I can't see the major record corporations hounding down a Trini Lopez bootleg from Australia either LOL.... Unless I'm mistaken, the Trini Lopez recordings were A&M owned originally ("If I Had A Hammer" was Herb Alpert's first success with hiis new label I seem to remember) and A&M is now owned by Universal, so the world's biggest record company owns Trini Lopez I think (unless it was some tiny hispanic label). Either way, Trini isn't at the top of anyone's priority list these days....... Ian D

All part of the same production crew I reckon. Towanda Barnes was obviously integrated with the Ohio Players but I'm a little shaky on Sam Williams which 'broke' after I'd left the scene for the U.S. It has to be said that when I heard Sam Williams for the first time I loved it! I just wasn't around at that particular point plus I never found a copy. But what a record.......... Ian D

Without seeing the exact law, I would say that there will probably be a clause in there which specifically will not allow commercial re-sale of the repertoire. In other words, these licences probably specifically cover promotional/in-store use only. Furthermore, if the guy is replicating owned copyrights, I would have thought he will still have to approach the repertoire owner for permission. I can't see the guy being allowed to re-produce white label runs of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross or Otis Redding without being zapped by EMI, Universal, Sony-BMG and Warners can you? But you know what? I can stroll into HMV and Zavvi (formally Virgin) and see major label repertoire bootlegs everywhere LOL. I've even been in there with major label people who know about it, but no action is ever taken. I think it's just too legally expensive for major labels to chase fly-by-night bootleggers who they may eventually get, but have little chance of actually getting their costs back. In other words, most bootlegs, especially Northern Soul ones, are effectively 'below the radar' for most labels and simply not worth anyone's efforts in trying to curtail them. As a result, it's almost open season for 'low-run' Northern Soul bootleggers. Unknown artists, unknown labels, a high demand for special limited edition low-run, 500 off pressings of an obscure artist and a willing audience who just want the sound. The bootleggers have been handed everything on a plate LOL. No one is gonna break their arse furiously chasing down the latest bootleg of Clyde McPhatter, Lee Fields or the Del-Larks believe me.......... Ian D

Nope, never heard of it. However, it will only hit legendary status if the necessary ingredients are present. These are:- 1) Lead vocalist must sound obviously 'white' no matter what enthic group he comes from. 2) There must be a white production team with a good pop sensibility behind them. 3) The song title must contain a verifield cliche e.g. "Turning My Heartbeat Up", "Willpower Weak, Temptation Strong", "Happiness In My Heart", "More Today Then Yesterday", "Daylight Saving Time" etc, etc. 4) It really helps if the lead singer has adopted an American-African son who would like to be an aspiring rapper. I always used to go to the 'M' section in an alphabetised record store 'cos I always wanted to find Stanley Mitchell on Dynamo and then I finally found 2 mint promos in an 'M' section so now I swear by it LOL...... But wasn't DJ Toomp adopted into a white family? One of the few examples of cross-ethnic adoption in the early 1970's and part of the University of Atlanta 'Crossreach Adoption' programme? I thought this was well publicised at the time as DJ Toomps adopted father was the lead vocalist of a relatively modest Atlanta white pop act called the MVP's........... Ian D

Your memory's correct Dayo! The Four Seasons was the one which caught fire across the scene and was much more popular than the Velours which came too late for most people. I seem to remember The Velours version cropping up after the Four Seasons. Also I think The Velours was first played in the Birmingham/Wolverhampton area - I think Pep had the first copy didn't he? But the Four Seasons version does it for me everytime - what a magnificent production. Incidentally I actually know Don from the Velours! He eventually moved to the UK and then to Leeds and had success with the Fantastics "Something Old, Something New". I went out with his daughter, Emma Haywood, for a while and the other daughter, Sid, had some success as Haywoode with "Roses". Oh what a tangled path we lead........... Ian D
