  1. Recorded in 1976 at Ike and Tina Turner's Bolic Sound studios in East L.A. Record was promoted and released in early 1977. Ian D
  2. Yes. I still have the original acetate. I was co-producer with Neil Rushton on that track. Soussan originally wanted to do a 'disco-style' Northern Soul medley but I insisted that a Motown medley made more commercial sense for the Disco market. When the record was completed for some reason Soussan called it "Festival Time" by Sam & Kitty (which was on the original acetate) which I thought was ridiculous so we had another row before finally settling on "Uptown Festival" by Shalamar which was obviously borrowed from the Shalimars but made sense because of the perfume which was popular at the time. Worked out nicely for Don Cornelius, Dick Griffey and eventually Howard Hewitt, Jeffery Daniel and Jody Watley - a strange beginning to a career for those guys since none of them were on the original sessions and album. "Uptown Festival" was a U.S. Billboard Dance Chart No.1 for 6 weeks and sold a million before Soultrain was promptly shut-down and Solar was formed. Interesting times...... Ian D
  3. Mmm. Not aware of any problems. I'll check tomorrow... Ian D

  7. Everybody happy then? Don't say I don't look out for you! Ian D
  8. It's kinda similar to "Here Come The Girls" - Ernie K. Doe when they used it on the Boots ad about 10 years ago. I think Soul Jazz did pretty well out of that. How about re-releasing as a 45 for Record Store day? I guarantee it'll be a monster of a RSD release.... Ian D
  9. That's cool. My kinda tempo. I can slouch on a stool jiggling my right leg whilst you do the heavy work OK? It's about time TOTP had a bit of glamour....... Ian D
  10. She was a regular live act at Wakefield Tiffanies I seem to remember. Wakefield Tiffs also had a Northern Room - the Bali Hai, so Cissy was right in the thick of it. She could belt out a tune too. Not my cup of tea but she was a trouper...... Ian D
  11. It's a pop hit Ady. You need to rush-release it as a chart contender! Ian D

  13. That's why I'm interested in how the labels look. Glued on or stamped on? Ian D
  14. Well these are boots period. I'd be interested in how the labels look. What are they like and how have they been done? He must have access to a record plant surely? I can't see how else he could be running presumably minimal amounts of records off. Unless he's doing maybe 50 at a time and just feeding 'em out over a period of years. Either way, it's naughty and just makes everything that little bit murkier ay? What's the betting that a few Eddie Parker's start emerging? Ian D
  15. I'll flag that. I checked this morning and there's plenty of stock.... Ian D
  16. What's the song? Can't quite make it out.... Ian D
  17. Hi All, Just checked with the office and everything appears to be pumping out just fine. Apparently many orders were dispatched on the 9/01/15 and they should all be with you shortly. No stock problems so please continue to order with confidence! Any delivery problems should be sent to:- https://www.myplaydirect.com/demon-music/contact/new Best, Ian D
  18. Unfortunately I'm laid up at home with a chest infection so I can't stomp around the office and bash heads. I'll drop an e-mail to the key guys and see if all is OK. The Philly Box Set in particular has been a huge seller but should still be in stock. Gimme 24 hours and I'll report back.... Ian D
  19. You could do a lot worse than grabbing a copy of this when it's released on 02/03/15! The Odyssey: A Northern Soul Time-Capsule Amazon Link:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Odyssey-Northern-Soul-Time-Capsule/dp/B00JYDGJHM/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1418927279&sr=1-1&keywords=the+odyssey+northern+soul ‘The Odyssey: A Northern Soul Time Capsule’ is the single most comprehensive overview yet of a truly unique UK musical culture which has now lasted over 45 years and had spread across the world. The current popularity of the film “Northern Soul” and it’s soundtrack plus the attendant publicity within the mainstream media - a UK Top 10 film smash, a UK Top 10 album smash and No.1 DVD smash have well and truly put Northern Soul at the forefront of people’s interest again. This is a very, very exciting musical culture which now seems to be appealing to a younger generation of new fans in their teens who love the energy that Northern Soul provides and have the energy to burn off. But how did it start? What made young teenagers in the north of England in the late 1960s and 1970s switch from the mainstream musical scenes and plunge underground into the darkest recesses of black American Soul music? What made them travel hundreds of miles every weekend to see particular DJs and acts? What made them pay 4 weeks of hard-earned wages for a 7” vinyl single from 1967 that hardly anyone had ever heard of? Welcome to Northern Soul. One of the most enigmatic musical cultures ever to exist is now available to explore in depth. Curated by well-known professional compiler, head of Harmess Records and 1970s Northern Soul DJ, Ian Dewhirst, ‘The Odyssey: A Northern Soul Time Capsule’ is very much a labour of love. The contributors to the project read like a who’s who of Northern Soul’s golden era. Ian Dewhirst and Anglo American’s Tim Brown co-compiled the music and deliberated at length over the myriad of licensing issues. Mike Ritson, publisher of Manifesto magazine, kindly allowed us to use large swathes of his definitive book about Northern Soul, ‘The In Crowd’ to document the history of the scene. Karl White kindly provided us with a summing-up of the post Wigan Casino years, Simon White, journalist and broadcaster, interviewed, supervised and directed the collection of numerous interviews with most of the scene’s best-known characters. Richard Searling interviews the world’s longest-standing and most enigmatic record dealer, John Anderson, as well as squeezing in an interview with Philadelphia International’s Kenny Gamble, who looks through Richard’s collection of his own releases from the 1960’s and sees many of these UK releases for the first time ever! Northern Soul history! Not one, but 2 DVDs. The 160 page book layout was designed by Glen Gunton and the overall package design by Jaffa — both long-serving Northern Soul stalwarts. The music follows the evolvement of Northern Soul, from its early beginnings at Manchester’s Twisted Wheel club in 1968, through to The Golden Torch, Blackpool Mecca, Wigan Casino and Cleethorpes Pier in the 1970s, Stafford Top Of The World and The 100 Club in the 1980s and the huge dearth of Soul weekenders and the 100 Club again from the 1990’s to the present day. Featuring a mind-numbing 230 tracks and over 10 hours of legendary music, all licensed from legitimate sources and all of which have been painstakingly re-mastered and documented within the sleeve-notes. The most comprehensive Northern Soul track-listing ever. ‘The Odyssey: A Northern Soul Time-Capsule’ truly does what it says on the tin. 21. I'm tending to ignore the Phil Collins stuff 'cos I don't think it will appeal to soul folk. Likewise "All Cried Out". I did put "Invisible" in though for some reason..... Ian D
  22. Good spot Snakepit. I culled all info from the PRS database and there's several cases where certain titles have been registered to H-D-H with the same title. This is one of 'em. Good spot. 23. Currently residing in New Jersey. My designer Jaffa has an apartment in the same block as Dave, so he sees him pretty regularly. He's still selling records. Ian D
  24. I love the early HDH and Lamont Dozier stuff but I'm looking for the most recognizable songs from the different eras. The marketing stuff will hopefully be aiming at both the purists and the general market for lovers of Soul Music (don't forget I just did the Invictus/Hot Wax/Music Merchant and Rare HDH box sets so I'm pretty up on all the 70s HDH output).... Ian D
  25. Yep. Good call Smudger. Not sure how standout the Garland Green stuff is or whether it's generally that well known, so holding on that for the moment (but you've encouraged me to listen to the stuff again). Zingara Added.
