Monday - Best Day Of The Week
What a magnificent day. Woke up automatically @ 7.00am, saw the sunlight beaming through the windows and felt the warm glow of early sunshine and a clear blue sky. I suddenly felt like this was going to be my day! I felt a rustle beside me and Angelina Jolie popped up from under the sheets and said, "morning baby, fancy another one"? 20 minutes later she got up and made me a bacon sarnie. Then the postie came with the mint V.I.P. copy of Frank Wilson which I'd won on a Mexican auction list for $1. Then the phone rang with J-LO pestering me to come round for a 'morning coffee'. And then, just as I was about to head out of the door I realised I'd won the jackpot on the National Lottery - about £7,000,000 - enough for a few records ay? Hit J-L0's, had a quick coffee and took part in some theraputic physical excercise and then headed for a coffee @ Starbucks in Kensington. Whilst having the coffee, I noticed that the building opposite was being cleared out and a couple of the removal guys came into Starbucks with what looked like some old acetates in their hands. I asked 'em if I could look at 'em, and the guy said, "you can have 'em mate - we were gonna chuck 'em anyway..........." Mmm interesting. "My Room Is 6 x 6" - Tony Turner, "He's Not The Kind Of Guy (You Say No To)" - Sandi Sheldon, "My Heart's In Pieces" - The Silhouettes and "This Beat (Don't Stop)" - Stanley Mitchell. Just then the phone rang. Beyonce again. Can I make an early lunch...........? So not a bad day so far............ Gotta go....... Ian D

Eeee... When I Were A Lass
In the early 70's the initiation process was pretty straightforward. If you were new to the scene, you were a 'div'. You'd then do the compulsory 3-6 months of keeping your mouth shut, going to venues, absorbing knowledge until eventually you'd be elevated to the level of 'proper souly' and then find yourself noticing the next lot of fresh 'divs' onto the scene, who after 6-9 months would eventually be acknowledged by you and so on......... Top of the heap was anyone who went to the Wheel as we tended to respect the older soulboys back then. Ian D

Same Song, Same Artist, Different Version
Jimmy Thomas "The Beautiful Night" Parlophone & 20th Century 2 versions Bill Withers "Harlem" Sussex & Lotus (same song different title and recording on Lotus - "Three Nights & A Morning) Ian D

Game Players - Dooley Silverspoon
Also should point out that the U.S. 12" of the full version of "Am I Losing You" is one of the rarest 12"ers ever! A great Soulful duet and dancefloor killer whenever played in the right circles.......... Ian D

This Is Not A Sales Hype, Would Like Your Opion
It's funny you should mention the French Boogie scene 'cos I recently hooked out about 150 U.S. 45's which I think would be of interest to those guys (lots of promos, lots of weedy synths etc, etc). So I went to the site to see what records they want but there's no 80's Boogie section LOL..... I still wanna clear 'em though if you have any regular buyers of this stuff let me know, then I can get 'em off the shelves! Ian D

Also , lest I forget, there are some dynamite scenes and some soulful gems in Quentin Tarrantino's "Death Proof" - Eddie Floyd and Joe Tex from memory. Also a great juke-box scene with an original Dial 45 playing! The "Hold Tight" - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich crash sequence is one of the most effective uses of music I've ever seen! Ian D

"To Live And Die In L.A." is a rockin' film if anyone hasn't seen it! A great storyline, some dynamite roles (Willem Dafoe, Fred Williamson, William Peterson) sexy style and beautifully filmed by Billy Friedkin also features one of the best fights of all time between some Compton badasses and two white scumbags who invaded their crib! Great film! Ian D

Films/documentaries About Soul
Hi Malayka, You'd probably have an appreciative audience for "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" which documents the history of the Funk Brothers. Still worth watching for the archive footage and the interviews with the remaining Funk Brothers. Could do without Ben Harper and Alison Krause mauling some tunes but the over-riding thrust of the film is concentrated on the original musicians so well worth watching if you haven't already......... https://www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com/ Ian D

Northern Soul Tops The Charts
Nope, total crap I'm afraid. I played Gloria Jones's "Tainted Love" when the Q-Tips (remember Paul Young) played a gig at The Warehouse in Leeds where I was the DJ and Marc Almond was the cloakroom boy. He heard it, obviously empathised with the lyrics, rushed upstairs to find out what the record was, got me to make him a cassette of it, recorded it and sold 34,000,000 records and set the world record for the longest running record ever on the Billboard U.S. Pop chart. Strangely enough I didn't give him Judy Street's "What" but I did originally discover the record in L.A. in '76, so a bit of a double whammy I'm afraid! Apologies to all! Ian D

Hi All, Perfect radio weather for the show today, i.e. pissing down LOL! Still that meant we could do the show AND get back and watch the Wimbledon final, so it worked out nicely in the end. Also intermittent mike and earphone probs this week but, HEY, we're professionals and the show must go on! Didn't affect the music luckily so still OK to listen if you don't mind a few cut-outs on our irreverent chatter LOL... Mark 'fluff' Freemans Current Top 30 Oldies
Yeah, it's OK for a Brit cabaret singer I guess! Found a copy for 10p in Notting Hill Record & Tape Exchange before they got wise LOL. And any "Gay Disco" which plays the likes of Maurice Williams, Robbie Lawson, Eula Cooper, the Inspirations, James Fountain and the Carstairs is fine by me! Ian D

Mark 'fluff' Freemans Current Top 30 Oldies
So refreshing to see someone putting their balls on the table! Cheers Fluff! Quite a few oddities that I've never heard in there along with a lot of older goodies which I'd forgotten about - 9th St Exit (fomer 25 pencer), Satyr, Dave Crawford, Sir Wales Wallace, The Duprees, R.B. Hudman Jr and, of course, Lee Mitchell (which I think is pretty damn rare). I'll have to check out a few of 'em though - all new to me and not that obvious ("Mighty Love Man" - Black Stash?). I'd like to see more lists like this - they're interesting to me and make me check out things I wouldn't normally listen to. I'm listening to the Ann Sexton now............. Ian D

Why Do People Run Soul Nights, Nighters Etc
I take exception to the above Bazza. I happen to be a 15yr old cross-dresser with luxuriously bushy hair and a beard who is studying for politics and who is routinely derided by everyone for my supposedly stupid views on making sure that ONLY the right records are being played and making sure my views are ruthlessly enforced. Why the discrimination? Ian D

Dumb Dumb Dumbing It Down
Haha LOL! Just re-read this. Very good! Could we have a 'Doctor Evil" type character as head of the Soul Steering Committee in memory of the legend that was John 'Kojac' Harvey (an idiosyncratic promoter from the early to mid 70's)? Ian D
