the Casino definitely struck a chord with me. Incredibly accurate in my opinion. That's pretty much as I remembered it. I couldn't believe how accurate it was to be honest. I don't think there's much to argue about in terms of accuracy. I was looking for flaws and didn't really find any. It struck a chord with me for sure. Ian D

Wow. The advance orders for the DVD have propelled it to No.1 on the Amazon Music DVD chart and it's just hit No.20 on the Amazon Film Drama Chart. All this 5 weeks before release. · Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 101 in DVD & Blu-ray (See Top 100 in DVD & Blu-ray) o #1 in DVD & Blu-ray > Music DVDs o #20 in DVD & Blu-ray > Drama This is pretty mind-blowing The level of support out there really is incredible. Very exciting times. Ian D

Couldn't agree more! Ian

Well, since the Guardian's launch of the trailer for the film this morning, things have exploded off the scale for a so-called 'specialist' release. It looks like we're finally getting the kind of mainstream respect that we deserve:- Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 36 in Music (See Top 100 in Music) #1 in Music > Pop > Pop R&B #1 in Music > R&B and Soul > Soul #2 in Music > Soundtracks & Musicals > Film Music Right now, we're in a pretty good place. Doesn't get much better in my experience. The public have finally made the correct choice! Ian D

I think it may be a false alarm. I don't think anyone has a copy. Apparently a lot of these guys put up films before they're available. If any detectives out there see anything that suggests that there may be an illegal download available please PM me and I'll unleash the wrath of the gods upon 'em! Ian

What's the other side of this out of curiosity? She had a great track on Enjoy called "Let Me Fix It For You" too........ Ian D

The Apprentice is one of the most popular shows on UK TV - even the bad ones, so I'll take a bad episode of the Apprentice anyday Mike! Ian D
-
And today's positions are..... Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 86 in Music (See Top 100 in Music) #2 in Music > R&B and Soul > Soul #3 in Music > Soundtracks & Musicals > Film Music #4 in Music > Pop > Pop R&B The momentum continues........ Ian D
-
Wow, they're even pre-selling on e-bay these days! I have to hand it to 'em for sheer enterprise. I notice that both items are carefully worded, which is fair enough:- "NEW PRE ORDER ITEM - DUE FOR RELEASE WEEK COMMENCING 15th SEPTEMBER 2014 - WILL BE DISPATCHED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ON RELEASE AND ON RECEIPT FROM SUPPLIERS Please note that release dates are occasionally subject to alteration" and "This item is a Pre Order released on the 13th of October 2014. Orders will be dispatched on/after this date". I guess it's a good sign........ Ian D
-
Well that's impossible 'cos the vinyl hasn't been delivered yet! It's still in manufacture so someone, somewhere's telling porkies! Ian D

One would hope so. I'm just the soundtrack guy. Hopefully we should get an announcement from Universal shortly.... Ian D
